For the past four years, ever since my daughter recommended you to me, In have begun my weekly scripture study with you. I’m happy now to be doing Book of Mormon again with these videos that now seem good friends. Thank you

There videos seriously help keep me a float. I was taught opposite of the gospel at home even though we went to church on Sundays. I know what I felt as a little girl when I prayed about The Book of Mormon. I took time to read it before I was baptized at age eight. And before I turned twelve I read it planning that near my twelfth birthday I would pray about it. I did. I didn’t see an angel but I cannot deny what I felt. I am now 40 and I have struggled reading it from start to finish. I have read it, but struggled reading it in order. When I was little I was read versus for people who were really bad and I was told Christ would cast me down because he didn’t want me- church was confusing yet so helpful. So these videos are helping me to get the courage to start the Book of Mormon in order at the Begginings of the year 2021. I am going to read it now and see how far I get but I will follow come follow me for it with the Doctrine and Covenants along with it. These videos have helped me hold on so tight. I just can never thank you enough. I didn’t give up. And of course I have a lot of opposition to it. But I’m going to do it!

Wow. That is wonderful. Thank you for sharing that. I cannot even imagine or cannot comprehend being so mature at your age to read the book of Mormon before you were eight. Never even crossed my mind. Thank you for sharing that. It's inspiring as to what is possible. I wish I had even thought that way when I was a kid.

Thank you so much. One of your insights about service to our fellow beings was a direct answer to something I had been praying about just this morning. God was truly speaking peace to me through what you said. I appreciate it more than you will ever know.

Thanks for the explanation of the two lots of Nephites. Love the pictures too. You explain things so well. I know it is in the Book of Mormon but you help simplify and unmuddle things for me. I love sorry re spelling Sissal singing Slow Down. That helps me open my ears and hear. Just slow down be still and give God the time to talk. Put that on the altar. Receive pure love and inspiration back and act on it promptly.

Do you think every family had a set of scriptures? Do you think every person was taught to read a uniform language even possibly reformed Egyptian?

My family loves these. They are a part of what we do every Sunday in our study and worship routine. Thank you Brothers Fullmer. One thing, among many, that I like is the shading and labeling you do; giving us the topics of groups of verses. I have a running spreadsheet that I share with ward members regularly. The first episode or two didn't do as much, so I have a few holes. Is there a place where you have a complete list?
@brotherfullmer
@brotherfullmer 4 жыл бұрын
We are very gratified and delighted to know that this has been valuable for you and your family! As far as the verse groupings, I have been using the "Maxwell Institute Study Edition of the Book of Mormon," by Grant Hardy for most of it. In a few places I make my own small adjustment in grouping and labels but Professor Hardy's book is a great resource for the structure of the book. I can link to it below. It doesn't have as many notes as I'd like in it but it has some great resources for internal comparisons. I think it's worth picking up. www.amazon.com/Book-Mormon-Another-Testament-Institute-ebook/dp/B07JMWD5VV/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1Z54X8WL4KTG0&dchild=1&keywords=book+of+mormon+maxwell+institute+study+edition&qid=1587218703&sprefix=book+of+mormon+maxwell%2Caps%2C150&sr=8-1

And, by the way, the reason I didn't do it as much in the first episodes was that it takes a lot of time and I thought, "there is no way I'm going to be able to keep this up through all the episodes!" But then I ended up really enjoying it (despite the time) and really liked seeing the results for my own study... so I plan to keep it up.

@@brotherfullmer Well you have a big fan here. I also add my own along the way, too. I have well over 200 rows through Mosiah 3 and am so anxious to continue. I can see it is so much work for you, but I'm sure many are enjoying it even if they don't capture it. As it does for you, my study is enhanced. It's just part of my Sundays. Thanks again and for the pointer to the "Maxwell Institute Study Edition of the Book of Mormon,"

Greatly appreciate these videos. As an FYI I ran a search of the General Conference Corpus, and there is no record of Elder Stapley saying this phrase in Conference. I do find the phrase as far back as the 1940s, so who knows who originated it.
@brotherfullmer

You are our kind of people! Thanks for checking that out. We hate unreferenced sources but the quote was still great.
@jonfullmer4387
@jonfullmer4387 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that vexes me still to date. I don't trust the General Conference Corpus, as its interface is difficult to use and has failed me before, but my research since the show corroborates it in this case. There's little evidence that it was ever said in Conference, and certainly no evidence to suggest that it was Elder Stapley who said it. So far, I've only found the saying quoted twice in previous Church publications. The earliest was the December 1955 Millennial Star. Unfortunately, in both cases, the quote is simply quoted with no reference. If you did find the phrase in the 1940s, where was it?

