A mosquito killer lamp teardown. Runs for an hour or so on a lithium 18650 1200mAh cell. Charged from 5V USB. Contains a lithium cell charger chip and a high voltage generator.

I recently bought a similar one, without the white light and without the Li-Ion. It runs on a cheap 5v 1A charger and I measured about 0.4A during runtime, and it has killed a lot of fruit flies and mosquitos. It's running 24/7.

Mosquitoes also can carry a number of diseases from other living things. That's the last thing anyone needs to deal with these days. I would have bug zappers all over my backyard if I could afford it, most all flies and mosquitoes go right for me when I'm outside and ignore almost everyone else 😢😢

That 22MOhm resistor is not rated for such high voltage in such a small package! They should have used properly rated resistors or added 5-6 pieces of 10M resistors in series. In my mosquito zapper bat, there's also a Cockroft Walton voltage multiplier that increases the voltage to 3kV. Originally, it had a 33nF / 2kV polyester film capacitor. I added a 68nF / 2kV cap and a 22nF / 2kV cap in parallel, and now mosquito zapping is a blast! The increased current (due to the low capacitor ESR and doubling the capacitance) doesn't just zap the mosquitoes; it instantly fries and blasts them! BTW, the one you have doesn't just zap mosquitoes. It also zaps other insects, innocent crane-flies, probably lizards, and even midges, which are completely harmless...

Those 2kv caps don't last long due to constant shorts. Usually have to be changed every 6 to 9 months.

I tried one of these for some small flies that were annoying. No idea if they were gnats or fruit flies maybe but they were too small to touch both wires so it did not work for me. I'm looking for a smaller mesh size for the future. I ended up leading the pets out of the house by leaving a light on in the hallway to draw them out of the room they were in and then the back porch to get them out of the house. One light on at a time

I can guarantee those LEDs are ultraviolet, I have a lamp a lot like this and it emits that same purple light when it's on, but if I hold a sheet of paper up to it, the paper glows a white-blue, and much brighter than the visible purple light.I guess the ultraviolet LEDs output ultraviolet AND purple at the same time so you know it's on.

It charges at 5 Watts. It probably doesn't draw nearly as much when in operation. You should get considerably more than one hour runtime. You should test it and maybe swap in a better battery anyway.

Wasps are aragant and wil sting you for no reason, while bees won't unless you bother them. All Wasps should be removed. They are just a bloody nuisance.

Pity you didn't measure that actual current draw, I think you'll find it's much less than the 5w on the label .... Maybe 5w when it's exterminating, or when using then white LEDs.

I'd expect it would. If not you could likely trick it with a 4-4.2V Zener diode (plus current limiting resistor) in place of the cell (seen that done on tablets repurposed for stationary work after the battery died)

I am not sure why these traps use ultraviolet lamps for mosquitoes the prey or blood host does not emit any light at all and are active at night in many places where there no light source . Flies and other insects are attracted to ultraviolet many flowers reflect frequencies in that wave length. I know that there are mosquito traps that use CO2 and infrared to attract then zap them both of which would work in the dark as well as the light

Would have liked to know if it runs directly from the 5v1A supply for 24/7 use? Does it charge at the full 1 amp when the lipo is at minimum charge state? What voltage does it carry on the high side, and can it be "tuned" closer to the gap between the wires to make it more effective if an object fails to make mechanical contact between the leads?

@@JulianIlett Not really. The can see polarized light which helps the females find water to lay their eggs in, but they are far more attracted to our CO2, body heat and other smells. There have been a few studies on "bug zapper" lights and they've shown them largely ineffective. They mostly end up killing moths.
@bfelten1

@@yaroc07 Exactly. That's why the pet bottle trap is much more effective when used correctly. Half a litre of active "Moonshine soup" will produce more CO2 than us humans, so a couple of those surrounding the BBQ party are very effective. Been there, tried that, got no bites to show for it. 🙂

I got a refund from AliExpress, because it is a weak lamp, and they falsely claimed it would cover a ridiculously huge area, and it barely attracted any insects compared to my standard UV insect k-ller!
