"The Most Famous Steam Locomotive In The World" is a title that is thrown about quite a lot, especially where standard gauge locomotives are concerned. But what would be the most famous narrow gauge locomotive in the world? Through appearances in Thomas The Tank Engine, a German excursion and even replicas exported to Japan, today we will take a look at the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway's No.10 'Northern Rock'!

Nice video, glad to see Rock getting the recognition it deserves (I may be slightly biased...) Just one point, Rock's visit to Dresden Parkeisbahn was in 1998 not 94 and it did manage to run, just only round half the track. By using a turning triangle it was able to double head trains out of the main Zoo station, round the larger half of the track back to the zoo where it stopped short of the platform, reversed round the triangle and onto the front of the next train.

See, like everyone else in the comments, I’ve would have said No.1 or No.2 (Talyllyn or Dolgoch) on the Talyllyn Railway. However, you do bring a new light on the Ravenglass and Eskdale. It’s nice to see Northern Rock get the spotlight for once. Nice to see that it wasn’t just the new build or even a Thomas story that got it famous, but rather Roller coaster Tycoon 2. Great video mate! You just gained another subscriber!

This was an excellent video! I honestly never realized that there was this much on Northern Rock, and you certainly make an excellent argument! Personally, however, I’d argue that the most famous narrow gauge locomotives would fall to the D&RGW Mikados, specifically the K-36. Their use on one of the most famous narrow gauge railroads in the world (not to mention, the largest narrow gauge network ever built), and locomotive #484’s inclusion in the third Indiana Jones film, I think, makes for an intriguing counter-argument.

I think Northern Rock is an engine that's very overlooked by many Thomas fans, but to me it's a very special locomotive as I've been to the railway she runs on today.

May I add that Northern Rock (although in 2D form) can also be considered a movie star since it was featured in the 1982 animated movie The Plague Dogs

For minimum gauge, I'd agree, but there's tons of way more well known narrow gauge trains. Tal-y-llyn (who also appears in Thomas), Puffing Billy NA class in Australia (which I think holds the record for NG steam tourist railway patronage at 513k), the Darjeeling B class in India, the Ffestiniog's Double Fairlie or the NGG class Garrett that PBR and WHR imported maybe even. Most of those have been in TV shows too, especially PBR. Also it's kind of cheating, but even though Japan's trains are physically larger than standard gauge trains in England, most of them run on narrow cape gauge. So something like the E235 series that runs on the Yamanote in Tokyo would easily win. For steam, there's a surprisingly large amount of restored locomotives there, but it'd be between the D51 200 or 498 (also has tons of export models), 58654 from the 8620 class (appears in the anime Kimetsu no Yaiba) and C62 class (starring in the manga and anime Galaxy Express 999).

I'd still have to say it's either the Talyllyn originals, or possibly the mikados of the colorado narrow gauge. A third part of me still would like to think it's WW&F Ry #9, but our favorite little forney, though having a long road back to steam, I don't think is quite as famous

I was half tempted to say 'oh yes, of course its dolgoch' but the fact Northern Rock is in Video games, Thomas, made a visit to germany, has a japanese cousin and a role in the animated film 'The Plague Dogs' it probably edges it out. Not the one i would expect but certainly makes sense.z

The RER & RHDR are actually 15 inch railways, which are classed as Miniature Gauge, not Narrow Gauge.

They are classed as minimum gauge, which would still make them narrow gauge and not miniatures of real prototypes. The name "minimum gauge" comes from Arthur Heywood, who was the person who advocated for the use of 15" gauge railways for estates, and it would then go on to see use in industry. Heywood calls it "minimum" and not "miniature" because 15" would be the minimum gauge to which a railway could be built and still serve a practical use. He describes the theory in his book, simply titled 'Minimum Gauge Railways', which is free to read online. I have added the book to the sources down in the description.

How do you define narrow gauge? If anything smaller than standard gauge is narrow gauge, then I argue the Japanese D51s and C62s running on 1067 mm gauge are the most famous narrow gauge engines in the world. They appear in much more media than Northern Rock. 🤣

Seems a moot point either way; not only is the gauge still 15", and thus narrow gauge (see: smaller than standard gauge), 'Northern Rock' is not a scale locomotive. She is not the real thing sized down, but a real thing which just so happens to be small. ... Kind of like me, actually.

I watch too much of the little blue train? 'Coz I associate 15inch with the name, miniature guage. Why did I do this??? (Edit: well it's not really miniature, but it's more with minimum. Minimum enough for a real railway?)

The engine you yourself describe is apparently so important to you, you didn't even bother to learn her name. You're making a grand case for your arguments, I must say. The fact you're British, judging by the engines you listed, does not mean the world of railways is Anglo-centric. Talyllyn might have been the first engine on the first British preserved railway, but that doesn't mean she has achieved all that much other than having a counterpart in Thomas.

In case of well khowned its talyliyn but in most worked its probably the engines on the Romney hiyth and dimchurch railway it's just my option as a railway enthusiasts its truly up to the people of the world to say sorry if I offend you
