I did the same thing. Picked up Wild Arms 5 and Suikoden 5 at a used video game shop for around $40-$50 each around 5 years ago, friends thought I was nuts paying that much for an old PS2 game, but I was a huge JRPG fan, didn't have a newer playstation yet, so I bought both. Today I think both of those games are going in the $150-$200 range. DOn't plan I selling either one, since I love both games.

I have all of the Xenosaga and .Hack titles. Didn't think the price would get that ridiculous but given how the gaming market throws games to the wayside it's rather disappointing they don't try to preserve or at least port them to each next gen console. There are some out there that we can never get back because of this.

I grabbed it dirt cheap used at a Gamestop waaaaay back in the day. I had no idea what it was, but I saw the Square logo and thought "why not?" I got stuck partway through, then grabbed the first game for even cheaper, beat it, then finished 2 and was thankful I finished 1 first because the story really connected after where I was stuck 😂 It's crazy though, how cheap those games were. They were like misfit games nobody heard of or wanted, and then look at 2 now. I still have them both sitting on my shelf.

That kind of makes sense. The Xenosaga series did not perform as well as Square wanted so it got wrapped up double quick. And with Episode II hemorhaging fans with its weird, more realistic look, before toning back up on the anime influence, not a lot of people stuck around for 3.
@k.s.2935
@k.s.2935 Жыл бұрын
@@Bustermachine Squaresoft didn't develop Xenosaga, Monolith Soft did. Squaresoft developed Xenogears. From what I remember at the time, the different art direction wasn't a deal breaker (people kind of expected it might change art styles with every episode after Ep.II) aside from people's reactions to Shion and KOS-MOS, who were the most drastic changes. The fact that whoever at Namco or Monolith decided to change the writers and to alter the story the original writers put down (which would have been WAAAAYYY better). was it's nail in the coffin. The drop in quality of the writing and direction is tangible a little after halfway through the game.

I thought I should add a minor correction: Xenosaga 3 was NOT correcting anything from Xenosaga 1. Xenosaga 1 had few to no complaints, was VERY well received and very well liked by fans of the series and newcomers alike. I suppose the only issue players generally had, was the story was both too convoluted and overly complex, while what we're exposed to in the game is far too short for what it should have been. However this complaint related to convoluted is common for even the 3rd game, and that game has the inverse complaint of doing too much with too short a game...they planned on 7~9 games, and had to attempt to finalize it with the 3rd. The ONLY reason Xenosaga 3 was created at all was due to the popularity of Xenosaga 1. The issue, and the SOLE issue was Xenosaga 2, which had three core problems players complained about: 1 - the pure RPS battle system, and Momo's breaking of that rule, followed by inverted RPS rules related to the gears. It's not that RPS tactics were inherently a problem, as they were distinct from Gears and Saga 1, which did not force Atlus rules of 1 attack type dealing damage, and the rest barely chipping away. It really made party makeup VERY frustrating at times, as often due to forced characters, only one character was capable of taking out baddies in any one battle, or just one enemy, while sometimes NO character is capable of actually dealing real damage, forcing some really long battles. 2 - and an addendum to the RPS is the encounter rate in general was insanely high, even for most jRPG's. A few spots were acceptable, but especially at the start, it was absurd. This would be a non-issue if the battle system rehashed Saga 1, but given the forced RPS adding a LOT of extra time for every single battle, at least until mid-game when skills and ether powers expanded, it was extremely frustrating. As a result, very few players got passed the first five hours of play, getting to Ziggy. 3 - story direction changes, and some shocking character changes that overwrote the first game. Also the EXTREMELY slow start, when the ending of the first game would necessarily force a speedier start to the second game. The biggest issue was dramatic alterations to character personalities and even motivations, with ZERO explanation at any point. ....4 - technically one less significant issue, was character model changes ....5 or 1.1 and 3.1 - function changes especially as it relates to KOS-MOS. This is especially true when considering how nerfed KOS-MOS was both in her actual abilities, but more so, her STORY abilities. This was actually a huge controversy. Momo's sudden uber power up was also somewhat of an inside joke. She was useful in the original, but absolutely essential in most early game parties at the start, being almost the only character who could deal damage in nearly EVERY normal battle in the first 30 hours of the game.

I read all of it just fine dude. And I agree completely. One thing I'd add to #2 was the frequency of 4-enemy encounters, making annoyingly long battles that much more of a wretched slog. And Momo's sudden boost didn't bother me. Sure it was strange as hell, especially since I hardly used her in Ep. 1, but I was just happy to have a party member who could do damage AT ALL. Seriously what a bizarre game!

