THE MORTSAFE:
The mortsafe was invented in the early 1800's. These were iron or iron-and-stone devices of great weight. Often they were complex heavy iron contraptions of rods and plates, padlocked together. They were usually close to many of the Scottish medical schools. A plate was placed over the coffin and rods with heads were pushed through holes in it. These rods were kept in place by locking a second plate over the first to form extremely heavy protection. They were placed over the coffins for about six weeks, then removed for further use when the body inside was sufficiently decayed.

My Great Grandparents, Grandparents, and my father are buried in Shattuck's Grove Cemetery. In the video, you can see all of my family's stones. As a young girl, I visited Shattuck's Grove Cemetery often. My family's stone is the obelisk with the "B" at the top, across from the baby's mort-safe. On the stone inside the mort safe was inscribed "Our Littlest Treasure". My sister and I used to read it each time we visited. Sadly the inscription has worn away. Shattuck's grove truly is a beautiful place.

Henry Ford and his wife are buried with a mort-safe over top of them. They are buried at the Ford Cemetery in Dearborn, Mi. Thank you for you hard work !

I don't know if your interested because my 3x great uncle's grave has been lost to time but there is a statue commerating him and the others that died with him in New Ulm, MN. It was Pres. Lincoln's other war that's been forgotten. It lasted for about 20 years, had a famous battle: The Battle of Little Big Horn or Custer's Last Stand, had the largest mass execution in US history bout 36 Dakota men hanged at Fort Snelling. It's called The Indian Upraising of 1862. My Uncle was killed in the Battle of Leavenworth.

There are a lot of mortsafes in Scotland, home of Burke and Hare. Sometimes family members would take turns guarding a grave until the body would have decomposed enough that it would have been useless to the resurrection men. I have never seen a mortsafe in western Canada but there might be some down east where older cemeteries can be found.

Thanks to Jack for the information and to Ron for following up. That cage was beautifully crafted. Would love to find a old picture of some of these when they were new. I have seen some bars and grate type covers in some old cemeteries in the past, but nothing this elaborate. I guess I assumed it was a protection against wild animals digging so this was enlightening. Grave robbing had to be a big business back then! Thanks again for sharing this with us.🙂

Canada We have had no spring at all in the winter here we do not get snow but a lot of rain and winds off the Pacific Ocean ..where I live is in the straits so we get a lot of strong winds. Well we had the same this spring. Then I call June summer and it’s starting out the same way.. we have had a few nice days and then back to a week of grey skies no sun winds and rain. So I need to see the sun haaaaaaaaa but can’t come into USA at all (our health department just said today ) we can actually travel around this province but no where else. I am so tired of this pandemic already.

I have heard of the cloudy, rainy patterns though, that sucks :( You gave me hot off the press info re the current travel restrictions there..ugh. The virus cant get outta here soon enough, you got that right! Rons vids are amazing, aren't they? I wasnt even searching for this sort of topic, it popped up one day, i started watching n have been hooked ever since. Theres a few earlier stories i havent seen so im going back n watching them. Have you seen the one where he did the grand tour of that huge mausoleum? It had breathtaking sculptures and stained glass in it...amazing. Hopefully the sun is forecast for you tomorrow there? :)

Mortsafes were common where I come from (Scotland) and when I was a child we always imagined they were 'Pirate graves' -you don't think of body snatching when you're 4 years old :-) I'm so happy to watch your subs go up and up, it's very well deserved. PLEASE let us know when you're going to Aberdeen, I'm only an hour away from there.

I'm surprised that last one was ever legal. Technically it's not self-defense, and in fact there is no self there left to defend, nor even any valuable property, such as would be in a bank vault. Having someone shot or blown to bits for the sake of a corpse doesn't quite seem fair.

I'm wondering if those ornaments that you showed on the side of the cage, were a sort of bell that would ring if somebody tried to bypass the cage, and send them off running. At one time, they could have been loud before erosion took over. Just a thought.....

I was thinking about the bells they put on graves in case the person was accidentally buried alive, but unless there had been a rope at one time that eroded, that would not be what they were.

Graves did have Bell's on them back then, and earlier in the Centries before. But I think it was due to, people being burried alive. A lot of times hundred's of years ago. They would assume someone was dead, because maybe of shallow breathing or something. When they weren't sure if someone was dead, they would put a bell on the grave, so if the person woke up, and they really weren't dead. They could ring the bell, so that they could be dug up! Crazy but it was true! Catalepsy was a illness, that sent people to the morgue, when they were really alive. Because it made doctors think the person was dead, when they were very much alive. Today if you have that, you have to wear a bracelet at all times, so people will know!

Here in the northeast, particularly new England, there are graves covered by "wolfstones" large heavy slabs of stone placed there to prevent wolves from digging up the contents. Many date back to the 1700s, some dating back to the French and Indian War.

When I was chatting with everyone, there was a problem escalating that had absolutely nothing to do with you. Ron helped me address it during the premier. @@conditionallyunconditional5691 ... Yes,you are correct. I believe it to be in any Country, I have even seen threats of people doing it before the act had taken place. One case of such a threat online by a few people actually of breena Teena, the transgender female murdered and raped by the thugs with her two friends Murdered with her out in Nebraska. Teenas mother during interviews had stated that she wanted to remember her daughter for how she herself remembered her, not the lies that she created that she wanted others to believe. Since then numorous people in the transgender community have went out of their way and damaged teenas tombstone being replaced a few times and many continue these threats on KZfaq and social media today which is as we all know illegal with the most serious charges. It is a total shame in my opinion. Everyone has the right to their own sexuality but not a single person has the right to damage a persons tombstone based on the parents wishes or the loved ones who burys them in their final resting place.

