A look at the Mossberg 590 in 12ga.
6+1, smooth bore pump shotgun.
I show some upgrades I've done, that have really improved the capability of this weapon. As well as the accuracy and patterning of this shotgun, with high quality ammo.
I've been able to make consistent, effective and ethical patterns out to 35 yards with this factory smooth bore, using Federal Flitecontrol 8 pellet low recoil tactical buckshot.

Bought this exact gun recently. Also set it up with gray magpul furniture. Offset that with a coyote brown magpul sling, and side saddle cards. Also added a tan mounted flashlight and red dot. I love it. Badass gun.

The shotgun is still absolutely relevant and an extremely effective fight stopper. Provided you have the right setup, ammo and techniques, it can be an absolute nightmare on the receiving end! A critical point to consider with a shotgun and chosen ammunition, is the patterning, which determines your maximum effective/ethical range. When I say "effective/ ethical" I mean the maximum distance that you can guarantee all projectiles stay in the meaty bits, of a human target. I subscribe to a pretty tight standard here, with the goal of allowing zero deviation. As you've heard it said many times before- "Every bullet has a lawyer attached to it." The same goes for every pellet of Buckshot. If you're shooting 9 pellet buckshot that patterns so wide that only 4 pellets hit the target, where did those other 5 lethal projectiles go? You are accountable for all of them. This particular shotgun patterns pretty dang well, with high quality shells. I've been able to achieve a slug size hole at 10 yards, all the way up to a 9" spread at 35 yards. Using the Federal Flitecontrol 8 pellet low recoil tactical buckshot. I've set my maximum "effective/ ethical" range for this load at 35 yards. I know that I can control and place a 9" group with reasonable surety that I'll keep all pellets in the meaty bits. As always, your mileage will vary and so will your individual shotgun barrel.

In my case my in home ive got everything at 20" or less cylinder bore with mini shells... For my truck its a 18.5" barrel with 2 3/3" with #7.5 in the tube with a modified choke and buck in the saddle... In my work van its loaded with less lethal rounds like rubber buck or bean bag rounds and an improved choke... Since the tubes and chokes are based on what i could reasonably expect to need out of it...

I got the 590A1 that's 6+1 capacity. The 18" is adequate for home defense though I get why people like the 20" so they can put the bayonet on and turn it into a trench gun from WWI. The only issue out of the box I had was the mag tube spring was a tad light and it was hard to feed or manually unload the last shell. I think Mossberg put in the same spring from their 5+1 mag tube and it's just a tad too short to put enough pressure on the last shell in the 6+1 tube I had. I wrote Mossberg and they sent me a replacement but the issue remained. I got a higher pressure spring from Wolff and the problem is resolved. I also installed the Magpul furniture and the QD attachments. Plus a Surefire light (500 Lumens). So, aside from mine being the A1 variant, we seem to have a similar setup. I think you'll be happy with it. The Magpul furniture is a must IMO. I love the ergonomics of the hybrid pistol grip and standard stock. I added that to my Remington 870 as well.

The 18.5 is ideal for home defense, IMHO. I do prefer the higher capacity and aesthetic that comes with the 20".... But that's not a deal breaker at all, in our context. The Magpul furniture is awesome. The stock REALLY makes a difference in the ability to control the recoil, given proper technique. I'm glad you're squared away!

I purchased a 590 recently and proceeded to clean it first thing. I am not new to shotguns, but this was my first MB shotgun. The barrel bore is not smooth and shiny like every other firearm I have owned. It is black inside and as rough as the outside of the barrel. Is this a Mossberg thing with all of their shotguns, or is it something that made it past QC checks before leaving the factory? My Remingtons, Ithacas, and Winchesters all have a shiney pristine bore.
@prudentcitizentraining
@prudentcitizentraining Жыл бұрын
I honestly don't know. I didn't inspect the barrel prior to firing. The lower end 590s seem to be no frills work horse guns. They definitely aren't polished machines from the factory. I haven't looked at the 590A1 or other models, so see if they are smoother.

IMHO the Magpul SGA is a MUST for a shotgun. I like just about everything about it. very ergonomic, comfortable.... And There's a lot of available adjustment for length of pull. I add a couple spacers since this video, after I realized that my thumb didn't HAVE to hit me in the face, at a Sentinel Concepts class.

Always interested in fighting shotgun content. 590a1, 1301LLT and m4 LE/Mil here. Maybe you could do some work and comparisons with the above? No sir, not only is the fighting shotgun not dead, it never was for those in the know.

Thanks for the input! I don't currently have access to a 1301 or M4, but I'd like to do some comparison at some point. We just got 930 spx tactical at work (private security). I'll try to get some comparisons against the 590.
