I almost died from Lyme disease in 2018-2019/was hospitalized for 7 months and had a picc line and a port going right into my heart for antibiotics….I barely survived. Lyme is so real and so not rare!! I’m so thankful to have my life today and although I’ll always have symptoms of Lyme and heart damage etc, I escaped with my life. Many don’t. Please be careful and thank you for taking this seriously. Trust me, it’s not something to take lightly!

I always have my "electric tennis racket" in my RV. After I close up for the night, I use it to eliminate all the little pests and are waiting to bite me. Thanks.

You left out one of the systems that works pretty well for me. I have 12 volt or USB powered fans and use them in the evenings under our canopy. I have several and while not perfect, it mostly keeps the mosquitoes, noseeums, yellow and black flies away. It doesn’t help with the chiggers or ticks. For them, I dust my ankles and socks with flowers of sulfer. It’s an old method and you used to find jars of the stuff in every southern pharmacy. Now you have to order in the stuff.

Another trick for inside your RV is to have a fan blowing air in, and just one screened opening for air to get back out. Computer muffin fans work great, they consume little power and are fairly silent. You can zip-tie several together to cover larger openings. The issue is that in the morning you will find a pile of chopped up skeeters under the fan. C'est la guerre.

I make my own moisture and add a few drops of citronella essential oil to it. Also, by eating onions and garlic regularly, and staying away from excessive sugars, I've not been bothered by mosquitoes in decades.

I would like to learn more about making my own solution. A very old lady once showed me how good it was to out real vanilla around your ears to deter knats.

I appreciate all the comments. In remote Alaska on a trip I used the head net; absolutely essential at dusk for all the swarms of mosquitoes.

Bob, I used to hike and found the best choice was concentrated Permethrin. Following the instructions, I soaked everything that might be affected in a 5 gallon bucket. : all my outerwear- shoes, socks, pants, shirts, jackets, etc. I also, using a spray bottle, sprayed my backpack, cap, shoes, and around the base of my tent. Never had a problem.

Love your video. My husband never, ever gets bit by mosquitoes. I have watched a mosquito hover close to his bare arm and then fly to me and bite me. Any mosquito within a mile of me will find me and make a huge, itchy welt. I hate spraying chemicals on my body, so I spray my clothes and try to stay covered. DEET works for me. I can't stand the smell of Skin So Soft, which does not work for me. I never knew that permethrin was safe for humans, so spraying it on clothing is a good idea. But then it is the government saying that it is safe...

Back in the day when I would go hunting I found the Permethrin was the best thing to use. You spray it on your outer layer and make sure you let it dry before wearing. I don’t think I ever got a chigger or tick bite when using it. One time I sat down in a dit in the ground to rest for awhile and then noticed I was in a nest or what looked like a few hundred ticks. I thought for sure I would have 20 or so on me. After getting home and checking I had zero ticks on me.

Regarding head nets. It has been my experience, to avoid the white nets. For me, I could not see as well with the white one as opposed to the black. Black is much easier to see through. Great video! Carry on, till next time!!!

Fabric softeners sheets that you would put in your dryer. Chuck them in the collar of your shirt or around your waist band and they helped immensely.

Winston Churchill when he was a young man wore a bee keepers suit in Uganda to protect himself from mosquitoes and malaria. If at my age DEET kills me, well oh well. I find that being inside during peak mosquito time plus a fan during peak mosquito time works wonders.

