Great video……..I recall almost 60 years back, the smaller (1/6d)Airfix models came in a clear plastic bag with a paper artwork, which unfolded to give a history of the aircraft and fairly detailed instruction. The artwork itself was a thing of beauty…….happy days. Thanks for this.

The Airfix Catalogue was a world to lose oneself in. Right now, I'm trying to recover from an epiphany. Fifty years ago, I was a seven-year old reading the catalogue more times than was perhaps good for me. Since then, I've completely put model kits and interest in aircraft aside, but my fascination for WWII armoured vehicles has increased, partly because my father was a tanker and in his last years tanks were easy to make small talk around. I have several books about WWII tanks etc and can identify most of them immediately from a photo or a video, but there is one tank that I always have to sort out in my brain before I can recognise it. The IS-2 tank has this big, boxy turret and a Christie-like cab for the driver, but I _always_ first think of it as having a low bowl turret and a snowplough front (like... another tank, but soft). I have wondered why many times, but now and until the day my memory goes I need not wonder any more. Once I got to 5:25, I immediately saw the IS-2 twinkle its red stars at me, an image I immediately recognised as ingrained in my brain... and the kit, once I found the description, turned out to be that other tank, an IS-3!!! My life, as they say, is a lie.

It's interesting they classify the hovercrafts as aircraft - I'd have thought they were ships. Be nice to see that big SRN4 back again even though they've been out of service for years now. HMS Fearless also brings back memories - when I visited England in 2006 I saw either Fearless or Intrepid in Portsmouth Harbour getting ready to be scrapped.

That hovercraft (very nice boxart) was a horrible kit. A lot of poor fitting parts and some poor instructions.

Airfix was very much shackled by the "constant scale" self-imposed restriction, which worked OK most (or at least some) of the time, but led to pretty inconsistent and strange choices now and then. Since modern ships "had" to be in 1/600, such a scale would make a paltry SRN4, which would not fit the bill of the spectacular, show-stopping kit they were after. 1/144 was just OK, but that scale was for the "Skyking" range, so they had to put the Hovercraft in the quaint category of an airliner. Scale rigidity also backfired in a few isolated by especially painful (to me) cases: The Handley Page Heracles was certainly a "Skyking" of the Thirties, but she's badly let down by the 1/144 scale, which makes her too small to be impressive. The kit was still very hot and popular when it first appeared in 1965, but I think that 1/72, which would place her into Series 6, would have done her far more justice, and would still sell well. Pretty much the same thing could be said of the Boeing Clipper, though I admit that, being larger than a B-29, she would be a Series 7 or even Series 8 aircraft kit and, while undoubtedly gorgeous, there would probably not be a market for her that was large enough to recover the huge tooling costs. Be it as it may, I find the Clipper too .... well, clipped in 1/144!

Enjoying! Something that just struck me is how much this depends on box art for the planes, and yes - who were those people we saw holding those planes?

I agree!! But even then boxart use to be a picture of the completed model.. who knows what works best really, at the end of the day its all eye candy to the modeller lol

The railway items featured in this catalogue are nothing like Hornby's electric trains because they're all plastic construction kits. What's more, as the Dapol company acquired the molds/tools they've all remained in production. Airfix didn't start 'dabbling' in electric trains until the late 1970's.
