Its not a rippoff at all,I use it quite a lot because my Office is nearby,you have to be careful and choose a set menu like Fried cod or haddock, chips, mushy peas, tartar & chip shop curry sauce or HP gravy and that's £22.50! to give you an idea a sandwich can cost that without a drink LOL

You are probably right. A visitor from overseas on holiday would not be able to tell the difference between a cheap fillet of fried fish and a good quality fillet of fried fish. it's a rip-off, tourists are being scammed everywhere.

@@knightsorder You cannot tell until you eat it, defrosted, cod looses not only flavour , but moist. I have been( now retired) in catering all my life, and would be able to tell if the cod had previously bee frozen. But of course you pay for the location as well as for the meal, with matching rents and rates. He also hs to pay 20% VAT, which is not allowed to showed on the bill, so £31 . minus 5 pounds VAT= to £25. A man came in to my cafe some years ago I was charging £1.50 for a cup of tea, his comment was: I can buy a bag of tea for a penny, OK I said. go and buy one bag of tea, if you can, buy a table and chair, pay the landlord and council for permission, buy sugar , milk, cup and saucer, tea spoon, produce some boiling water a waitress to serve you the cup of tea, and somewhere to wash the cup, and pay 20% VAT for the privilege, he said nothing.

As a fellow Londoner, no justification of those prices! I'm going Chez Fred just outside Bournemouth very soon. Inclusive lunch fish🐠 and chips, mushy peas, tea/coffee £12.95. IMO best f&c in UK.🐟

Mate it’s nothing special ! When we went there , I was itching to try it out! Going on about it! It’s literally the name and the hype ! I remember oily chips, soggy batter on chips and from what I remember was a lot more than £13 that’s for sure !

Darren, I'm right with you mate, I absolutely can't stand anyone being ripped off! Let's be honest that meal was worth half that at most! £30 for fish and chips and they sell you a small loaf to fill you up as the actual meal wasn't that big....don't care how good the cod was that's just taking the proverbial.

in a location like this I would expect to pay those type of prices here in Australia...Good Fish range from $7 to $18 .. Sourdough mini loaf... $7... Chips ..$5... 2 cups of Tea ... $ 12...

As a business owner it’s the way it is. Rent, rates, utilities, staff and product. May fair will be the most expensive place for businesses in the U.K.

But no excuses if you can't afford your rent then you should close shop or move somewhere cheaper No excuses for high prices for crap then put up prices to cover losses is not the way balence is key good food for good price and people will talk and come high prices and crap then it's time to close shop passion in what your selling is the foundations to any success this lot are lazy and don't care and over valuing there products so they don't have a future simply business it's only hard If you make it hard 🙂👍

London is finished. Decline is everywhere. Over 3500 pubs, bars and nightclubs have closed over the past 4 years. Running a business is no longer viable in the city.

Oh dear Darren, what a shame they have to do that! I love the Mayfair chippy quality, but that is not playing fair chippy. I went for the classic at Bicester village in Oxford and paid £17.99, with ample outdoor seating. Yes it's Mayfair but not fair. Thanks for the heads up and another valuable video. Much appreciated.

We don't charge tourists to go into museums, so we get them at places like this :-) But the overheads must be insane, and if they were too expensive, they'd be empty.

The problem is East London isn’t Mayfair. The overhead costs would be minimal by comparison. The fact is that though expensive, you said the place was very busy so I guess that tells the whole story.

First time ive seen DJ's stuff and it was enjoyable. Liked the way he had the thoughtfullness to think of others while inside the chip shop. Many others would have just talked throughout his meal, so yeah, i had no problem with the "talkover". I hate service charge; if you dont like paying service charge within your total invoice ask them to remove it, I'm almost sure theyre obliged to. Look forward to some more of DJ's stuff.

Well ripped off, don't forget you are paying Mayfair rent with your fish & chips, I'd avoid at all costs, calling it a 'chippy' makes it sound cheap, but the opposite is the case.

I hate over crowded and noisy eating places..and over priced food. The food did look excellent, but overpriced. Actually Poppie's is getting too pricey as well. (Camden). As a child I remember fish 'n chips in newspaper and walking along the road and everyone could smell the condiments..

Totally agree Darren. For that establishment to literally rip off their customers is disgraceful. I'm going to W1 with family in a few days and I will avoid that chippy like the plague. I see from the view count its up to 3,650. I guess that's 3,650 that won't be spending their hard earned money in that thiefdom.

