Love my M5 stuff. Great form factor with an ESP32, a screen, and all sorts of other bits. Great vid.

The best part is the price! I can source the non plus version, which has a slightly smaller screen and battery, and no buzzer for $11 from Digikey! Cheap enough to be disposable. I am using them in my robotics classes since they can be programmed from a chromebook. They've been a godsend for remote and hybrid school technology classes (at least for me). The plus is $13, but stock is limited now so I'll have to wait for next year.

I'm glad you have. These things are awesome for prototyping and projects. What are you planning to do with it?

I bought one for myself, and have been experimenting with it. Overall, a great value and very capable microcontroller + display + sensors. However, it does have a number of flaws (according to sources I've been checking online). (1) The battery never completely turns off, it goes into deep sleep instead, and depletes constantly, i.e. one day it'll die (probably sooner than you'd want). (2) The device isn't 5V-safe for sensors/external electronics that you connect to it. (3) It uses up a lot of the I/O on the internal modules, and so there are less pins available for your own external electronics. [I know you can connect multiple devices in series using I2C, but that means paying for a bunch of I2C kit rather than simpler, cheaper sensors.] (4) Being fairly new to the market, the amount of example code is limited (time of writing: Feb 2021) so it isn't as easy to work with as a more established MCU.

Perhaps the battery is handled by the interrupt rather than hardware cycle. Could you expand on the 5V safe part? As per support, don't forget that this is ESP32 so most of the projects out there would be compatible, especially that the built-in components are listed with model numbers and you can source the libraries for it.

I'm not an expert, just reading other people's comments, e.g. on Tinkerfarm website, on the m5stack community - Web searching for "M5stickC 5V safe" brings up some material I've seen.

Yes, it's a lovely little unit - late to the party I'm testing it right now over at my blog - that spectrum viewer is lovely. About the only thing that concerns me right now is - it gets quite warm so I'm not entirely sure it'll do 2 hours on battery.

I got an M5StickC-Plus based on your video (thank you, cool device!) and spent far too much time trying to get into the menu. I don't believe you mentioned that it wasn't running the stock firmware (or if you did I missed it). In any event, you might mention that (and provide a pointer to the code if available).

Its very good value for its price but most of us who will watch this video, the user groups most likely will find it very limiting, I would suggest people get the m5stack core2. It would be good for people who have been to microbit and other esp boards but not comfortable to handle too many pins and complicity like esp32 dev or m5stack.