Years of canoeing in the boggy north woods of northern Minnesota introduced me to hordes of mosquitoes, to the point that only getting 2 or 3 of them in my cup of coffee was a win! Coping techniques: a) avoidance-skedaddle into your tent/vehicle at dawn and dusk, or when you hear the increasing hum in the bushes. b) protection-wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants as well as nets, etc. Also, avoid blue, which attracts mosquitoes. If ticks are an issue, tuck pant legs into your socks/boots, or tape around your ankles so they can’t crawl inside. c) area repellants-mosquitoes don’t like smoke, so I light incense if the breeze is light enough. d) chemical repellants-I’ve had pretty good luck with the lemon/eucalyptus one recently. My first defense is to put the repellant on my hat, neck handkerchief, and clothing, bearing in mind that many of them will stain fabric (some, especially DEET, melt plastic, varnish and paint and damage man-made fabrics and water-repellant fabrics.) Only as a last resort do I put it on my skin. Wash your hands with soap immediately and areas of application asap, as many (especially DEET) are absorbed through your skin. If you can taste it, it’s been absorbed by your body.

😂, Thank you for another great video. Permethrin is good at repelling bed bugs too. I have treated my travel and backpacking gear with it for years. A head net is easy to make, inexpensive to purchase and can save your sanity... well I have friends that might debate my sanity, but they do work even if they can a warm. Mosquitoes in higher country and the northern areas have a short season, so they are particularly aggressive. I really like my USB rechargeable bug zapper light combo for vehicle camping and living but it is not necessary. Thank you again for another great video. Safe travels.

Hi Bob, I'm on the road 10 months of the year predominantly in the tropical areas across Australia. I mix equal parts of baby oil, Dettol and eucalyptus oil into a spray bottle. Yes it's sticky but it works.

I have used just baby oil when I was in Vietnam with real good luck and been using it ever since.and if you happen to get bit 100% witch hazel is the way to go

I live in the Sierras and have used avon’s Skin so soft lotion as my mosquito repellent forever. It work’s great, completely safe, and no weird smell. I use it on my 4 year old grandson as well. Without it we get eaten alive. Thanks for the informative video Bob.

For mosquitoes in the West and swamps/canals/lake type areas, Etc. There is a sunscreen you can get that has mosquito repellent in it. Take care of two problems with one product. (I made my son a believer when he worked on a riverboat.) For most ticks while in the woods, I rely on a decades old military secret: pantyhose. Yes, guys, pantyhose. :)

I'm surprised you didn't include a pop-up mosquito tent. It's my lifesaver and super easy to pull out, pop up, and cook something on the side of the road, bug free.

This is what I’ve been looking for. Not so much for mosquitoes but when I eat outside every hornet within a square mile (might be a slight exaggeration) finds me. So I don’t really want to cook without a bug net. Thanks!

I bought a rechargeable bug zapper/light. Haven't tried it outside yet but I had a fruit fly buzzing my kitchen that got zapped in less than a minute of it being on. Bought it at Walmart for under $10 in the camping department

I use my DC fan pointed at my chair, the wind helps(they can;t fly against 5 mile an hour winds). I recently got a 2nd one to cover both sides, works great when I’m sitting. Thanks for the info, I think the shirt is good but the color will attract wasps(if its not one thing its another). Mostly I do light weight clothes, and head net. The skeeters are so bad that I like that head nets keep the bugs out of my eyes. I keep my full body suit in my first aid for incidents like portaging on a river at the end of a day when the skeeters can be as thick as Pigpens cloud of dirt, always glad I have it. I ordered a Zaptek, the solar generated bug zapper, but it was ordered so long ago and hasn’t arrived that I think the skeeters flew away with it. Thanks Bob!

Perfect timing! They mentioned on NBC Nightly news yesterday a few reported cases of Malaria down in Texas and one other southern state. It's a good idea at this point to use some type of repellent for now. Thanks, Bob, for another great video☮

I use a hand spray bottle with 1/4" of dish soap at bottom and fill it with water, will kill mosquito swarms quickly outside and get that lone stealth skitter that's in your tent/van/car interrupting your sleep without dealing with any nasty chemicals at all, I hook a spray bottle to my belt so at first sight of a skitters I can quickly eliminate many of them at one time with a wide one shot spray fog, they can't get away...I won, yeah!

They now make mesquito netting that slips over your vehicle door window and you can still roll the window up and doem. Ist time i can leave my windows open and no bugs come in at night. Love it!! Thanks for all the buggy stuff!

