••• ABOUT THIS VIDEO •••
For quite a while now I have been planning this 1 month trip to Svalbard, and now finally the time has come. I spent the first week together with my dad, and we had a wonderful time.
Now I am off to a remote fiord to hopefully find some wildlife to photograph. If I'm not lucky with the wildlife the landscapes are incredible beautiful, and it has been a while since I have done any landscape photography.
In the last episode I got photos of a seal but it only stayed around for less than 3 minutes unfortunately.
I had a beautiful light, so even though I was not too lucky with the wildlife photography I could make some beautiful photos of the magnificent landscapes.
One of the biggest challenges on a location like this is the fact that there are a lot of polar bears in the area and it takes some preparation to stay safe.
Happy watching and stay tuned for Part 4.
••• WHO I AM •••
My name is Morten Hilmer and I am a professional nature and wildlife photographer.
I am a Nikon Ambassador and I work as an ILCP photographer.
Nature conservation is very close to my heart.
I have served in the Danish military special unit, the Sirius Patrol, for two years and that has given me the skills and confidence to operate alone in the arctic regions. I have spent two further years in the northern parts of Greenland meeting the local people and working on photography projects. My driving force is a sense of adventure and my fascination for nature, and my curiosity and empathy for other cultures has led me to many remote regions.
Read more about my time in the Sirius Dogsled Patrol: www.bbc.com/earth/story/201602...
Beside being featured in publications and in my books books my photographs have been awarded in the Wildlife photographer of the year and European Wildlife photographer of the year photo competitions.

Morten, you are on an entirely different level than most landscape and wildlife photographers. Many sleep in tents but not near the North Pole with polar bears around. Seeing that single set of tracks took an alarming turn when you saw the smaller set. I love watching your adventures.

@@johnninofilipino1504 All Mirrorless have issues and limitations. They are not a replacement for the DLSR, just different. i have the Z6, Z6ii, Z7 and Z7ii, but I still end up going to the D850 or D6 for a lot of work. Mirrorless (irrespective of brand) have auto-focus issues of fast moving objects, they also have terrible auto-focus and and Flash sync in studios. (You not see Morten using the Z cameras for fast moving objects). Mirrorless was originally intended for travelers and tourists to have a smaller form factor camera to carry around. They were never intended for pro use as they are fragile with the sensors so close to the front of the camera. It is not about anyone being negative but being realistic and honest but the mirrorless fanboys are a bit blinkered still.

@@snap-n-shoot from what I’ve gathered, the Z9 will be a game-changer in the same way the D3 was for Nikon and as to the price…sub £6k is my guess, which for a pro camera puts it squarely in the picture. Still outside my price range and no doubt dSLRs will still have their place but as they say…Rome wasn’t built in a day!

The key is to do it step by step, start with one night in your local forest, a place you know very well, then maybe stay a bit longer the next time, then move up to a hill, a hill in the winter etc etc Going for adventures is like climbing a staircase, and you are the one building the steps!

@@fbimagesphoto exactly what I wanted to say. When you see solo trips like these ofcourse you will feel intimidated. This is one of the extremes. It's like with all things in life. Repeated and gradual exposure will get you used to it bit by bit. You'll learn, recognize and know how to handle the outdoors after a while.

@@fbimagesphoto Good advise for sure. And if possible, start out with some nights camping in a place where you feel safe already, like your backyard or that of a friend or family. Just getting used to how everything is different when it is dark like the sounds of nature and other normal things in the area. Then move to a local forest or similar, and bring a friend as Morten suggested. It can take time to feel comfortable, but you should always be alert and aware regardless.

Summer 1971, two Dutch authors went into this "alone in the wilderness" thing, Dutch style. There are no dangerous animals here, at all. The site was an islet in the Frisian Sea (Waddenzee in Dutch) that stays barely dry at normal high tide however it would flood with higher spring tides. One tent, one man, one radio connection. One author was this rough and tough nut, wrapped in philosophical, artsy, conservationism and creative refinement. The other guy was the very smart and very witty upper class gentleman who could easily do an elevated form of stand-up. One of them went sort of mad, already by the second day and he had to be "rescued" a bit later. That constant cackling of the birds, all night too, the noise of wind and waves and the solitude, had all grown on him quickly. A couple - almost - sleepless nights and you are worn out very fast, to the point you become depressed or manic or more. Personality structure plays an important role in the decision to do these things, not necessarily where you came from, how. Now move from these authors' 53 degrees latitude North to about 80 or more, to a barren landscape with minimal survival provided by nature and add polar bears. As to polar bears (900 to 1,500lbs for males, 2,209 heaviest recorded), we could call them blonde grizzlies, but have to add that they are bigger, heavier and much more aggressive. Grizzlies average 400-790lbs with 1,700+ heaviest. Between them, the grizzly has more social (i.e. fighting) experience and may win a conflict with a polar (that knows how to save energy), but to humans the polar bear is much more dangerous. It seems to me that Mr. Hilmer has retired from a military career in special forces where he must have been selected for an ability to operate as a lone wolf who can be trusted with a mission and who completes it through proper preparation and excellent execution. That's a compliment but also a warning. He might explain what he does/did and it makes it all seem doable, but that ignores the seal of approval he already had.
@merkin22

I sleep with one eye open when I do wilderness tenting in Grizzly bear country, and they don't hunt humans purposefully like Polar bears will happily do! I don't sleep with a rifle next to me, however; just bear spray and a horn :) Beautiful, beautiful world there. Remarkable that even at that latitude the driftwood speaks of man's spread on the globe with milled lumber on shore! Wonderful video as usual. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice story. Presuming that's a Z9 at the end! Gonna be an interesting week. I have a friend who was stalked by a polar bear on a trip to Baffin Island. They were amongst the crevasses on a glacier with the bear somewhere behind them, hoping it didn't greet them around the next serac. Exhausted, they finally found a flat spot for the tent and collapsed inside. The next morning, after a fitful sleep, the bear was nowhere in sight.

That is a good story from real life and I can imagine how it must have been. So good it was a good ending.

I saw the video but never noticed the Z9 at the end. Had so see the Nikon rumors article and come back to look for it. I should have known lol you are an excellent wildlife photographer and one of the few that actually understands how a camera works and does justice to the amazing Z systems. It was because of your confidence with the Z6II that I went for the Z6II too.

I visited Svalbard a few years ago. Living in the wilderness of Svalbard is tough, but the high arctic scenery is unique.
