I remember when Mortal Kombat: Annihilation came out and I wanted to see it SO BAD but my parents took me to the theatrical re-release of The Little Mermaid instead. Probably a good call.

My mom’s exact words about MK1 were “that movie was badass”. She literally said part two sucked. We took her friend to see part two and she was embarrassed.

Does anyone remember the tag line for this film on the poster was "Destroy all expectations" And it did alright. lol I was one of those suckers who saw it in theaters on opening weekend....FML

I loved this movie as a kid - but even back then my biggest gripe was Raidens explanation of the plot: Liu Kang: "I thought our victory in Mortal Kombat closed those portals". Raiden: "What closes can also open, again". Me:... "Wut?"

FWIW: Gregory McKinney, the original actor who played Jax in Mortal Kombat (1995), had health problems during the casting call, who then passed in 1998...so they decided to recased him.

The hilarious part about Shao Kahn in Annihilation is that he went through an inversion of what the games had to do. Shao Kahn's actor in the games was actually one of the shortest dudes on-set, so they had to scale him up. As a result, he looked more stocky and imposing.

I remember having the movie poster on my wall. It said "Destroy all expectations". I don't know if the expectations were supposed to be good or bad, but they were Destroyed.

I saw this in the theater, and I remember distinctly remember that the whole theater was laughing at how bad it was. My friends and I were only 12 and we couldn't take it seriously.

Mind-blowing fact: Mortal Kombat - $18 million budget Mortal Kombat: Annihilation - $30 million budget And somehow MK:A was so much worse in quality. Just astounding.

The CGI is like the ones you get with bowling alley animations.

I saw this steaming pile in the theater (I'm a year or two older than James), and after the Nightwolf "Pretty cool" line, I walked out and got my money back. I caught it on TV a couple years later, and I feel like I could have contributed to this panel.

The best scene in this entire movie is when Raiden and Reptile both throw roundhouses at each other and miss for an entire minute. It's absolutely outstanding.

I remember seeing this in the theater and there was a group of kids that came in from a karate class with their instructor that looked like a character from the game. When the movie was about to start some jackass kids from my school broke in the exit door and came in. The giant karate instructor kicked them out and made them look like idiots. They were seriously about to try to fight this 30 year old karate guy as like 15 year old kids. This was right as the movie started which made the experience amazing! I was so amped up after that I loved the movie. After rewatching about 10 years later I realized how bad it actually was. Still love it and watch about once a year now.

We actually thought the CGI was very cool and passable in the original film. It was mostly only done for Reptile, who was kind of an unusual character anyway and when he finally hopped into the body of a statue we were relieved to find out that he was not going to be just a perpetual lizard man throughout the movie. Also, Scorpion's stuff was brilliant.

For Raiden, they swapped out the Highlander for discount Lance Hendrickson.

The Mortal Kombat Annihilation soundtrack is one of the best compilation of techno rock. I still play it today.

Rental reviews is the greatest thing to happen to Cinemassacre since AVGN.

Mortal Kombat Annihilation to me always seemed like one of those made for sci-fi TV movies. It just seemed so low budget.

I have two fond memories of this movie. -Saw it in theaters and when Sindel said her now-infamous line, somebody behind me laughed really loud right before she said the 2nd part and took my attention, so I never noticed it the 2nd part. So for a really long time, I thought her response to Katana's surprise was just "Too bad you!" and thought I just misheard it and the line was really "Too bad for you!" which is arguably a much better line than what it really was. -When the PS2 came out I rented a huge plasma TV for the party, and it had the logo for this movie burned into the screen. A grim reminder.

As a naive kid who didn't know better, I had the embarrassing past experience of seeing MK: Annihilation in the theaters and owning it on VHS as I was a huge MK fan at the time along with my cousins I grew up with. I loved it. I remember my mom being incredibly nauseous throughout seeing it in the theater, but continued to stay because she knew how much I loved it. It wasn't until years later when I re-watched Annihilation as a teen and adult why she felt the way she did. It's a visual disaster, and it's laughable and remarkable at the same time that a parent would sit through literally two hours of a turd pile for their kid. In retrospect, probably the only "redeeming quantities" of Annihilation are the soundtrack, Musetta Vander (Sindel), and Irina Pantavea (Jade). Neither one of these actresses could act their way out of hostage negotiation, but they were hot playing these characters.

Interesting convo. Correction: her name is "Kitana" not "Katana" (which is a sword), so her not using swords isn't a big deal. I actually like that Kitana uses bladed fans as her signature weapons.

The "Suckeeeeers" sound sounds suspiciously like the sound Super Mecha Death Christ 2000 makes!

Of all the things that piss me off the top one has to be when Raiden turns into Billy Idol. Just W...T....F????

I live in Russia and so in 90s there was not much info on MK. So I played SEGA's MK I and love it and then I saw a tape of MK movie. And my mom bought it for me and I watched it and was excited. But when MK II came out, there was even less info. I was harder to beat, so you couldn't read the endings for every character. Not that I knew English well, when I was 8. So there was no info for me about MK II. I had so many questions: why Kano and Sonya are trapped, who's Shao Kahn and Kintaro. Johnny Cage wasn't in MK 3 game, so was he dead? Who killed him? There were roumors he fought Kahn at the end of 2nd tournament and died. And I was so excited for the 2nd MK movie. I thought it was going to answer all these questions. I was 10 when I saw it, and it just sucked. Resently I rewatched it and it just couldn't sit through it, had to fast forward it to the end just to get through with it.

I love that James holds up a copy of Space Mutiny during the intro. 😄

Remember watching this as a teen at the cinema, best time ever - laughed my ass off the whole way through.

Back in the day I confused the two as well, the Arcade Mail Order was NOT for "Mortal Kombat: The Album" It was for a CD of the Video Game music by Dan Forden called "Mortal Kombat II: Music From The Arcade Game Soundtrack". The Mortal Kombat: The Album CD was just available at Music stores, and that is where the Mortal Kombat! Popular Theme song came from, the group was "The Immortals" And I believe it was sung by Oliver Adams. I also know a lot about this movie as MK is my specialty, the reason why the effects suck so bad (honestly some are decent and some are god awefull ) is they did a test screening and the crowd loved it, so the studio told them to release it straight away, the director wanted to go back and make the effects better was not allowed to.
