The leap to 3D was only inevitable for majority of video game franchises, but many fighters struggled to find their feet in the 3rd dimension. Which worked best? A full blown 3D stage fighter, or a 2.5D still focusing on the genre's routes? Well, let's see where the fatally popular MK series went with it. Mortal Kombat 4 - Let's Talk About It!

My favourite moment from Mortal Kombat 4 is when Sub Zero whispers "Arrright" after Scorpion tells him to live well.

Naaaa, the best moment was when Quan Chi says to Shinnok "no u" and goes onto to dominate the realms. Raiden then turns to the camera and says: Have a nice day.

all 3 versions.. ps1: player 1 and player 2 must type the combat codes. p1: 302 p2: 213. exit the match, go to options then to continues, hold l and r. for 20 seconds untill you hear, outstanding. nintendo 64: just go to options, go to continues, then hold block and run for 20 seconds untill, outstanding. pc: go to practice then go to the stage select then this time, hold lowkick and run. (j and space) untill outstanding.

You had to have been there…. Like, actually, Going to the mall, or the movie theatre, and seeing the arcade machine with quan-chi on the side of it, Having your mom tell you she DOES NOT want you playing violent games, And then playing it anyways. The 3D animated gore…. Seeing THAT, in a public place, With graphics that “good” (they were great graphics at the time) It was a good time. I remember my dad getting yelled at by my mom for buying the PS1 port for my older brother and i….. Again, it was a good time

I just about miss out on this era. I have similar experiences - Playing deadly alliance when I was told not to, eagerly awaiting armageddons release so my older brother could buy it for me, seeing the stands and posters all around the GameStops and shopping centres….. seeing ads pop up on the internet claiming you could play the “full deception MK game free online” which was really a virus……. Back when times were much simpler. It’s so different to our modern day advertisements and promotions, the gore isn’t a selling point anymore. Back then, it MEANT something.

@@Gameproducer6 it really did mean something back then. Games are advertised now, Not shown off. The features in games now are all what you can PAY for. MK armageddon essentially didn’t need to show any gameplay when hyping the game to any prospective buyers. It was essentially “You KNOW what mortal kombat is. EVERYONE is fighting this time. EVERY character in the history of the franchise… this is it” Thats all we needed to hear. They didn’t have to sell us a damn thing other than a disc.

Indeed 3d was killing it back in the day Tekken dead or alive make sense to make a mortal kombat 3d wich I thought was really good. Miss the good old days of gaming.

As someone who played it in arcades when it first released, I can say that MK4 is very underrated. It was popular amongst arcade players for a while. Also, in terms of the home ports, the N64 version was great to play with friends. I'm still annoyed NRS didn't include it in the MK Arcade Kollection on PS3/XBox 360 a few years back.

Facts. The game is awesome. So much charm. The cutscenes are hilarious and the fighting system is more fast paced than even MK3

The gameplay is definitely its strong point. Out of the original quadroligy, I would say 4 and UMK3 are the best gameplay wise, and at the end of the day that’s the main point of playing video games, so they win on that front!

MK4 was underrated because it was also rigged, especially when the first two bouts were easy, but got suddenly harder in the third stage and onward.

@@HalifaxHercules You mean like every other Mortal Kombat in arcades? In MK II, the difficulty would spike after the first fight.

:-D it was a brilliant game at the time,Quan Chi's fatality in mk4 is one of the best mk fatalities of all time..playing it retrospectively isn't the same as playing it in context when it first came out..Tekken 1 is pretty hard to look at today but it was mindblowing at the time..midway never mastered weapons kombat,and arguably MK4 is better than the two games that followed because they kept it simple,no shifing stances etc etc,and the characters were more memorable than many of the nonsense characters that appared in the next two games

My favorite Mj because of the fast pace and combos. I really liked it. With better graphics and side stepping this would be the standard.