Ah, nuts! I realized after we recorded that I didn’t name it, so we were going to put it in the visuals, but we forgot! It’s “How Rare a Possession.” It’s still available here: store.churchofjesuschrist.org/usa/en/how-rare-a-possession%3A-the-book-of-mormon-dvd. Still one of my favorite Church videos of all time.

Anything visual is actually Jay’s handiwork. I believe he uses Apple’s Keynote
@brotherfullmer
@brotherfullmer 4 жыл бұрын
Jon's right. I use Apple Keynote (like powerpoint). I import the PDF of the scriptures page by page, first to Photoshop and then to Keynote. This allows me to have just the text and not a white background. Because of that I can add bars of color in Keynote and put them behind the text so it doesn't dim the words. Then I can just add an animation if I want to and that's about it. You may not have been interested in that much information but I'm really glad you like the visual.

I enjoy your insights and appreciate the time spent teaching and sharing the gospel. My only concern is the sometimes speculative ideas presented- in this lesson- Abinadi being the angel who speaks to king Benjamin or Sam being special needs from an earlier lesson. There is so much to teach and without adding unsubstantiated information. Please forgive my froward comment. It is meant with good intention.
@brotherfullmer
@brotherfullmer 4 жыл бұрын
I completely respect that opinion and thank you for bringing it up. When I suggest something more speculative in the show, I firstly strive to make very certain that it is clearly stated as such. We also do not speculate on doctrine. My purpose in what I introduce is to help listeners ask questions. That is one of the most fun ways to engage with the scriptures. Rather than just reading that an angel appeared to King Benjamin, I think there is value in exploring that more. That angel had to be someone. Was it someone we know? I never make positive conclusions on these topics but I think it is valuable to ask the questions - wonder about it and see where that takes you. It's been really helpful for me to engage with the scriptures this way although I can recognize that it may not be for everyone. I hope you've found that we don't do it often. I do think it would be helpful if I talked about why we are asking the questions when we do explore speculation in the story. Thanks again for caring enough to comment about it. We will take your thoughts to heart.

@@brotherfullmer I agree that questions and pondering and making connections is the way to teach and learn. I recommend online video sources for my seminary students, some of whom will be missionaries, hopefully in a few short months. So I think of them when watching helpful study resources, and again might I say I really learn and enjoy your series very much, I just don't ever want an immature learner to then take something they heard in a study video and use it as truth in teaching. In my classroom I can reiterate that we are speculating. Also reminding them that hearing one obscure point of interest even in a conference talk may be the opinion of a man but not doctrine. That they will hear doctrine repeated over and over again. I always try to listen with ears of my children or students. ( or recent converts with little to no gospel understanding) I guess my hope would be a significant point being made that it is opinion or something interesting to think about but not sourced from the scriptures themselves . Thank you for all of your work. Your videos are wonderful. I enjoy listening to them as part of my daily scripture study and teacher prep. ( not being with the students each day to be sure they are not sidelining into the obscure but sticking with doctrine is my angst during this time of separation from them, checking in is not the same as daily morning discussions) thank you for understanding

John and Jay. Thanks for your efforts to teach the Book of Mormon. However, your BYU fantasy map (similar to the fake BYU Virtual Scriptures map, the Daniel H. Ludlow map, and the bogus John L. Sorenson Isthmus of Tehuantepec map) has absolutely nothing to do with the setting of the Book of Mormon in America, the promised Land. You know the church is neutral on Geography. Please stop promoting the Mesoamerican Model! About 1/3 of the artwork in the Come Follow Me Manual for Book of Mormon 2020, promotes the Mesoamerican Model. Why would King Benjamin bother to build a tower next to a giant Mayan pyramid? Makes absolutely no sense. Instead of building a tower, he could just walk up a few stairs on the Mayan Temple and then speak to the people. By the way, cut stone and stairs to the temple are against the Law of Moses (Exodus 20:25-26). 25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. 26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon. Clearly, Mayan temples violate the Law of Moses. If you look at the ancient mound builder sites in America, they had ramps to their temples. Take a close look at some of the amazing drawings in "Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley" by Squire and Davis. The Book of Mormon is true and it happened in America!

I appreciate your passion Bruce but I think your comment should be tempered with the statement that you yourself made - "You know the church is neutral on Geography." That is why we use the Church's internal map from the seminary materials. It is safest to use Church materials while also understanding that they are just intended to be a tool and not a final statement. You seem to be insisting on a final statement - your belief. We will continue to stick with Church materials.
