Deception was NertherRealm's (Midway) first attempt at telling a truly cinematic story in a Mortal Kombat game. The game was ambitious for a fighting game. It feature almost all the same goodies from the previous installment, Deadly Alliance. But it also had a full fledged story mode that featured an RPG-style campaign. You could take on side quests, collect items, find unlockables and explore an open world full of goodies. This game is not a deep RPG by any means, but for a fighting in game in that time, it was unheard of. This might seem boring to newer fans of the series, but for anyone who played this game back in the day, this might be a nice stroll through memory lane. Enjoy!
As always, we used relevant gameplay, important dialogue and all cutscenes to create one fluid cinematic story. I also included the ending from Shujinko's arcade mode, to round out the story.

TheAxDwarf This video doesn't show any of the optional sidequests in Konquest Mode. It is possible to return the amulet to Bo'Rai Cho before leaving Earthrealm, and he honors you for doing a good deed without promise of reward.

@@darionblack4434 I mean it wouldn't be that difficult right? Just have a main character and use him to explore the realms in their rebooted form. You don't even have to create huge maps. I mean deception's maps weren't that big but had a lot of [k]ontent.

If this game is remaked or remastered in this gen, WB Games is gonna for sure charge us for the extra content. Like $20 for konquest, $20 for chess kombat, and $10 for puzzle kombat. While this game isn’t perfect, it forever remains my favorite mk 3d era game. Being able to roam and see multiple realms alone in my opinion is so cool. I would pay anything for Mortal Kombat to try something like this again.

For those wanting to know all the time jumps in the story. 14:50 - 5 years & 1 month of training with Bo Rai Cho 42:28 - 10 years & 10 months for walking into the time displacement pool where the Chaos Kamidogu lies. 01:01:15 - 10 years & 4 months to cleanse his soul of corruption with the aid of Nightwolf. 01:18:37 - 20 years & 6 months of waiting in a prison cell in Order Realm awaiting his trial for allegedly breaking curfew.

This game was so great. I have huge memories about this game, and it was definitelt the best Mortal Kombat game ever made even today. They totally brought the MK series to a whole new level, especially with the Konquest mode. Even the music from the Konquest mode (especially the music the first village in Earthrealm when you begin) gives me chilling memories... ! They should make another game like this one..

I just realized "Damashi" made Shujinko jealous by mentioning the kid that pretended to be Shang Tsung and gave Shujinko the exact same powers of mimicry as Shang Tsung. It's also interesting how you have a parallel between Liu Kang and Shujinko. Liu is someone who is naturally gifted and honed his skills, while Shujinko whom was not that talented, cheated and foolishly embarked on a quest without ever thinking it through beyond his own powers for several years

Shinjiko was a very interesting character. He was instrumental in reviving Onaga, and he learned alot on his journey. He definitely was worthy of being the Elder gods champion.

@@tonypaella People believe God talks to them because of the dreams they had. Shujinko had a giant glowing ball appear to him claiming to be an elder god. That same ball was there for him his entire life. Who else would he trust? I think most people would probably fall for it. Especially someone who believed they were born for greatness, like Shujinko did.

1:37:11 I like to think that after Deception’s ending, Shujinko’s fight with Onaga crippled and weakened him, but didn’t kill him. So after the battle, he escaped and went into hiding. Hiding until the power of Armageddon revealed itself and drew all warriors to it, including him. But upon arriving, he sees Shao Khan and is far more interested in killing the mortal responsible for sending him on this downward path from the beginning. So he attacks and Carries him away while Shao was off-guard. But while being whisked away, Shao attacks him mid-air(most likely by summoning his hammer to him) and notices Onaga is much weaker than he should be due to not being fully recovered from his fight with Shujinko. He then takes advantage of this and Kills Onaga either while being carried, or after they both fall to the ground. After, he makes his way back to the temple of Blaze and sees most kombatants either killed or unconscious, with only Taven standing in his way. After Killing Taven and defeating Blaze, Shao obtains the power of Armageddon and Raiden with the remaining kombatants try to stop him. Which leads us into the opening of MK9. Like I said, this is just what I think happened off-screen, but it does fill in the gaps between these events in my opinion.

Its typically for what the social climate these days is. But i did like the double johnny thing. Except this storyline kinda fits into the themes that the original mortal kombat is based off of imo. I like shujinko and hope future games will include the new god liu kang assisting shujinko as the champion of mortal kombat or something like that would be interesting.

It’s inevitable. Someone else wouldve taken Onaga/damashi’s offer and same ending. Damashi did say he could redirect to shujinko’s classmate (the one who pretended to be Shang Tsung in the beginning konquest)

Knowing how it will end, early on, so many clues that Damashi was evil. Like telling shujinko to keep the warrior's medalion to trick people. Stealing from the Lin Kuei, making him lie on several ocasions. Towards the end seemed a bit filler content, wel to get him to interact with characters he hadn't already. Earth to compete then not competing, Netherrealm to taint his soul again, Outworld to assault the Deadly Alliance. Also he seemed a bit too... polite to a lot of characters. For example letting Hotaru arrest him without a fight.

its the atmosphere where this game is 11/10. You really do feel you are wondering another world and are seeing the characters come to life. Prior to this game, MK lore was mostly a mess of cutscenes and text from endings, but this game brought it together to make a convincing storyline (even if some parts of the timeline are completely incoherent, it was a valiant effort). the music certainly helped in the atmosphere as well.

I agree with your point about atmosphere. It's the music, noises and sound effects. Also the fact that you're traveling all those realms that all look different. The design of the kamidogu for each realm is also worth mentioning. My favorite mortal Kombat game in total, not just konquest.

Most NA seems to look older in their youth, but look younger in their senior year, all the while Asian looks are mostly the other way around (you can see both in real life) and it's possible that Nightwolf is younger by 5-15 years old, which makes sense with Shujinko.
