If you want to show off - go visit GUM which deciphered as State Department Store. The prices for goods here are absolutely mind blowing. I wonder if in Soviet times it was the same or such luxury direction of the store came to Russia with the capitalism. Most of people come just to take photos or drink a coffee in this store, so I wonder how many people actually are byuing goods in here. Well from one sale of watches you can end a day with a profit here probably..

Just for comparison, The last time I travelled through London there were still ‘pay to use’ toilets in Waterloo Train Station 🚉 this was about 10/12 years ago when I was travelling home. Not sure if this still exists though. Loved the camera shots of the outside of the department store and also the Red Square. Thank you for sharing this with everyone Sergey, best wishes to you and your family from England

Thanks for your reporting and observations... growing up during the cold war, i came across GUM from an article in National Geographic... despite outrageous prices and the impact of Western materialism, it still carries a legacy...

Sergey, please don't regret not shopping in these expensive luxury shops. We have them here too, at least not in my small town in the country, but I used to shop there occasionally when I worked in one of the big cities. Back then, I liked shopping there too. Nowadays I don't need all that stuff any more. As I get older, other things become more important and I'm at home most of the time anyway, unlike when I was younger. So don't worry. ...

Hi Sergey. Thank you for tour of the inside of Gum Dept store. I was in Red Square in Sept 2018 and July 2019, and I did not go into Gum Dept Store. It was huge and went on forever for couple of blocks it seemed. I find that we mostly have a lot of the same stores at home in Canada only cheaper than when travelling somewhere outside the country. Not sure why this is. I think Red Square is tourist area and Gum Dept Store was relying on tourists dollars. If tourists see the prices I think they would prefer to buy at home cheaper for same items. This Dept Store would be more for ppl with higher salaries and yes oligarchs and ppl like that. And it's good for locals to go somewhere window shopping which doesn't cost anything and place to walk around indoors especially in cold winter or rainy weather. Like an outing for something to do. There's free toilets outside Red Square to the right of statue of soldier on a horse. There's a street near this statue. Turn left, cross street and go few steps up the hill. The toilets are under the sidewalk, taking a few steps downward.

No one needs or should even own 68$ underpants. You can get quality and durable underpants for a lot less. One has to be seriously out of touch with reality to buy 68$ underpants. What void in their life are they trying to fill I wonder? Great video once again. Since you are making shopping videos these days, it would be interesting to see what a thrift store/used store looks like in Russia, if you have such stores I would be curious to see how they are.

I am now a poor babushka who previously in my life lived very “high off the hog” as we say. I am educated and have travelled all over the world and shopped/ate in places like this. Now, I can honestly say: when lived with the right spirit, I actually PREFER being a poor babushka. For example: I remember as a younger woman purchasing a $32.00 lipstick. Yesterday I laughed at myself when I bought a $1.49 lipstick at the dollar store and I enjoyed the cheaper one so much more.

@@CrazyRussianSergey That makes sense. People outside of cities have fruit trees. They dry the fruit so they can eat it during winter----and then they mix it with water again to make a fruit drink. But this is the first time I have heard of anybody doing that.

@@MrDEWaters yeah. I did it myself in a dacha. It’s actually very tasty. We usually used not the best apples for example to dry them. So you use all the fruits. Even the ones fallen from the tree 🍎 or with the worm 🐛 inside. So you just revive the worm 🐛 part and then dry it or eat it

We were there during the fall and GUM was a jewel amidst the awful Stalinist / old buildings. Yes, it was mostly empty because Russia can't (and won't) make any consumer item anyone wants, But it was definitely in the grand style - not modern/commercial. As for prices, it' can only get worse. The ruble trades only on the black market where it goes for about half the official rate (180 vs 91). TASS (a regime mouthpiece) reported that 15% of the population spend 90% of their salary on food, 60% spend half and another 15% spend 1/3 for food. The rest spend about 20% on food. (US is 9.5%) We can't imagine that.

11:24 canteens for rich people need an exit sign on the far right to tell them where to exit. poorer people will need to figure out by themselves that the big opening at the front is where you can exit. you need a turnstile and a toll booth just to use the toilet there. 😂 it’s like buying a ticket to the movies but instead you’re going to the restroom. lol

I don't think Karl Lagerfeld is your kind of store. It's the same way in the USA. Stores have radically different prices for what is pretty much the same thing. A shoe might cost 50 dollars at one store, but at Sak's Fifth Avenue it costs five times as much. Probably you noticed this when you visited New York City. I buy things at a Nordstrom outlet store---where they sell things that they have too much of. A shirt costs 150 dollars at Nordstrom but I buy it for 50 dollars or less at the outlet store. Even that would be a high price compared to places like Walmart or Target. I am in St. Louis. Smart people are bargain hunters.

Karl Lagerfeld--I noticed during my last trip to the countries of Eastern Europe--is popular as a kind of design within reach. It has the luster of being associated with Lagerfeld who designed for houses like Chanel. But it's his own cheap label for the Western middle class. It's incredibly low quality.

For example in the restaurant that lady who was severing you she just chucked that plate of food in your face that was a bit rude and for paying to go to the toilet well that is unbelievable we don't do anything like that in the U.K well not in my area at all. when I was in Crete Greece everyone was so friendly and nice to me it's beyond believable how people there can be so cold and unwelcoming.
