Thanks to everyone that commented and everyone that continues to comment on this video. I greatly appreciate all the feedback and the discussions generated from the video. Given all the feedback, I’m going to do a more in depth video looking at each rifle. Including a lot of the suggestions submitted by you guys. My hope is to do both of these rifles justice. Thanks again to everybody that commented and subscribed.

While the Mauser style action is clearly superior, the difference in performance between two functional bolt action rifles has virtually no impact on an armed conflict between conscript armies. The only country that adopted a rifle good enough to make a significant difference was the US with the M1 Garand.

My 1946 Russian made Mosin M44, the bolt operates like a hot knife through butter. No issues with the loading clips either.

I own a 98K and I have fired a friend’s Mosin. I like my 98 better overall except for one major advantage of the Mosin that you failed to mention: less felt recoil. The Mosin just wasn’t as punishing on the shoulder to shoot. That has to count for something.

As a Military Surplus collector I own both of these rifles. Main difference to me is the Mauser is easier to load. As to overall functionality and accuracy both of these rifles lag far behind the Swiss Schmidt-Rubin K31, British SMLE, US A03 and Japanese Arisaka Type 99.

You missed one important characteristic: mass-producibility!

The K98 in 7mm Mauser would have been the ulitmate bolt action gun. The heavy 8mm round held it back a bit.

I have the 98k . Sadly it is sporting sport furniture. I had it given to me for my thirteenth birthday. I am 52 . I have sold it to turn around and pay double to get it back . I have carried it a lot of miles hunting. Making memories with a Vet that has long passed away . Infact two of them . May God be looking over them . They where good people. That freedom spreader is a good one . I own a couple bang bangs but go back to that. The price of ammo stops me at times . Lol . The 30/30 is cheeper but that is ok . Great video!

I used to have 3 Mosins also in my collection. I installed the sniper bolt body on each. With its lengthened and turned down bolt handle, the Mosin Nagant is a real pleasure to shoot, and fast too! If you want a particularly good example of the Mosin being loaded from the bottom of the mag, look at the movie "Panfilov's 28". It seems this method was favored by Russian soldiers.

I own both and there's no doubt the Mauser is MUCH better made hands down the fit and metal finishing is so much better than the mosin there's no way to fairly compare the two that being said the mosin is very good utility rifle and works very well for being a little crude in machining and finish the Mauser will be more accurate as well but not by leaps and bounds my choice is the Mauser with no hesitation

I have a german 1937 Mouser 98K... Buying a 1928 Mosin next month. Will do the same test, yet without clips (as I don't have them), but will be loading loose rounds one by one.

My 1953 Polish Mosin carbine has a beautiful action and trigger. It's only downfall is the handle location and clips. Though the clips get easier with practice and technique. Unlike the buttery Mauser clips that need nothing but a firm shove.

Finally! A video with a clear damn winner! So many “all things equal…” or “so who Wins? Well, depending on…” or “the pros and cons are pretty equal..” Love an honest test with a final answer. Thanks bro

Could have put some info out about the triggers

When the Germans were 100 yards or further, the Russians would not be firing so fast that all they would hit is the sky. This is the same for the K98. Both sides would slow down and use well aimed fire. It was proven that the most prolific sniper in ww2 was using the Mosen and to make it even better the rifle he used most often was a standard iron sight mosen. Also, you failed to mention that the 7,62X54 cartridge in a mosen has considerable less felt recoil. I have shot both and the K98 chambered in the 8 mm is brutal to shoot, while the mosen chambered in 7.62x54R is a pleasure. Likewise, I am more accurate with the mosen. I am a very good shot, no brag, just fact. I was trained by the Air Force and the Company while serving in Vietnam. Later after rehab I joined the Sheriffs department and was selected as a sharpshooter on all 3 Sheriffs departments. It would be nice if someone would evaluate both rifles without prejudice.