I try to avoid deet also but it does work really good. When I was in the army and we went out to the woods they would issue us this insect repellent in a little green bottle that had like 80% deet. If you got some of it on your plastic watch screen, it would actually melt the plastic. That's one of the reasons why I don't use it very often and if I do I put it on the clothes rather than on my skin.

As always, great info, Bob! I have to say, the bug racquet is my favorite. How many times have you swatted at a fly only to miss over and over again? This racket will likely be “one and done” for the fly. You will feel like a fly swatter champ.

I hate bug spray on my clothes and skin, so we use Thermacell. There are different sizes and one you can hang on your backpack or belt loop. They have a range of 15 - 20 feet and you don't need to be cleaning off clothes or skin. I saw something else I want to try... Coffee grounds in a small container, wick in the middle and cloves poked around the top. Light it up and bugs are supposed to hate it. Sounds like the cheapest way to go, can't wait to try it myself!

Thanks Bob for another interesting, and informative video. This one was of particular interest to me, as I get a terrible reaction to mosquito bites. Last camping trip just four bites, arm, leg and under chin sent me to ER. The swelling was huge. We have acquired the bee netting covers, and looking forward to trying the picaridin . Our favorite campgrounds at the beach have lots of flying blood suckers. Hope to out smart them this year. Just a note here others might want to check. We discovered the mosquitos were coming in through the netting on our tent. Our older tent has a very fine mesh, but the newer one has netting they could easily get through. We wound having to cover the tent with plastic wrap the next night.

I completely agree with you about DEET products, but I find that using it on my clothes (and not my skin) works really well to keep mosquitoes away and keep the DEET away from me.

Thermacell is awesome and you're not putting chemicals on your skin. I love it and it's worth every dollar. I have the portable one and use it before I go to bed to make sure there's no mosquitoes in my vehicle. I don't know about the other ones. Skin so soft doesn't work for me at all.

For inside your RV, a powerful fan with a bit of cheesecloth over the back will actually suck the skeeters in and pin them to the cheescloth, dehydrating and killing them.

I had good times with the bug suit, but that was throughout Northern Ontario Canada where the temps might be lower. If you're sleeping in/touring in your van, duct tape up your heating or cooling vents! The buggers will find their way in through those. Don't forget the vents that might be under the dash near calf level!

Oh of course the deep woods off is the best But my personal favorite is the Avon skin so soft the only problem with the Avon is you have to reapply very regularly. I use this when we go off shore fishing in Louisiana. Until you go outside of your camp on the last road from the Gulf of Mexico (the mosquitoes actually Hurt your limbs when they land and bite you look down and it’s like a blanket covering your legs there are so many mosquitoes. It would drive you insane) but the skin so soft and not one will come near you it’s amazing and as a extra benefit your skin feels great when you shower and it looks so healthy. Avon had no idea that this was going to happen but it was a great accident nothing else is as good because first no harmful chemicals and second you get very hydrated healthy skin. It’s expensive because of the fact you have to reapply but your health and sanity are so worth it. I think premethren is a chemical too I think that’s what they put in lice and crab and scabies shampoo

I fish at nite so bugs are at their greatest. Coleman citronella candles work well for me as does the Thermal cell. I’ll also use a head net on occasion but only the green ones because if they are black they are much more difficult to see through at nite. Also, no lights at nite until needed. Smoky camp fires also help if allowed. We are at their mercy in the end!

It's shocking how insanely hot a mesh hood/ suit will make you even in a decent wind, and good luck if you're in a humid environment especially if you're active. That said, they work best to keep your sanity so.... that said, don't waste your money on the cheep $1 Store versions- the mesh is not fine enough and the wee 'no-see-ums' / midges in particular crawl thru the holes and will drive you insane. The bee keeper hat you showed looks promising though the top of the hat needs to be mesh or have venting or you're going to be too hot still.

