SRAM vs Shimano bicycle components
Many people don't realize just how small Sram bicycle components were in the early 90s. Coming into an industry where a company like Shimano had 80% of the market was going to be no easy task but they were up for a challenge.

Thank you all for the great cycling history video ideas! I'd love to do a video or two on some of the more interesting cycling personalities throughout the years so let me know what you all think

I've been enjoying your bike industry history vids - good job on finding and editing in shots of source material while presenting the narrative. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but I feel like e-bikes became widespread in only the last few years, and I don't remember hearing anything about them back in 2001, yet, in the article you show ar 2:37, that appears to be from a trade mag and dated from 2001, there is an ad on the right saying, "Become a Himiway e-bike dealer," which caught my eye. Maybe a history of e-bikes would be interesting [tbh I am not a huge fan of them, the way some people ride them on bike trails and bike lanes, nor the way bike shop sales staff now seem to even give preference to e-bike customers - probably bc of their higher profit margin. Nonetheless, they are great for people like my parents and even some of my terribly out of shape siblings to enjoy riding and get a level of exercise that suits them, and they are having a huge effect on the bike industry].

Very interesting! Keep this kind of content coming. I am pretty sure you are the only KZfaqr producing this stuff. As an MTBer since the late 80s I love these strolls back to the dawn of our sport. Oh, and 100% agree on SRAM brakes! Give me Shimano every time. Of course also give me SRAM shifting every time! (11s XX1 w/XTR brakes on my current ride is perfect)

I just purchased a Specialized Turbo Levo Comp Alloy, but was unable to ride the brand new bike because the SRAM code r brakes needed to be bled. I had 1 hour before the shop closed and sadly the was not enough time to get the job done. Thursday I will have the entire day to battle the bleeding edge brakes. Or I might just take them off and put the 4 piston AliExpress mineral oil brakes I have sitting in the draw.

I do not think I have ever used SRAM anything til last year. I bought a BB and crankset for a MTB I had. When I was cycling heavy in the late 80's and early 90's, I only used Campagnolo and Shimano on occasion. When I started back up last year, I have been using Advent X from Microshift.

I am willing to bet Shimano wishes they had buried SRAM in legal fees back then...

firstly, i c shimano as a microsoft of the bike industry. Only SRAM has dared go up against them for predatory pricing, but what abt governments? i've seen lots of governments come down hard on microsoft & facebook, but not on shimano. Why? 2nd, i live in singapore, pretty close to the shimano factory. i've cycled past many times on rides. A bike shop near my house 1ce told me he ran out of shimano 105 chains, & hes not the only 1; when the factory is just up the road?!? this is my personal opinion, but i would say shimano is trying 2 squeeze the consumers. The problem with singapore, shimano has a virtual monopoly!

Sram bought Sachs for their derailleurs mostly, that and their hydraulic brakes.....and hubs. You get it? Sachs was way ahead of SRAM in their path towards being a full line builder.... Cannondale was doing it in-house (badly) with their 'CODA' products, and SRAM chose the All-American way of buying up every one of the tiny companies that were building for the booming MTB market and trying to fit all that together into a steaming pile of junk stew. Shimano just turned around and brought out XTR in 1991, guaranteeing them the #1 top dog spot in MTB drivetrains for the next 20 years, so 'buh-bye SRAM'! 😁🤣

I agree. Shimano’s drivetrains in the 90’s we’re beautiful and simple. The tides have evened things up- I would say it’s even shifted in Sram’s favor in the MTB scene now (the new Transmission drivetrain is pretty great and super tough)

Not a big fan of modern components (cough) cause they just break in half, if Sram just made breaks that work they would be #1