An Aussie tuning-in here. That sort of price would ruin it for me. Also the lack of space & excessive noise (which often goes with small crowded places), would relegate this place as an eat and leave only. And for that kind of serious money I would like to enjoy my time there. Maybe lots of places in London are like this? I wonder. I thought your review was fair and balanced, and for the video. However 'would I go back' is the golden question I ask. Sounds, listening to you, like the fish & chips was a real winner. Thanks for the pointer to your previous video Lucas' Fish Bar East London. I'm about to go through your list and see if I can spot it. Lately here in Oz I've been getting around to a few fish & chip shops. But nothing as rowdy as Mayfair Chippy, thank goodness.

Fair point on pricing, but, bear in mind that just the rent on that unit would be in the region of £250k a year. Then rates (Mayfair rates), ultimately you're asking for trouble expecting a sit-down meal & Fish & Chips at anything under £30 a head in Mayfair. What I do think, is perhaps their take-away prices ought to be much cheaper - food for thought

What you should remember is the overheads, ie Rent Rates, Staff Costs etc in Mayfair will be astronomical...Someone has got to pay for it, so the costs fall onto the customer....

Doesn't excuse serving up small portions of garbage though does it. Factor in your overheads by all means but serve something that doesn't make the punter feel they've just been ripped off.

They do look nice here, and never eaten inside here but walked past it + a few of my friends have eaten inside- but have had stuff from here before via takeaway though so I got out the service charge aspect! That guy in the beige top looked like he had the right ump lol

I share your sound sense for money. The catchment of this "chippy" covers wealthy residents in Mayfair and adjacent West End as well as the City workers (after a quick pints after work) plus American tourists maybe, all presumably finding 31.44 for a fish tea not a thing to make a particular fuss about. In terms of taste, IMHO there can't be too big a difference between any chippies serving crisp fish & chips within one minute out of deep fryer. I fondly remember the days when fish & chips were wrapped by old newspaper somehow making it tastier.

Loads of places if not most places in America of you boxes to pack what you can’t eat, to take it home. Us Brits don’t seem to do it here, I totally agree with you, but it’s strange because I would feel strange here in the U.K. asking for a box or even taking it out. It’s also similar when Complaining about our food if it not good enough or cooked right we feel strange if we complain, Wow Americans don’t. If their food is not 100% Perfect they will send it back. We just except lots of crap, and as for lots of food up in the High Peak Wow take out food is Crap at most places, but obviously not all.

The fish served at our local chip shop boasts a thickness double that and extends an additional half in length. However, its preparation seemed questionable, not cooked, as it appeared to have consumed a significant portion of the chips. Speaking of which, the chips themselves were so devoid of moisture, one might mistake them for having been baked in an oven.

I live in Swakopmund in Namibia. At the yellow caravan down at our beachfront, one pays for the exact piece of fresh fish as pitured in your video, incl chips with tartar sauce only 3GBP. A béer in a good restaurant costs about 1 GBP. We live in the best country in the world.

Not even a tourist trap! You people have to remember this is in the most expensive area of the UK ! It’s not just some random place you go and have a lunch ! A tiny studio flat, basically a tiny room with a kitchen you could probably boil a kettle and make some toast and the smallest toilet and shower sold her for over £1,000,000 ! You will get the same prices as a joint in south london ? 😂 I personally wouldn’t go myself, only went there when company card was paying when working in that area ! But people who don’t know london have no clue what this area is ! Literally all around the chippy are houses of members or Arab ruling families who are worth billions, Russian, Europeans. The rich or the rich! It’s literally a different planet

As an aussie where I grew up the "fish" and chips were always battered flake (shark) and came wrapped up with the chips in butchers paper and the requisite surprise dim sim or spud cake hidden amongst the chips. It occurred to me when i was watching this, that the perfect fish and chips is always the most nostalgic one. Cod is lovely but I'll take crispy gummy shark any day because it tastes like childhood happiness.

Rock cod known as ling possibly or monk fish ,blue eyed cod would be that thick .looks so good . But they're trying to look up scale .i would expect it to be fresh fish not been frozen and hand battered. Chips also made by hand . If it is chips from a supplier and frozen fish cuts i would be anoyed on price and and quantity myself. Loved this vlog darren . You explained it all with the two words "It's Mayfair". I live next door to a good fish and chip shop and although prices have gone up recently due to the increased fuel costs. it is not even half that price. Their cod is twice that size with rich bubbly batter. I'm sure it wasn't but that batter looked almost exactly like the frozen ones you buy from the supermarket and they are very similar in size. Was the price of that breakfast tea bag at over £4 got me. They kidding?!?!

I've had bigger fish fingers! The chippy at the end of my road charges £6.40 for fish and chips a mushy peas/curry sauce. The fish is cooked to order and I've never finished a portion of chips, they're so big.
