The fourth De Havilland Mosquito restored in New Zealand by Mosquito Aircraft Restorations and Avspecs, T.43 NZ2308, was featured on the NZ current affairs TV show Seven Sharp on March 21st, 2024. The piece - hosted by Michael Holland - interviews MAR and Avspecs employees and test pilot Steve Hinton, and pays tribute to the late Glyn Powell, who was the mastermind of the modern-day "production line" of Mosquito rebuilds in NZ.
This aircraft was originally built for the Royal Australian Air Force as A52-1054 and was sold to the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1947, becoming NZ2308. Upon retirement in the early `1950s it had flown 479hr 35min and went on to become derelict at a South Island farm, before being rescued by museum volunteers and taken to Auckland. Later it was purchased by a syndicate led by Owyn Fenner which aimed to restore the hulk to fly, but ultimately one member - Glyn Powell - persevered, keeping NZ2308 as his personal aircraft while he and his growing team of engineers worked on other customers' aircraft, and Warren Denholm's Avspecs was contracted for final assembly and fitout.

So pleased she's heading for UK. We've been without one flying in the land of their birth for far too long. A beautiful machine.

To be clear, the next one on the line is headed to the UK - this is another US-bound example.

I had the privilege of hearing a Mosquito overflying me, many years ago, when I was out for a drive in my car. Everyone effuses about the sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin, and rightly so. I regularly get Spitfires flying over my house and yes, they sound glorious. The lancaster has twice as many engines as the Mossie, so should sound twice as good. But there's something about the twin engined Mossie sound that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I don't know if it's because the Mossie flies faster than the Lanc, or whether it was something to do with syncopation, but for me the sound of the twin Merlins is the absolute best.

The first time I saw one fly I fully expected a Mossie to sound like two Hurricanes or Spitfires together, but it really is something else!!

It seems misleading to talk about these aircraft as being "restored" when the main structural elements are new. I was surprised at the cost- being lower than I expected given the quality of technicians, the time required and expensive components. Hinton has one of the best jobs in the aviation industry.

When I grow up I want to be Steve! A big thing to remember about the Mosquito is there’s more metal and non-wood parts than one might expect. It’s a delicate question and some folk can get very fired up discussing restoration v replica!

I had the pleasure of visiting Avspecs a number of years ago while they were assembling the second Mosquito - there are a huge number of metallic components in there…. Superb workmanship and very friendly people. Lovely to hear no 5 is coming “home” to the UK. A sadly missed shape in the sky since the tragic loss of the BAE one.

Did you sortie around Hamilton today? My house was below your flight path, I was on look out because another fast mover came in about an hour earlier from Ardmore