I personally felt 1 was the weakest of the series in terms of mechanics. Definitely not story, obviously, but the mechanics bugged me. Having to constantly level up 2 people in the same stat in order for them to go higher in said stat was an insane mechanic that just removed the fun of the game for me. I didn't originally know about it and my characters were super weak once they got pretty far into the game. After learning about it I realized that I couldn't really have any diversity. Every character would have the same stats essentially, so outside of their own differences per character, I couldn't specialize one in one way and another in another way. The newer games rectified this problem by simplifying the systems. I did like Xenosaga's way of handling stuff outside of that one MAJOR gripe though. If only it didn't have that one huge limit it could have been such a satisfying system. Maybe some characters could have become a bit overpowered, I dunno, but I would have rather they balanced it out in some way rather than limited characters to all be essentially the same in terms of stats. I did feel 2 was a bit odd, but it was probably my distaste in them replacing VAs for all of my favorite characters. They did it in 3 as well, but they were much more similar to the cast of the original, and Shion's VA came back to us.

Changing writers partway through Episode II's production and largely altering what previous writers had for the story was the downfall of Episode II. To this day, still never found out what reason they had to do, though the drop in quality of the writing was tangible enough to be painful in the later parts of the game where it started to feel "off". A damn shame we didn't get to see Jr. change into an adult and use Red Dragon Mode, and team up with KOS-MOS in her upgraded form to take on U-DO at the end of the game.

I still have all 7 of my .hack games for PS2, I bought each and every one as soon as it came out. Other than friends I tried introducing to the series, I never just came across another person who liked it or knew what it was, it seemed so obscure despite being one of my favorites. Fast forward several years and I start to hear a buzzing about how coveted some of these games are, especially Quarantine, and it was crazy to think about each time I literally just walked into a store and got each game right off of the shelf like it was no big deal. I really treasure those games, and they're some of my shining gems of my PS2 collection. Also, at one point several years ago, every PS2 Shin Megami Tensei was reprinted and if I remember directly, they only went for like, 20 bucks a piece. I already owned Persona 3 and 4, but none of the other PS2 SMT games, so I went ahead and grabbed them all. Both Raidou games, both Devil Saga games, and Nocturne. Now some of those, like Raidou, have freaking skyrocketed and I can't believe that random impulse buy back in the day is now a little treasure trove.

Oh yea, Steambot Chronicles was amazing, truly a shame that the sequel was canned due to the tragic 2011 disaster that hit Japan. Should have explained a bit more about the game's control system, which was quite interesting, as it went with a setup similar to Katamari Damacy in that you use both analog sticks to move in your desired direction, while the shoulder buttons were used for controlling the arms and performing jumps and dashes. I will say that while the game did start off very cliche with the amnesia plot, I liked how it actually winds up just being used to excuse how you shape Vanilla into the character you want, rather than being the convenient plot excuse of revealing something similarly cliched like "you were the villain everyone was afraid of" or "you're the ancient hero who vanished and is destined to return". Nope, once you find the character who can confirm your origins, it's just a matter of deciding what Vanilla may have been like prior to the start of the game. Of course, it was a shame how some choices didn't have nearly as far-reaching consequences as certain others did. You could be mean to a character in one moment, and hours later, going through a key scene in which the character acts like you weren't being a jackass to them the other day. Beyond that, the game really was a blast to play, and I'd love to see it get revived in some form or another, either through a resurrected sequel, or a remake on modern hardware.

boggles my mind how these titles are considered rare and expensive. i remember buying most of these from gamestop either new or used and not think about it, for cheap. with xenosaga, that one really blew my mind. i remember pre ordering the first one and it came with big art book. regret losing it, it had some neat things in it. either way glad i was obsessed with collecting as much ps2 games as i could and grabbing most of these titles. my most expensive game is a sealed copy of silent hill 4, bought that for $10 now its worth $400.

As an RPG enthusiast, I must watch this video. ---- Shadow Hearts - I have played this, but I prefer the sequel of all 3 of the Shadow Hearts games (not counting the original Koudelka). ---- Monster Rancher 4 - Another great game. As a long-time fan of the series, I didn't hate what it did, I thoroughly enjoyed it. ---- Tsugunai Atonement - Yeah, I'm probably one of the people who also never heard of this, but it looks very good... and since this is a rare game, looks like I'll have to play it via emulation only. ---- Drakengard 2 - I don't remember playing the first one, definitely didn't play the sequel. That being said, the gameplay you showed looked okay, definitely worth a try. ---- Wild Arms 5 - Long time fan of this series as well, but I don't think I got this far. Bad timing with some stuff that was going on in my personal life. Definitely want to play it, though. Sadly, though, a concussion I suffered some years back will make me not recognize some of the cameos. ---- Steambot Chronicles - Oh man. This was a demo on one of those Playstation magazines, I think, and after the demo I absolutely HAD to have it. ---- Suikoden V - I'm aware of the series, but I think it never really got my attention. ---- Devil Summoner - Raidou Kunuzoha Vs The Soulless Army - I think pretty much every Shin Megami Tensei game is on my "I want to play" list. ---- Xenosaga Episode 3 - As someone who played the original episode and felt let down by Episode 2, I think this one slipped by me. ---- .hack//Quarantine - This is a bit of a sore spot for me... I had the first 4 games and they were stolen along with my PS2 at the time, as well as some other games. It also tied into the show by bringing the significant cast members from the show as NPCs you could build a relationship with and have them be party members... but only after you beat the final boss.

