Some Sporting players deserted the club when their training academy was raided by a mob of angry fans, there were a lot of questions about how they got in, and it was an issue with further developments, also the players that deserted Sporting with no monetary compensation and some weren't even in the academy and even if they were none was harmed, and one that was harmed ended up staying, ironic I know, they were almost all fan favorites who had been in the club´s youth academy and the fans watched them progress to the senior team, that was an issue, even I as a die-hard Sporting fan held some serious grudges against those guys but there were a few instances of people burning a jersey or other more extreme forms of showing discontent with a specific player in social media, in that instance I kinda got it.

It depends on how the player leaves. There are players that leave in a way that isn't exactly classy. Like forcing a move by striking or being "injured" or going behind the clubs back to orchestrate a move. No fan is happy if their star player leaves and said they did it because they wanted to win something since it's practically him saying that your club is shit. Or having their agent talk shit in the media and so on. Players have much more power in football transfers then in American sports. If a player doesn't want to leave, then there isn't much the club can do that won't cost them a small fortune. And a player can do a lot to hurt the clubs image if he doesn't get a move. Usually we only see scenes like in these videos when it's long serving players that have done a lot for the club. For very likable players in general (they are surprisingly few). And for legends of the sport. Or for homegrown players. There are some fans that do burn shirts and so on and in football, I believe it's much more justified then in American sports. If you are a class player that leaves a club, it's usually not the clubs decision. They want to keep their best players and don't really have a salery cap to deal with. In American sports, it's usually the team/franchise that trades the player without the player having much say in the matter unless you are an absolute superstar. Hating on a players transfer is more justified in football since they are usually the ones that instigate the move. There are some real snakes out there that have screwed over the clubs and their fans in the process of leaving.
