4 controversies in this game: 1. Martin Sneddon’s catch of Greg Chappell when he was on 58. Sneddon clearly catches the ball above the ground, however the umpires deems it not out. Chappell went on to score 90. 2. Richard Hadlee’s LBW. Shocking call from the umpire as the ball is clearly pitched outside leg stump 3. Dennis Lillee was not in position when the final ball was bowled, so Australia had too many fielders outside the ring, meaning it should’ve been a no-ball. 4. The underarm ball NZ were absolutely robbed in this game

I'm American and I know cricket very well. Been watching the sport for about 4 years. As for this bullshit, this is the most despicable and most controversial moment in sports history. WTF the Chappell brothers was thinking? They were thinking about cheating by using underarm bowling that the early cricketers used in the 1700s to mid 1800s. The rulebook stated that underarm bowling can't be used. Why the umpire won't give Trevor Chappell's underarm bowling a no bowl? If I were the damn umpire in this match, I would've give him a no ball. The umpire was very stupid and they didn't know the rule of underarm bowling being banned in cricket.

In 1981 one-day cricket was a relatively new sport and crowds had not seen many close finishes like that, especially in internationals. Underarm bowling was not actually illegal, it is just that nobody did it as it was considered unfair. Greg Chappell made a decision based on "win at all costs". He said in later years that he regretted it but. New Zealanders have never fully forgiven him for it. Brian McKechnie got his revenge years later in a joke during a charity match in which he produced a bowling ball and rolled it to Chappell who was batting. For the record I am a New Zealander. The thing that always got to me was that there was very little chance of a 6 being hit on the large MCG, it was unnecessary to bowl underarm. But the year or two before against the WI in the old WSC the WI hit 6 off the last ball to deny Australia the title, this was in there minds. But still....... not good.

don't forget the batsman needed a six to win, not one or two, makes even more umbelieviable
@AARCPowerConsulting9 жыл бұрын
***** Well a no ball and a six would have made NZ win. So there are always possibilities. Just my 2 cent.
@davidlp30196 жыл бұрын
Actually no. As far as I know it was a 6 to tie the match off the last ball.
@davidtuer58256 жыл бұрын
Well, a no ball is a "no ball" and has to be bowled again and any runs accruing to the no ball count.

I was at the game. I have never been so ashamed as an Aussie and was sickened by the fact that about half of the crowd cheered the result. I admired Greg Chappell as a batsman but after that incident all of his achievements meant nothing to me.

I remember feeling sick to my guts when I saw this when it happened! A 6 needed off the last ball to tie the match, not win it...and what were the odds that the batsman would hit a six? Well we'll never know because the low down bastards never gave him a sporting chance to do it. "The underarm incident" = The day sportsmanship died in Australia.

I'm Australian and still look at this with shame. It's not cheating, but it's not CRICKET. And don't blame all Australians. We disowned it at the time and Greg Chappell went from being a great captain to a complete outcast for telling his brother Trevor to bowl underarm.
@rw87339 ай бұрын
Exactly. As a Brit, we've just had the Bairstow "run out" in the 2023 Ashes. Not cheating, but NOT "cricket."
@timmartindale759 ай бұрын
Except it's exactly the tactic Bairstow himself, as keeper, had tried not once, but twice already in that very match. What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. @@rw8733

Only an Australian cricket team would do such a thing. The saddest thing is, the likelihood that the new batsman would hit a 6 on the last ball is quite low and NZ couldn't win the game anyway even if they did.

There was no need of an underarm at all. No decent batsman left. And NZ required a 6 for a tie! And it was MCG - so not easy to hit a six anyway. Disgraceful.
@davidtuer58256 жыл бұрын
So there was nothing wrong with bowling the last ball underarm, the batsman was incapable anyway??
@kalyanbv10006 жыл бұрын
D avid Tuer That's not what he meant. He was just reading the situation and it was totally unnecessary. Could have won it even on fair play.

I'll never forget this. The dog Greg Chappell sacrificed his own brother's cricketing carreer to win. As Greg marsh was seen saying."Nah mate" Greg Chappel the most over-rated egotistical cricketer ever to be in the game.
@garthrogers22696 жыл бұрын
Apparently, their older brother Ian (former Aussie captain) tried to phone the dressing room to yell at them, but couldn't get through at first. When he finally did get through, he laid into Greg who responded that he wished that Ian would give him a break as Don Bradman had just finished yelling at him.
@thomasmahoney49919 жыл бұрын
That bowler is even worse than I thought, he doesn't even believe in himself enough to bowl a ball normally. If he was a good bowler, he would have bowled a different speed or bowled a good length bowl that was slightly slower, to catch out the batsman. What an idiot.

You are kind of missing the point. In actual fact it was not impossible for Australia to lose, what if the final ball was a no-ball or a wide? There would still have been a chance, albeit a minuscule one but still a chance.

Aidankiwi,very rarely slow bowlers like that bowl no balls,usually its the fast bowlers that do.
