I just watched this movie again last night and it wasn't so bad. Some parts are cringe worthy but overall its entertaining, if you're a real MK fan and not really picky. The acting needed more work and fight choreography, but other than that it was alright.. not all crap like everyone says. We have to appreciate all the hard work that went into making it, also to Robin Shou and Talisa Soto for returning and making it what it was.. also the guy who played Shao Kahn did a tremendous job

This movie was not it lol and they could’ve found a better Shao Khan and raider at least taller and bigger guys. Raiden was damn near the same size as Liu

I've read some interesting (and often conflicting) reports about the film. This is what I've gleaned from them: -Evidently it was a nightmare to shoot due to a rushed schedule, and the director (who worked on the first film as the cinematographer) was overwhelmed by the whole experience. Lead actor Robin Shou also wasn't even able to film all of his fight scenes because he was being stretched so thin on-set. (In certain scenes, Liu is actually played by Tony Jaa in wideshots, with Shou just shooting closeups.) -At the tail end of post-production, the producers realized that the film just didn't work. They wanted to delay the release by six months to comprehensively re-edited the movie from the ground up (plus, they didn't have enough time to finish most of the special effects, and the extra six months would have helped them tremendously), but rather than delay the film, the studio vetoed the decision and made them release it as it was. -There were also several major deleted scenes, and even an alternate ending that all got cut for different reasons. The main producer wanted to put some of them back into the film, but they just couldn't due to the strict deadlines set by the studio. Would it have saved the film if they had postponed the release to re-edit the film, fix the effects and put the deleted scenes back in? I don't know. It probably still wouldn't have been a good movie, but it might have at least been more coherent. Still, as bad as it is, I've got a bit of nostalgic love for _Annihilation._ It's silly and ridiculous, but it's fun to watch just for how bat-shit crazy it is.

Actually, it's not such a bad movie. But I was frustrated with the work on the image of Shao-Kann, who they turned into a hysterical jerk who makes the wrong decisions. They should have made him like we saw him in mortal kombat: conquest. They also badly spelled out Johnny Cage's death - he should have died at the end of the movie after the epic battle with the fighter squad at the hands of Motaro. Also, they should have spelled out exactly in the script what-what right did Shao-Kann invade Earth in the first place, rather than making the audience listen to nonsense from the elder gods. All in all, there was a lot to work on.

so true. I'm sure the first one was the same way, which is probably why most of the cast from the first film were replaced with new actors/actresses. Because they didn't want to work hard again to have a movie come out cheesy

You can tell that people are passionate about what they do, that they are trying hard, despite the lack of budget required to make something of better quality. I can see it and, as a fan, I appreciate it. All I see now is actors and film-makers either not caring or openly hating the source material, so no amount of modern (but soulless) CGI impresses me.

That is true, one of the few good things about this cinematic abortion: Her fatality, as super ridiculous as it was noted by Cinema Sins on their video on here recently, and then of course Cyrax's self-destruct fatality, which was sort of cool. Sindel's "demonic wind scream" as well, too.

Honestly think the two lead actors or Robin Shou & Talisa Soto (Liu Kang & Kitana, respectively) tried their hardest. But the films final shooting script, the super fuckin' horrid lead baddie from Cobra playing a _TRULY FUCKIN' AWFUL_ over-acting big time Shao Khan with totally the wrong kind of on screen energy and also the film's budget _HAD_ to be funneled as well too. There is no two ways about it.

They tried to hard to make this movie look good. Thats why it looked so bad. It looked like a power rangers movie lol.
@mr.psychobillybrandon17158 жыл бұрын
Yeah strangely the film had an under-budgeted, like under $8 million shooting looking like it was one of FOX KIDS/Saban's late '90s straight to VHS tape releases. Though strangely enough the budget was over THREE TIMES that of the first film. Adjusted for inflation, the budget of this film was closer to $40 million U.S. dollars in 2016 money! So yeah, I personally believe that New Line Cinema must've funneled the money into another feature & a possible second one as they were shooting & also doing post-production work. There is no other excuse for how "dead-on-arrival" Superman IV: The Quest For Peace style the CGI F/X looked even back then. I saw this legendary cinematic shit-sandwich opening night as a (very disappointed) middle schooler in 7th grade. As well as I know what it looks like in high-definition (super sadly) since it game in a two pack with the first 1995 film on blu ray. Even in high def it doesn't help much. So yeah, the studio most definitely handled this one piss poorly. Alas the actors tried but you cannot made filet mignon like four star restaurant meat with store-bought $4 regular cheap-o ground chunk that is of a whole different meat now lol ;-)
@tiiito19888 жыл бұрын
where did you read that it was under-budgeted?
@mr.psychobillybrandon17158 жыл бұрын
Well as we all know the second film had a nearly three times as bigger budget, and yet looks _MUCH_ cheaper. Roughly straight to VHS styled as we can all see, like a FOX KIDS production around that time of a Power Rangers original first three seasons or a Los Luchadores or the like (ect). And so yeah I've _ALWAYS_ been under the impression that New Line Cinema funneled some of its production budget money into other projects. They simply _HAD_ to. I mean look at the dead on arrival CGI FX used in the film, for starters.
@tiiito19888 жыл бұрын
Mr. Psychobilly [Brandon] I thought the budget for the first movie was about $22 millions and for the second was $30 millions. Even on an interview producer Larry Kasanoff said they had around 30% more money for the sequel.
@mr.psychobillybrandon17158 жыл бұрын
But yeah go back and see what I wrote. I was talking a _vastly_ under-budgeted look for the film. It really has a horrendous look. But yeah as we all know the budget was tripled so it was quite odd in retrospect, ya know?

Larry Kasanoff finally spoke about it: "There were so many things that had been cut from the film and so many things that had been shot in a different way than they were written. Honestly, the final movie that's out there is not the final movie. There was supposed to be an entire second pass of visual effects, post-production, editing. But New Line said 'You know what? It's testing so well, it doesn't fucking matter. It still gonna be a hit. And by the way, it was."
