years ago I watched a really interesting documentary about a burn victim that instead of using opioids they put the patient under hypnosis. it worked amazingly, and due to some hypnotic suggestions they healed up way better than any of the doctors thought possible.

Your right I take 80mg of Methadone a day, if I broke a bone or needed pain relief they would need to use ketamine as they wouldn't be able to give me a high enough dose of an opioid as 80mg Methadone is equal to about 300 - 500mg of Morphine.

Well they could eventually but not in an emergency situation, I can take 100mg Diamorphine IV and it does not really do anything no A and E dep is going to give you more than 5 to 10mg at once.

I had an accident that gave me pretty severe burns around 5 years ago, and they gave me ketamine. It was one of the worst experiences of my life, worse than being on fire. I can't believe people take this stuff recreationally.

​@@Johnny-tq9noWell, I don't think we should take away pain meds, or make them more difficult to obtain. Ovarian cancer is agonizing, and patients need some sort of pain relief. Hard not to get addicted when you're needing heavy doses of pain meds just to function in life.

I was a counselor at a methadone clinic and so many of my patients were there because they got addicted to opiates after surgeries. I have severe back pain due to 5 herniated discs, DDD, and arthritis, and I've always refused to take opiates. I hate being in constant pain but I'm sure I'd hate becoming an addict even more.

You and I both know that with her tolerance levels plus the fact that she was taking her pain meds as prescribed (since they tell you when to take them in the hospital!) she would almost certainly function BETTER with the pain meds and if anything -- she just would not have the same level of clarity without them -- especially if reduced low enough to give her withdrawal symptoms!!! The sick thing is that I'm sure that the providers 'get it,' but they are so scared shitless of getting sued or facing discipline that they would rather willfully leave the patients in their charge in severe pain! I have a very painful connective tissue disease and needed a second spine surgery a couple years back, and they treated my pain better BEFORE the surgery than after it! They also had some very messed-up protocols, such as needing a "7 or higher" on the pain-scale to get your PRESCRIBED MEDS!!! Being that my pain tolerance is through the roof after having a dozen or so major surgeries in my life, plus countless dislocations, I literally need to be either actively passing a kidney stone or dying for my pain level to be a "7 or higher!" I live in a "perpetual 3" plus or minus a point on most days. I even was told once that my "foot couldn't be broken" because I seemed like I wasn't in "enough pain." I explained that I heard it crack, and felt it crack, and that it hurts, but they treated me like crap until the x-rays came back and were very apologetic thereafter. The system sucks, whenever opioids come-up, legal or otherwise, there's simply a stigma that 95% of the providers can't understand and the 5% who do simply won't admit to it! This story is a great example of how sad things can become when at the most extreme! Be well.

I barely survived a VHF (viral hemorrhagic fever) and I was in so much pain at the time, even the slight change in air movement whenever someone approached my bed felt like lava melting my skin off. Yet there are people who think a bad cut is "level 10" and that's what goes into their chart.