Xenosaga is just the best. I've never seen such an ambitious story attempted, and it just kills me that the reception wasn't what they hoped and that it hasn't been continued yet. Still hoping that one day it will, what with the commercial success of Xenoblade (which seems to have a less impactful story so far, though I've only played 80% of XC1)

I have most of those some more than one copy.. The Wild arms 5 was on clearance at fryes electronics they literally had like over 20+ copies so i picked up 3 it was the boxed edition with extra stuff in it.. got them at 19.99 each.. I love my xenosaga series i have all 3 of them for sure.. Also have monster rancher 4 two copies.. I cant believe how much people are asking for wild arms 5 given I thought there is a TON of copies out there like i said our local store had dozens of them in stock and had to be put on clearance again why i picked up 3..I still have 2 unopened. Then again thinking about it they had literally like 30-40 boxed Lunar 2 ps1 games on the shelf and like 20 lunar ones boxed... That store always had massive stock at the time back in the day

I still at least have my original copies of Drakengard 1 & 2 (and I have 3 for the ps3 out of principal but I don't think I ever tried it). I don't remember playing the second game much but I played the crap out of the first one. I remember one week back then I was basically sol cause my car was getting body work & paint done after it got hit, so I binged Drakengard while I had nothing to do/was on vacation. I completed every ending and did basically everything the game had to offer. Such a dark game, I love it. Bonus points that it spun the secret ending off into the Nier franchise. I also bought the first Xenosaga & I think the first two .Hack games brand new. I though Xenosaga sucked but the .Hack games kept me interested for awhile, since they reminded me of PSO a bit. It's a shame about Xenosaga since I loved Xenogears, but i just couldn't get into it. Unfortunately I traded those in back in the day... doubt I'll be owning them in my collection anytime soon with the way the market is now.

I remember back in the days of Hollywood Video / Gamecrazy, when I was a teenager and the friendly Gamecrazy employee struck up a conversation with me and recommended Shadow Hearts Covenant. I ended up falling in love with that game, and to this day, I hold up in very high regards in terms of story, character development, atmosphere, and gameplay. I ended up going back and playing the original Shadow Hearts and loved that too. It's an absolute crime that the series is effectively dead.

I never felt like Suikoden V was a return to form as I never felt Suikoden ever significantly dipped. Suikoden III and IV are still highly respected and it is just that they went for something different to the six person battle system that didn't age as well, but story wise and character wise, they were just as amazing as the rest in my opinion. All five main games have been very well received and sold decently well for a niche RPG series. Btw, I counted the seconds from the loading for battles a while back. Gensou Suikoden IV and V have roughly the same loading time for battles and I think that I even saw the second game have the same loading time, but I would have to double check. I think that it was the animation before the battles start for IV and V that gave it them the illusion of feeling longer.
@TimBitten
@TimBitten 2 жыл бұрын
Suikoden IV had a good plot but lazy, subpar character dialog. Otherwise, it’s a good game. I was at least able to tolerate it and beat it so I could say I’ve beaten all the Suikodens. But yeah, V is leaps and bounds better…if you ignore that ONE town with the horrible music. (You know the one…)
@zacharyessey5904
@zacharyessey5904 2 жыл бұрын
@@TimBitten It all comes down to opinion. I liked the character dialog for IV, but I felt as though the game was too short making it harder to get into certain characters who clearly needed more screen time. I didn't feel like V was leaps and bounds better though. For instance, I preferred the visuals from IV compared to V. The background visuals in V to me just didn't sell the world even though the character models looked great, but I enjoyed the places that I went to in IV. I wasn't really a fan of the villain for V. Both he and the villain for IV felt underdeveloped compared to the rest of the cast. I think that both were pretty average when it came to animations. I wasn't a fan of Frey as a protagonist, but I really enjoyed playing as Lazlo. I think that both had cool friends of the protagonist though I will say. I preferred the story of Snowe compared to Euram Barrows as well. What I did prefer about V was that it was longer allowing for more character development, I also prefer the 6 person battle system as well as the dueling from V, but they both had awesome major battles. V may edge it out on the major battles, but not by much. Outside of that, I don't prefer V in the other areas. I would give Suikoden V an 8.5/10 and IV an 8 because I think that both were great, but I think that V stepped things up a bit more in areas that did help with the polish slightly. If IV were 10-20 hours longer giving characters more time to develop and had the six person parties, I would rate it the same as V. The soundtracks for both games live up to the Gensou Suikoden reputation of being great; so I can't split them on that.
