It's when I see mosins like this that I remind myself I have been really lucky when it comes to Cosmoline. I've never had one that had it caked on so badly. I do have to remind myself though that most of the reason I am able to enjoy my Mosins and SVT and SKS today is because the cosmoline kept it preserved.

Very rarely a KZfaq video is as informative and gets right down to the subject with no clutter. I learned about 10 things I didn't know about my Mosin Nagant from your video. Thankfully, mine was nowhere near as gunked up. Good job sir!

@4:32 - If you look closely there will be a small hole on the left side of the stock opposite each barrel band spring (sometimes it is covered by varnish). You can run a punch through that hole and tap out the band spring from the left side. Less chance of snapping the band spring that way. :-)

Nice! I have a dedicated 4 foot, 4" PVC pipe (cap glued on one end, removable on the other) filled with paint thinner that I soak my barrel assembles in for about 5 to 7 days. This really loosens up the cozmo. I reuse the paint thinner for about 5 to 10 guns before I need to change it. At $7.00 a gallon I run as many guns thru it as I can. Jag the hell out of the barrel. Then I scrub all the small spots. Make sure the bullet chamber is real clean so you don't get bolt sticking when its all back together. Then for $20. I take the wood furniture to a furniture strip shop and he dunks them in his strip tank..pick it up in a few days..takes all the cozmo and all the varnish and stain off. Best $20. you can spend for the amount of time it saves and cost of chemicals. All the rest of the metal I soak in paint thinner over night and clean with a old tooth brush like you did. Refinish the stock, Polish up the bolt and frog lube and your good to go, Just the way it works for me...

Thank You, yours is the Only video I found that shows a More Complete disassembly of a Mosin where you took off the band springs, and the stock reinforcer lug that I hadn't known about just as I was almost done cleaning and sanding the stock, now I can get a deeper, more thorough cleaning. And Damn, I Loved the Bluegrass with the video. Thanks again. And Btw, the open end of the bolt connector/guide rod is what is used to wind out the firing pin for "In the Field" disassembly as is the cruciform fold-out bayonet end as a screwdriver for the top and bottom screws to separate the magazine/bolt etc. so long as the end of it is still flat and not rounded out ; )

I got my mosin after it had been here in the states and “cleaned” for several years. Had the classic sticky bolt after a few shots. Turns out someone hadn’t gotten all the cosmoline out of the chamber. Cleaned it aggressively and now it runs as smooth as possible regardless of if I fire 5 or 500 rounds....

Mine had more cosmoline than whiskers on Lenin's beard and Stalin's moustache combined. Took it apart, tossed the small bits into a plastic container with some paint thinner, took a PVC tube, glued on a cap and tossed in the barrel , cleaning rod and bayonet and topped it up with thinner. Drive out the springs with a small nail. While that was going on, wiped off most of the woodwork with paper towels, got a sink of hot water and added some Murphy's Oil Soap and cleaned up the woodwork. Came out nice, dried it off no more cosmoline. By now the thinner had dissolved the cosmoline on the parts soaking. Wiped the parts off, oiled them up and assembled the rifle. Piece of cake.

That was a greasy bastard. But one thing you should have definitely pointed out is; if you disassemble the firing pin, upon reassembly, the firing pin depth should be checked using that tool. It can be easily overlooked and they could be in for a rude awakening if its set too deep.

***** I had one years ago and sold it. That's when they were going for about $100 lol. I figured I could replace it for the same price but they went up in price a lot since then. I do have a Chinese Type 53 but who ever had it before me butchered the stock. Right after the mag forward is gone so there's no way of attaching the original bayonet. Plus I live the Russian rifles better lol.

So many little bits and pieces, it'll last a long time but I think I'll just pay a gunsmith to clean mine. I want to preserve it as best I can as its a piece of history, but I dont trust myself enough to keep up with all those little pieces and not damage it.