I get where you’re coming from, Nannette. As a mother of a child who spent ten years torturing themselves and all who loved our child by using drugs. No one would’ve predicted that! Not saying things were perfect but our child had a loving and secure childhood. One that also included firm boundaries and appropriate disciplines. I’m old so I don’t think a spanking is an absolute no-go. You employ them very sparingly without any intention of causing pain. So, this kid was the last one anyone would’ve thought such a thing would happen to. Our child has, thank God, been clean and sober for 4+ years. To our immense relief. During those years an alarming number of kids in her class and school and area…died. So, I do hear you. However, opiates have always been and remain the most effective way to treat pain. There’s not much else in development. I’m sure there are plenty of folks out there studying just this but…they’ll not get much funding. The government and Big Pharma don’t want any new medications for pain relief being developed. There is big money in it. From prison to new drugs to help prevent opioid overdose (which was waiting in the wings. Ready to be put in use during this “shocking epidemic “ that wasn’t at all meant to happen) which is expensive. Medicaid pays so you and I pay. To the rehab facilities and safe houses and halfway houses and all the folks working to keep them going. Also…Exorbitantly expensive. And predatory. Some who are suffering with this crippling medical and social disorder may get 30 days for free but, again, we all pay. And yes, indeed, there were doctors flooding the areas with the most vulnerable people living in these very rural, small former coal towns with these new forms of pain killers. Corrupt doctors, yes, and others. Because pain is not something anyone can really quantify. It feels different to all. Then there’s every individual’s tolerance for pain. Again, not a new medication (drug) but a different application or dosage or duration of efficacy. Consequently many good doctors who witness pain experienced by so many people-and realizing that pain, and particularly, chronic pain-is not something people should have to endure if it can be prevented hoped these new meds were going to deliver what the reps, corrupt Dr.’s, and Big Pharma said they would. Of course many caring physicians were hopeful. And I don’t blame them. Who am I to think I would know how everyone SHOULD react to pain? Just make a judgement call? And yes, Dr.’s do have to determine if the pain is real or if the level being described is exaggerated but that’s a tricky call. Good doctors observe more than just the problem presented. They watch the person closely for other cues; not just verbally stated or localized physical ones. How would they categorize that? The same way as in the past? By hairstyle? By age? By ethnicity? Or deny people based on their habits current or former? Or your ancestry? Or what, exactly? That’s cruel. Also, as the not winnable (not winnable by the regular folks point of view; most of whom agree it hasn’t, doesn’t, and will never be won by) “War On Drugs” still isn’t working its magic…well? The government and Big Pharma don’t want it to. They’re the real drug dealers. And they’re making money, money, MONEY. Here’s another thing to think about when a very general statement about a very complex issue is put forth. Something like “When are doctors going to stop prescribing those nasty opioids?” Hopefully not until there’s something more effective and less problematic. I wouldn’t want you to suffer any unbearable (by your perception) or chronic pain ever. Much less to be told you’re lying or you don’t meet the standard or fit a category so will not get any medication or, too little, too late. Despite having the medication(s) available. That because you made errors in judgement or have a habit or behavior or your voice or attitude, etc, etc. don’t fit that individual doctor or doctors idea(s) of what seems-not is-but seems-plausible or fits into just one category you’re unworthy of treatment? When the newly formulated medications such as OxyContin time release tablets and Duragesic Fentanyl patches were introduced to the population Big Pharma reps outright lied and said these medications could NOT be abused and that the risk of dependence was very much lower. Flat out lied. There is proof. Just like they all did with tobacco. Deplorable. And now? People with legitimate pain are punished and not treated because of an opioid epidemic and the resulting addicts that the government and Big Pharma created. Deplorable. Uhhh, in no universe does opioid use or addiction tend to result in being *burned alive* 🤨 I've used them daily for 19 years and had no such issues. Never OD'd, never stolen/pawned anything to finance my use, never doctor-shopped, never been to jail/rehab/homeless or put a needle in my arm despite not having a doctor's prescription. I also make a conscious choice to never drive intoxicated and don't have any kids so my lifestyle affects only me. I know it's anecdotal but if I could go back and do it all again I'd choose to try the hydrocodone again at 20... maybe a bit younger. Drugs aren't inherently good or evil; it's about how they're used... and why. Even big bad opiates. This woman was the victim of a psychopathic killer, period. Like most women in her shoes it was intimate partner violence; a man known to her with whom she shared a bed & a romantic relationship. Don't let that get lost in the anti-drug propaganda.

The guy's mental health issues are not an excuse for his behavior, and society needs to be protected from such people. However, if he receives successful mental health care, he could become a different kind of person, unlikely to commit serious crimes again. In that case, if a careful judicial process determines he is no longer a threat, there is no point in keeping him in jail.

Absolutely. I'm a bit disappointed in his view about Michael keeping her addicted in order to control her. Heroin is pretty cheap and he was prob. dealing it or had easy access to it. He may have taken her to treatment, that doesn't mean he also didn't want to control her somehow, he just figured out enabling her addiction was the easiest way.

I agree with Dr Grande. I think it was an impulsive decision on his part, he was enraged, pouring the gas didn’t calm him enough so he escalated. I do agree with you though that it was a matter of time until something horrific happened, so so sad. If only she had been entered the rehab
