I would highly recommend soaking your mosquito bits in water and using that to water your plants rather than putting it on the top of the soil. I had a fungus gnat problem and placed the mosquito bits on the top of the soil for all my houseplants and ALL of the mosquito bits started to mold. It was a lot of work to get rid of the mold from all my plant's soil!

How much mosquito bits per gallon of water and can I remove them from the water before using the water for plants?

@@jefferythole8988 I've been using about 4 tablespoons per gallon of water and letting it sit for a few hours first. I put my mosquito bits in tea bags so it's easy to take out but I've seen other people use cheesecloth, a stocking, or a metal strainer.

I put my mosquito bits in a distilled water jug and just let them all sink into the bottom so whenever I water my plants I have mosquito bit water without worrying about mold on the top layer soil. You will in addition need yellow sticky trap to catch the adult fungus gnats. Use this and you will see less fungus gnats overall

The bits are inoculated corn kernels and will mold in damp soil, making a “tea” by soaking and removing the bits or straining before pouring into your plants prevents the mold but kills the larvae.

Very good question. As I said previously, about a month ago, it did nothing for me. I tried mixing it in soil as well as watering it, and I also tried sprinkling it on top of the soil as well as watering it. It's been over 3 years! I have changed my soil, I water once a week with nothing but mosquito bit, and it doesn't seem as if I am rid of this problem! Pray tell, what did you do? Did it work?

@@Melisawith1Schannel Hi Melissa. Thank you kindly for your response. I have done the change in watering habits again as well. I keep an eye on the leaf and depth of dryness, and it averages depending on the container size, of course. I am using the sticky sheets, and diatomaceous earth. Now I can say I see a difference!!! Thank you for sharing. It helps me to feel my methods are somewhat validated. 😁 I now feel it is ok to continue this method of attack, and hopefully to an end of these things making the use of my devices at night so unbearable! I hate the way they aim for your face and the reflection in your eyes!

Shouldn't sprinkle on the soil, they'll just turn to mold. You're supposed to soak them and just use the water per the manufacturer.

Kade, Will the Mosquito Bits work if you soak them in water, then water the plants from the bottom? Will it be effective? I'm trying to grow lime trees from seed and I do not want to apply too much water to the plant. I've found that bottom watering is much more effective to get the sprouts to grow. your thoughts?
@PlantBoy
@PlantBoy 3 жыл бұрын
Bottom watering is great, and so is soaking the bits in water and then removing them before watering in order to get the BTI into the soil. My understanding is that fungus gnats lay their eggs towards the top of the soil. If I were you, try using the BTI water to top water just once to saturate the soil, and then go back to bottom watering 😄

I have used this product for 3 years now, and it has done NOTHING to eliminate the problem with fungus gnats. Why 3 years? Because I have been tending to my plants, some for 15+ years. I have decided to move on to diatomaceous earth in the hopes of ridding myself of this horrible dilemma. All because I bought herb seedlings at Home Depot that were sitting outside, so I could grow it indoors.
@Tismesue
@Tismesue 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, 3 years!? It took me only a couple of months to throw everything at my fungus gnat problem (apart from these). I'm sure diatomaceous earth, cinnamon, neem oil and soap and sticky traps have all helped to control the population but are a lot of work. So, after 6 months I have also just bought some bits! Hopefully this will get rid of them. It certainly makes sense to deal with a problem like this with a multi faceted approach. Maybe they would work for you as one part of a system.

I noticed you said you wished you'd known that sprinkling these on the soil, wasn't the best way because the bits mould. (Soaking in water for an hour then using just the water for the plants for people that don't know. 😊) It might be an idea to edit that information into your video, as far as I know you can do this without losing views etc. I could be wrong? People will follow your advice so you could have them avoid the pitfalls of doing it the way you (and instructions) advise. 😊 I'm pretty sure you can also add information into the description.

Has anyone noticed that the mosquito bits are causing rotten or brown spots on plants? I’ve been fighting with gnats for 3-4 months now and I’ve tried everything. I covered my soul like that and everywhere bits were on my spider plant bases, it turned brown
@Tismesue
@Tismesue 2 жыл бұрын
That's because the bits grow fungus then the fungus attacks your plant. I've noticed spider plants are very vulnerable to mold. Soak them in water for an hour or so (1tbs per litre) and just use the water for your plants. I realise this is an old comment but it might help someone else reading it. I suspect you've already discovered the best way to use these. 😊

I filmed this shortly after purchasing the product online, therefore I wasn’t saying, “I have used”, because I had just received the product. I have been using them since buying the product when this video was uploaded and have had great results. Pamela Woolford it’s called bottom watering. Place your nursery pot on your saucer and place water into the saucer. Just don’t let the top soil get moist so keep an eye on it until you get the hang of it. Here’s a video I recommend that explains it and even shows the process. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rcx6iLp2kt3GmWQ.html

This is why I’m so leery of you content creators because it seems like you just putting out content for the money and I guess a contract or something because this was a very researchable thing of letting them soak in water.