I think if comparing a Finn M39 is the best comparison as the build quality is better than Russian examples. With that being said, this really is no contest there is a reason why the 98 action is the most copied action on earth for bolt guns. Its fast, smooth and reliable. These guns are capable of great feats of accuracy and in the 98k's case is a smaller and more handy rifle. 98k's strip feed is miles better, 7.92x57 can't rim lock unlike 7.62x54r, and has a better sling mounting system. As mentioned the safety is way better on the 98 and has a cycle but safe position at 12 o clock. Mosins due to their long barrels in good condition are capable of great feats of accuracy. The Mosin with a PU was a much better sniper's weapon than the k98k's ZF due to higher magnification and much shorter eye relief combined with a longer barrel. Mosins tend to operate better in the cold than 98k's. Overall winner is 98k by far. However Mosins did have their advantages, something the Finns made great use of during the Winter War. Mosin was a rifle made cheaply that got the job done, 98K was a high quality rifle that was more suited to hunting than the main rifle of the German army. Out of the WW2 bolt guns i own (I got at least one example of every major country's rifle) Type 99 is probably my favorite and i would argue is the best bolt gun overall with SMLE being close 2nd.

If I could have one here in Brazil, I'm talking about the cost of importing one and the amount of bureaucracy it takes to have a weapon of that caliber for civilian use, I'd choose the Mauser Kar98K for hunt wild boar

So what was the accuracy between the 2? Shouldn't that be an important consideration?

My personal opinion. Apples to apples, the Mauser is clearly a better rifle. It’s faster, lighter, shorter, and more refined. But did this make that much of a difference in the hands of the average Joe who was drafted to fight with these rifles? Who knows, I’d say that comes more down to training. And once we start looking at the big picture for WWII, bolt action guns were obsolescent. Compare a Garand to either of these, or even the German’s own MP-40 and you can see that they are old world technology. Still fun to watch this video and compare the differences, and now I’m offended because I can’t afford a Mauser and you hurt my Mosin’s feelings.

You forgot one key component - Environment - Can't say I recall where I saw it- but remember someone put a loaded Mosin and K-98 in side a cold chamber and tested them at temps of 0F--40. Mauser was stiff at 0, and frozen solid at -40. Mosin just kept chugging along Would you rather have a 8 month Mauser or a 12 month Mosin?

Both rifles are more than good for their intended use. It really comes down to what you think is "nicer" than the other. I'm just glad I never really had to use either and may all those who did rest in peace.

welp, is it true that, as a sniper, the mosin nagant would work better? a nice video, in my opinion, one of the best variants of the mosin if the finnish m39 too, if Im not wrong it had a better sustained fire.

Interesting how you don't note/demonstrate 2 major aspects that are very important to any soldier carrying these rifles. Ease of breakdown and cleaning. Reliability in different weather/ temperature conditions.

I also own a few of each of those rifles ,,,,, ill agree with your results (mostly) ,,,,, however , in my experiences with both rifles , the Yugo M-48 's sights are terrible ! The smallish rear "V" notch (that sits VERY LOW) ,, and small , tapered post front sight post . Leaves a lot to be desired ,,,, meanwhile the Mosin 91/30 has a fairly large and bold square notch rear sight , and an ample square top front post , that provides a MUCH better sight picture. For this reason , My mosin will shoot circles around my M48. I agree that the Mauser is a superior machine ,,, but its more difficult to use it to its full potential.

You're making a lot of assumptions about the use of the safety. Remember, the Soviet philosophy was "is gun, is not safe in first place." Under "ease of use," you also neglected field stripping the weapon and bolt disassembly, both of which are clear wins for the Mosin. And the sights... oof. I've got a lot of Mosins and Mausers, and 100% if the time if I want to be able to hit something, I'm taking a Mosin, because the sights are much better. You also didn't consider manufacturing factors- cost to manufacture a Mosin is significantly lower both in raw materials and money, but also in terms of man-hours. The factory tooling is also simpler, easier to set up, easier to operate, and easier to maintain.

The 98 action is the gold standard of the bolt action. Look at the Springfield 1903, Enfield P14 and M1917, Winchester M54 and pre ‘64 M40 and many more. They are all Mauser knock offs.

The Mauser is easier to load if you push the the cartridges down with the left thumb. To this end the receiver has that cut-out on the left side.