Thank you for sharing about DEET. That stuff is very toxic and potentially very bad for u! I realized how horrible it was when I was backpacking one year and the deet spilled on my plastic pancho; it literally melted through many layers of the plastic. If it can do that to plastic who knows what it can do to the human body. Also, I've had great luck using cedar essential oil. I've heard amazing things about the Avon skin so soft, but never tried it.

There are solar powered light bulbs you can hang alittle bit away from your rig that attracts them away from you at night. I believe they have some that kill too.

I bought a bug suit years ago, and found it to be a horrible idea. Maybe if it was treated with the Permethrin it would be okay, but mine wasn't treated with anything. The netting has all kinds of tiny holes, and if you think a mosquito can bite through clothing, you haven't seen what they can do when your suit already has a million holes! The netting is only effective where it is well away from your body, but too much of it lays right against you, just like your regular clothing would, and they feast in those areas! However, if treated, maybe it would work much better? The thing about Permethrin, however, is that we also can't exactly say that you aren't putting it on your body because if you put it on your clothing, and then your clothing is right next to your skin . . . right? Also, I seem to remember something about keeping it away from wet skin, though I may be misremembering that, but if that is the case, isn't sweaty skin wet skin? And the clothing with the chemical is getting damp because your skin is wet . . . I do, however, love the electric racket, and have a number of them at home. They are wonderful for chasing after and eliminating bugs.

So far, I haven't had much of an issue with mosquitos. Flies,yes. That battery operated racquet looks pretty nice! I used the permethrin on the outside of my tent where the floor meets the walls. Has worked well, I think.

News has it that malaria is making a comeback in the US. Mosquitos can be life threatening. There are soft screens one can hang and close with magnets for windows and doorways. A no-see-um screen would be best. That's a tighter weave than for mosquitoes if in that type area like Florida.

For 20 years I worked outdoors with ticks,spiders and mosquitoes. I was a bridge inspector and I would buy a quart of permethrin dilute it in a 5 gallon bucket of water. Follow the instructions for doing this. You soak your hats,pants,socks and shirts in the bucket wring the water out of them and hang to dry. Now you have several days of clothing to be worn outside. Take the water from your bucket and put into a garden sprayer then spray on the ground around your sitting or camping area. Works great. Your clothing will have a smell after soaking but goes away after drying.

I have used the one for treating clothing. It last until I washed the clothing 5-6 times. I use it in heavily forested areas or rain forests. I sprayed the day before packing. I also saturate my cap or hat with deet bug spray a great alternative to keeping it off my skin. I spray is away from everything and leave it there to dry before putting it on my head. It keeps mosquitoes and biting flies away from me when in my garden or picnicking in a park and walking paved trails. I found, quite accidentally, homemade oatmeal, eucalyptus bar soap helps, too! I can't use lotions. I will use deet as a backup in heavily infested areas. I keep a variety as different places have different pests or levels of pests. Everyone's system responds differently to treatments. However, my go to is eucalyptus lemon grass, it is very good. You have to apply it more, but worth it. It smells, but I kind of like it or I am just used to it. I am interested in trying Picaridin.

Another great video, thanks to Bob and crew. I have used Sawyer spray for years. I not only spray my clothes but also spray around the door of my house which reduces the number flies and mosquitoes that find their way in when the door is opened because it keeps them from hanging around the door. This year I found the Sawyer spray in an aerosol, I like that much better than the liquid pump sprayer. It comes out in a fine mist. I always spray my clothes on a hanger (outside, of course) and let them air dry. I find it easier to get full overage with the garment hanging. I have the battery powered tennis racket zappers and it is SO MUCH FUN to use! There's a great sense of satisfaction from seeing and hearing the bugs get zapped. lol I also have a Thermacell. I agree they are a little expensive, and so are the refills, so I don't use it often but, OMG, it works! When you want to sit outside and not wear sticky, stinky creams or sprays, Thermacell is the way to go. **For my dog** I use Natural Care+ spray, made specifically for dogs from botanical oils. My girl wears a flea & tick collar but that does not repel mosquitoes. This spray does, though, and it's not an unpleasant smell.

