We're taking a look at a shotgun we've already reviewed - The Mossberg 500. Our original review was with Steve's first shotgun, a Mossberg 500 from 2007. Since, Mossberg has released a new version of this gun, well kind of... This new variation is called the "Retrograde" and it is a throwback to the look of Mossberg's first tactical pumps. So how does this compare with a 2007 vintage Mossberg 500? Let's find out!

The Mossbergs there is just something about them - aggressive, intimidating, primal! My old service 590A1 would put the fear of God into anyone, I never felt under gunned when I carried her out on patrol in bad dark places. The sight of it provoking utter fear into the indigenous Indo- Bulgarian would be trouble makers 😮 . I thought about purchasing one as a civilian but I go hunting for wild boar so I prefer the Auto 5 but this 500 looks like a civilised gun fit for hunting. I just might get one just for the memories...

I’ve learned if you have a couple magnets to help with the cartridge stop and interrupter it keeps them in place without all the headaches of reinstalling them after a cleaning , Great looking furniture, makes it look like a old school shotgun from back in the 50s and 60s .

I wish you could get the 500 retro with a normal forearm. The round ribbed forearm looks cheap, and is in fact the same style adopted by the cheaper brother maverick 88's. I really wish we could just have the choice, since that dark walnut is so nice looking.

My 500 has never failed. Deer, turkey, small game, trap, just fooling around, always functions. Yeah, it's not the smoothest pump gun, but, never fails.

If I could only have one shotgun it might be a Mossberg 500. Absolute tank and I always know what I have. Also, awesome discount on the choke tubes. New choke for turkey season here I come.

I shot a 500 for sporting and trap last year. Put a little over 2500rds through without issue (other than a couple short-stroke jams). You might like my set up, 500 bantam with a hogue 14” LOP stock. The bantam is a 3” action but has shorter action bars and a shorter fore grip. I end up with a full length stock but a shorter reach to the sweet spot on the fore grip.

He ran the 870 much better. I love Mossberg firearms. You get pretty good quality at an affordable price. The 500 just doesn't fit me well trying to run the slide. I'm sure it is a tank but I like the 870 better.

The more you shoot a 500 the faster it gets. Takes time and rounds to lose it up a bit. I also put mine threw a lot of rough stuff a lot of rough stuff. And it never failed me.

my first duck gun was the 500, but back when the 3.5 inch version was introduced...probably 1990??? Steve- please confirm the date...I did like it and it came in a bird/deer combo barrel package. after getting hooked on duck hunting, I went to a semi auto Rem 11-87 special package. If I wanted to get another mossberg, I'd probably go with the 940 pro. yet I'm super happy with my new A400 plus.

The only thing I would change about that Mossberg Retrograde would be the forend. I would send the gun to a gunsmith and have a longer forend made. Ideal length for a forend, at least in my perspective, would be the length of a Benelli SuperNova forend

I'm posting this question everywhere. Mossberg 500 and Maverick 88. Not the gauge of the shell but the gauge of the metal of the barrel that encircles the shell. Is there a difference in the gauge of the metal between the two or are they the same width? Anybody.

Steve, I have only shot around 1,000 shells with an old Mossberg 500. The gun was not routinely maintained. I experienced no mechanical problem, even though I shot about 200 shells each time in about two hours. Perry P.

500 was the first "new" shotgun I ever had and got it for my 11th birthday. I put it through hell and never cleaned it. It was fixed full choke, no sling studs, no mid bead. I bought it from Western Auto. THe first gun I got had a cracked forearm. I sent it back and weeks later I got another gun that the vent rib was welded on crooked and I sent it back. The third gun came in and the mag tube and barrel had deep scratches from the factory that were blued over. I kept that one. Great gun and bullet proof!

The one problem with new shot guns the new guns are cheepley made and my opinion not safe you want a good shot gun the best ever made Modle 37 Ithaca feather weight pump gun. Reliable never jams and get one with a full choke best bird gun ever also holds a great pattern with buck shot

I’ve put thousands of rounds in my 500 in sporting clays league Never had a problem until the fore end split on a humid hot summer night. Replaced it with a laminate set from Boyd’s. Still love it.

I am 57. My first shotgun was a used Revelation 20 gauge, which was a rebranded 500 with a steel frame. My son has that shotgun now. I have a 20 year old 500 in 12 gauge and it has been extremely reliable. I am interested in this retro version. I love pump shotguns.

My first shotgun was a Mossberg 500 approx 45 yrs ago. Since that time I have owned and still own many pump and semi auto shotguns including Remington 870's along with 33 yrs in law enforcement where the 870 was the go to long gun for many years. My opinion is the 870 is more reliable and durable than the 500.

In a battle of mossberg500 vs remington870n o used to sat I'd take an 870 but I'm back at mossberg. I like the aluminum receiver that doesn't rust(remingtons are terrible these days). I also far prefer the tang safety vs the 870 push button

The new RemArms manufactured 870s have a different composition to their bluing. Appears to be more durable and resistant to the elements than the stuff Freedom Group owned Remington Arms Company LLC was slathering on a few years ago. I've had the opportunity to dive into two of the new Fieldmasters. Off the bat comparing them to an 870 Express purchased in 2016, pretty much every single component has smoother better machining. The finish is better looking and more consistent. Function was flawless.

I realize that Mossberg pays your way , but why on earth would try to force a gun to fit you when it clearly does not? If the pump is too far away from your hand adding a recoil pad that increases LOP will only make it worse.

No, the Mossberg 500 is not made for speed shooting, but it is the gun (20" pump holds 7 shells) I keep in the bedroom to protect my wife & I from home intruders. Why ? Because it will shoot any time I pull the trigger & it will shoot anything I put in it. PS ... I love to shoot clays with an O/U, or a semiauto. (ie ... pick the right tool for the job).

Great reliability? You fired 10 rounds and had one that stuck in the chamber! lol At best the modern 500’s are cheap guns that mostly go boom and that’s about the best you can say about them. My advice it to buy an old full choke model 12 (they sale for peanuts if you look around) and either bore it out or have it multi choked. 👍🏼

I've never liked the Mossberg 500. Out of the box the fit is just wrong, stock dimensions are just a bit weird for me. The pistol grip is too chunky for my liking, LOP is too short, the drop at the comb and heel isn't quite right and it slaps me in the cheek every time I shoot one. Mechanical issues? A friend and I went squirrel hunting once. He fell stepping over a log and dropped the gun. The shell elevator arm popped out of its hole in the receiver, went unnoticed by my friend and when they went to rack in a shell it locked the whole gun up. Also seen a few with out of spec cartridge stops inducing double feeds or not feeding at all. Since I started coaching a high school shooting team I've seen a bunch get cases stuck in the chamber, used to think that was just a Remington 870 problem. Appears to be more of a sub $500 shotgun problem apparently.