The loading thing is on you, I have one and have the same clips with no issue

the result is no suprise, K98 is better made rifle. But they are military rifles, and as military rifle, and much more than perfection, you need durability. Let's put it straight. On eastern front, were though winters, and K98 had big problems with its small construction tolerances. When temperatures were under freezing point, their K98 actions started to jam, mosin's dont. I am not saying that mosin is better rifle, but it's better military rifle and K98 is better target rifle.

It's not that the bolt is flat. It's why the bolt is flat. The previous mauser was the same way. There is a purpose for this though.

Cheap Chinese stripper clips are a pain in the ass with the mosin. But once you figure out how manipulate it, and the clips break in I have no issues burning through 2-300 rounds in a session

I have both, the Mosin is a simple to use nondestructible rifle, when you have thousands being fired rate of fire is not so essential, the Mauser is faster, and more accurate easier to operate and the Mauser round is better, good to a 1000m mosin maybe 400, but in my experience 200 m, so for what its worth your spot on, but I bought my mosin at 125 for hex receiver so I can provide a rifle to people if I need to and not break the bank

Own them both, both fun to shoot BUT the 98 is far superior. You should have done accuracy test. My M1, 03A3 and K31 blows them both away.

On my Yugoslavian M24/47 with a turned down bolt (clearly a modification, unsure if Bubba or official armory work), I can use the mad minute shooting method. Thumb and index on the bolt knob, middle finger on the trigger.

In my Humble opinion, the 98K Mauser was THE BEST Bolt action rifle of WW2!!!! Not to mention, it is the most Copied Bolt action rifle in the World!!!!!!

Long story short: Mauser is better in every way except finnish mosins have better sights than german mausers.

I have both and I am more accurate with the mosin. also my Russian Stripper clips work very well. Sooo..

And yet the Mosin has made an appearance in every major war since 1891, and on through 2024. Never seen someone have such an issue loading a Mosin. The Russians won the war you are referring to btw. Rifle is fine.

I don't care what people say, I love my mosin and that's that.

In combat the small differences between the two rifles in this video is meaningless. Who won WW2...the Russian fontline soldiers with the Mosin. More soldiers, more supplies, more tanks, more ground support planes and the Mosin win. If the Germans had the semi-auto M-1 Garand they still would have lost.

The only really bad thing about the Mauser is the sight picture. The sights are just atrocious. The round is rather overpowered too. It doesn't have much to do with the topic of the video but I think it's worth mentioning. I don't understand why ze Germans went for this rifle in the first place. Unlike most other countries, they didn't have to deal with a bunch of old crap when they started the re-armament in 1933. They didn't have a large stockpile of old guns and ammo, they basically had nothing. They could've developed a semi-auto rifle just like the Soviets and the Americans did, with a different round, more suitable for it. It was already during WW1 somebody proposed an idea to reduce the infantry rifle caliber to 6mm with a fast, lightweight bullet - does it sound familiar? And yet, ze Germans basically went for the same old crap.

Of course the K98K is superior and well-performed rifle than Mosin, the only reason why they lost because they picked the wrong time for the invasion. If only they chose to invade during winter-to-summer instead of summer-to-winter, the Germans would be able to overrun Moscow easily (the Germans were also capable handling the cold seasons too, but the Russians were already spent their life living in harsh winter more than anyone could done, from Odessa to the extreme and more isolated ones in Siberia. I own both rifles… they both suck… but I’m truly not sure I could have done a better job of intentionally F’ing up the stripper load job on the mosin. The original clips that I own work like butter, though still not as nice as the K98… that being said… both rifles still suck as a combat rifle… in the same era of production- my civilian Winchester mod 1894 sporting rifle in .30-30 out preforms them both out to 400yard and is WAY faster to cycle, if you know your rifle you never have to “stop” to reload and it has a superior capacity… all military rifles of the era “sucked”

Fans of such videos are reminded that the war ended in Berlin. A Russian soldier with Mosin took the Reichstag. A German soldier with a k98 threw out a white flag. Mosin was created for war. k98 was created for the Einsatzgruppen.

If you look at the machine work on that Mosin it was definitely manufactured DURING the war. The machine work is trash. If you want a best quality Russian Mosin it will need to be made BEFORE the war and at the Tula factory. The BEST Mosins were made in Finland and had a custom 2 stage trigger.