All Terrain Herbal Armor natural insect repellant is my go to for mosquitos. I apply it on exposed skin. Smells like walking into a fancy food co-op (essential oils) and isn't oily like the chemical stuff. Best of all it actually WORKS

Great video. I'll be getting that fly swatter you recommended. Also, something to think about when reviewing these things, some of us are very sensitive to smells and I know Skin So Soft used to smell so perfumy that I couldn't use it. My wife is the same. Everything we use is unscented because even unscented has a smell, but usually barrable especially when hung on the line outside before wearing. Thanks again for all the great reviews.

Tip… Folgers coffee grounds sprinkle them around your site on the ground it will help keep the mosquito away.

I like Moab describing their mosquitoes: wear netting at all times. Our prehistoric mosquitoes will eat your lotions, potions & you for dinner.

Great video Bob! I've used the Avon Skin So Soft insect repellant for years. They have a Picardin product as well as IR3535. With or without sunscreen.I have learned that Picardin and IR3535 are less toxic than deet and not irritating to the skin like deet. Of coarse everyone has different allergies and sensitivities.

You didn’t mention any of the repellents that use sound. I’ve tried a couple and had some interesting results… at least in suburban back yard situations. They might not do as well in a wilderness situation, but they might help. Apparently, the idea is that pregnant female mosquitoes are the ones who bite, so these things supposedly emit a very high frequency sound that mimics the sound of a male mosquito, which is the last thing a pregnant female mosquito wants to be around! I had three solar charged ones. Very small. I put a string on them so that they would be worn like a necklace. I went to an outdoor concert with some friends which started in the evening; mosquito feeding time. Three of us wore them and were not bothered. Of course there were other people all around with candles so that might have helped. Another time I was visiting a friend and others in his back yard for dinner; mosquito feeding time. He had a can of spray on the picnic table. I had my three sound repellents. My friend came by and asked “How’s the mosquitoes, bad?” And everyone said no, no problem. No one was using his spray. Those solar ones eventually died, but my friend found a battery powered one that I still have. I don’t go out at feeding time much these days, but I think I did manage to test it a couple times to see it work.

I had a cookout in Pearl MS around June 25 and couldn't find citronella candles so i tried a couple of sachets of lemongrass/ citronella Wycombe had a very pleasant scent and sprinkled them on the ground around the grilling area and it kept the mosquitoes away from five adults and three children for five or six hours!!!

I use skin so soft to keep away midges in Scotland. Works well but sometimes you need head net and a smokey fire!

About 10 yrs ago my dog and I both got Lyme disease. It was brutal we had to take medication and we got a hotel for a few days to recover. I was in PA and since both the dog and I got it together Geisinger paid for all the treatments if I participated in a survey session. Other than that I really have no problems with mosquitos biting just more of an annoyance to me. Not using deodarants and scented soaps helps. If worried about body odor then change your diet to more of a plant based diet.

I cannot handle full strength Deet but my vehicle can. I usually put some of it (the highest concentration lotion version that sticks around) on things I can attach to my vehicle where I'm not at (the driver's side). That at least creates a bit of a mosquito free bubble. I'll sometimes put it along the rubber of my shoes as well for walking.

I actually moved out of my apartment into my 2007 Saturn ion till I save enough to get a van to transform into my home I actually stay in my car outside my daughter's house in the Catskills she has a lot of woods & lots of them I come to find out fresh scent baby wipes also works very good just take the wipes wipe both of your arms u can even brush the wipes against your clothes it has worked for me

I use a deet free mosquito/tick repellent called 'Beat It" It's made by Jade & Pearl in Florida, and it works great!

I am one of the people who swears by Skin So Soft. It has always worked for me. I put it on my arms, legs and neck. Been using it for over 30 years!!!! They have other products as well.