Sometime when you are back in the Rockford area, you might be interested in New Milford cemetery. There are graves that date back to the first half of the 19th century. Some stones were damaged by ammunition from nearby Camp Grant during WWI training, I believe.

I have never seen one until I was at Shattuck cemetery, and I believed it was a rather unique find when I discovered the grave. If you are ever near Winnebago cnty, there is the tomb of Magill McCormick that is quite interesting as well. If you ever need any info, I am always very willing to assist as much info for Boone, Winnebago, DeKalb, and Ogle counties. Thanks for sharing, and for the shootout. @@FacesoftheForgotten Yes, that is correct, I have been to McCormick s tomb, McCormick is no longer in the tomb and has been relocated to the cemetery. The location is on Montigue rd, just off of Route 20 in Winnebago cnty. No, the name is fine, it is actually my pseudo name as I took it from my grandfather would say that a fool is a Jackanapes....ha ha. There was case of attempted grave robbing in Wisconsin in the middle 2000's. The grave of Laura Tennessen, neighbors called the police and they were caught

Next time you are in Minnesota you might want to check out a mass grave in the SW part of the state with a huge memorial. During the “Great Sioux Uprising of 1862” several homestead families were almost completely wiped out. The Indian Agent on the reservation was starving the Indians. This caused some younger Indians to rise. The saddest thing is that after it was all over the army rounded up about 100 men from the reservation. These men were still on the reservation because they didn’t kill anyone. President Lincoln signed a death warrant for all of them resulting in the largest mass execution in this countries history.

This is so interesting but sad at the same time. This almost looks as if one could dig this up with some effort, so I agree that maybe something was originally on top? And are the bells shaped like a figure of some sort? Katie is listed in the 1880 census as living with her parents at her grandparents house. Her mother was around 50 when she had Katie! Yikes! Sadly, Katie was an only child. RIP sweet angel. 😢

Thank you for this very interesting episode. I live in Edinburgh, where, as you say, the resurrectionists were very active. Graves with similar cages over them are common in local graveyards. What we call a "mortsafe" looks like a large metal coffin, with steel bands across the lid, which are padlocked shut. In the 19th century, bodies were not treated in any way to preserve them, so, after only a week or so in the safe, they would have deteriorated to the point where the anatomy schools would not be interested in buying them. The bodies would then be buried, and the mortsafe therefore ready for the next occupant. Several cemeteries have towers, where a watchman would keep guard at night. However, this was not a well paid job, and some watchmen may have been amenable to "looking the other way" for a monetary consideration. I would particularly recommend Greyfriars churchyard, in the centre of the City for both fascinating graves, including several variations of the protective cages. There is an excellent example of a true mortsafe in the Museum, a few hundred yards from Greyfriars. You will also be interested in the legend of Greyfriars Bobby, whose statue stands by the entrance to the Churchyard. There is another reusable mortsafe at Colington, in the South Western suburbs. I can also recommend Dean cemetery. I live some 4 miles South of the City centre. When the area was developed for housing in the 1970s, bronze age burials were found. The nearest of these are about 100 yards from my house. By the way, Aberdeen is in Scotland, rather than Ireland.

6:57 Notice these ones have the same style bronze marker in the cement? As the first one you showed Ron? I bet these ones with cement and the head stone right in the cement are others to prevent robbing. More or less sealed the grave in with a huge piece of concrete I see a handful in this video I bet this cemetery had major robbing issues and they did this to a lot of burials

How fascinating! I googled images of a mortsafe and found a similar one that had a concrete lid on it. I'm wondering if those 4 posts held one also.

Yes, I bet you're right. That would explain those pieces of mortar left on top of the posts.

When you get out here to AZ, Ron, there are 2 old cemeteries in Central Arizona. One is Adamsville, close to Florence and the Pinal up toward Superior. Wyatt Earp's wife is buried in the Pinal Cemetery. Thought I would give you a heads-up on these old ones. I will be living outside of Florence and both are pretty close to us. Great video Ron!

Hey Ron! You might have already tried or heard of doing this. Try spraying the hard to read ones with a spray bottle of water, I'm pretty sure it will help the letters to be more clear without harming the headstone. I know you've already got a lot to carry around! Although sometimes sad and tragic, I enjoy your videos and the history 👍

If you ever come out south say to Oklahoma, I've got a couple a of graves and backstories I know from down here. Alot of them are in the town I'm from and one of them was my distant cousin Denise Haraway whos on Netflix's The Innocent Man. There's about 4 different graves at Vamoosa Cemetery that have really interesting backstories of crime and murder.

I live in Australia. My ancestors came out on the first fleet. My great great grandfather made the surround for their grave site. It is pretty spectacular for its day. Along the same lines as you were looking at.

Very interesting video. Although the grave robberies took place in Scotland, Burke and Hare were actually migrants from Ireland and William Hare was apparently from a tiny village a few miles from my home town.

I was born in Edinburgh and now live about 60/70 miles from Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire, I think you will love all our cemeteries, you will see some very old headstones and graves, crypts and Mausoleums, it is a country rich in History and intrigue. Enjoy your visit to my home land x

I ran across a mortsafe in Kingston Ontario Canada many years ago similar to this one. The "ornaments" I saw hanging from the actual mortsafe were bells at one time. This was to alert people watching the grave that it was being disturbed. This was what I was told by the groundskeeper.