I liked MK4 more than 1, 2, 3.. But to me the best was Deadly Alliance, Deception and Annihilation.. I lost interest with it around MK vs DC.. And the return to 2D gameplay just didnt interest me at all.. Ive not cared for 9, 10, 11 or now 1.. Or Injustice.. Whats interesting is I was introduced to nearly all the mainstay fighters at the same time.. I played Virtua Fighter 2 or 3 first.. Then MK trilogy and 4.. And then Tekken 3.. Going back then to 1 and 2 after it.. I even played Soul Edge what would become Soul Calibre later.. And Dead or Alive last.. The only fighters ive stuck with are Tekken and Soul Calibre and they are losing me with this focus on supers that take off like half someones health.. Kind of spoiled the whole 'fighting' part for me with that... And all MK is now is that shit.. And juggling someone with hits that they cant fight.. Im not into that.. Ive returned to Virtua Fighter as well.. Having picked up 4 and the like arcade version of it.. That fighter is solid man.. Its a Tekken rival in todays landscape and its not doing the super moves shit.. So im digging it a lot.. They havent made a new game in that series in forever now though.. 4 came out in like 2007 or something.. Still holds up though.

Which version did you play? I play the PS1 and there's no loading when Shinnok switches moveset to another character, the only time there's loading inside a fight is with 2v2 fights to load the next character.

Interesting! I was unaware it didn't lag on the PS1 version! I played the PC version, which even in modern day struggles to load when using Shinnoks shapeshifting move. I'm presuming it doesn't lag on the N64 version then either?

@@Gameproducer6 I recently got the PC version and I see a very brief loading when Shinnok becomes someone else. The "loading" is just to load the "name" of whoever Shinnok morphs into, they solved this in the PS1 by simply not having the narrator say who Shinnok morphed into and play a generic sound effect. This seems like a programming flaw, surely the PC has enough memory to preload these waveforms, but it doesn't for some reason.

I feel like once you get used to it the game is amazing but before then it's just so weird, and the endings are jaw droppingly bad. Also you have to remember in the arcade the graphics were much better, with real shadows and dynamic lighting, where as the home ports couldn't replicate those for some reason.

That's true, the hardware at the time definitely couldn't produce realistic shadows which is fair in retrospect. The endings are so bad they're great though!

Look at the character icons of scorpion and sub-zero… they alone are 100x times better + cooler looking than the character icons of the new Mortal Kombat 1 Game released this year. I remember playing this Game when it came out and thought it was really cool…. Funny I remember just playing the game and not the kid who’s house it was.

There is an infinite combo I found within 10 minutes of playing and it ruined it 😂. So someone with a stun such as scorpion run up as fast as you can do the arm grab repeat it as many times before the max damage thing comes up and on the one that would cause it to do it throw a spear. Even though it knocks you back the spear still stuns them then you can repeat

No this is the first 3d version like you point out. It was the first "DIFFERENT" version !!!!!! See? And that's why MK4 will Always be notorious. In fact why would you want ANY other version, on, for instance, a Playstation 1. .... .. I wouldn't !!!!! ... . IF I Wanted to play MK2 I'd fire up the SNES ROM right hahahahah

Mortal Kombat 4 is awesome but Mortal Kombat Gold is way better on Sega Dreamcast because it has better graphics and extra characters in it. It's basically an Ultimate Mortal Kombat 4.

The digitized MK games were popular, and actually looked better than MK4 did to many people, thats why it flopped at the arcades pretty badly too, 3D didn't start getting good enough looking for MK until the Ps2 games, and even thats debateable. The picking up weapons, and breaking of limbs in between regular punches felt so gimmicky to me.

I agree! Midways first attempt at 3D wasn't exactly spectacular, and the use of weapons did feel a little clunky in MK4 no matter who you were playing as. As we see with Deadly Alliance, as soon as Midway broke away from the same copy and paste movesets for all characters excluding specials, that's when characters really started to stand out for their individual playstyles and uniqueness. It's funny when you play MK4 after any of the PS2 games, because it feels like 2 totally different companies made a go at creating a fighting game with the same franchise. MK4 definitely has its niche, there's still a passionate community out there for it that loves exploring it's limited combo routes and flashy extensions, but it definitely isn't for everyone. I would rather execute Raidens over-the-top style branching combo thank you !

MK4 is the worst transition to 3d that I know of. Mario64 and Warcraft 3 being the best. They should have made another higher definition 2d game- like Street Fighter 3, and only then a 3d game.

Yeah, the 3D aspect if basically forgotten about with MK4. It’s there, but no one cares about it. People still treat it like a 2D fighter, and I can’t blame them.
