Most Horrifying Piano Music - Liszt "Der Doppelgänger"
Franz Schubert / Franz Liszt "Der Doppelgänger" from the Schwanengesang
Still ist die Nacht, es ruhen die Gassen,
In diesem Hause wohnte mein Schatz;
Sie hat schon längst die Stadt verlassen,
Doch steht noch das Haus auf demselben Platz.
Da steht auch ein Mensch und starrt in die Höhe,
Und ringt die Hände, vor Schmerzensgewalt;
Mir graust es, wenn ich sein Antlitz sehe, -
Der Mond zeigt mir meine eigne Gestalt.
Du Doppelgänger! du bleicher Geselle!
Was äffst du nach mein Liebesleid,
Das mich gequält auf dieser Stelle,
So manche Nacht, in alter Zeit?
Heinrich Heine's Buch der Lieder (1827)

Doppelgänger means “double walker” in German. Old legends from the country tell of an eerie phenomenon where a person who is about to die will see an exact replica of themselves from a distance away of perhaps behind a wall or shop window. Their identical reflection would often in the legends be scowling or sneering. In some legends the Doppelgänger will proceed to stalk its victim for an undetermined period of time from afar until their living self perished, often from illness, tragic accidents, or being murdered at the hands of people they pissed off earlier in the story, spurred on by the sinister magic of the Doppelgänger. In this way the Doppelgänger was a symbol of the inescapable clutches of death and fate.

this feels like a piece on losing a loved one. there are moments when the tone lifts a bit which makes me feel like the composer was thinking about happy memories with this person. then, it fades into utter sadness and helplessness, the feeling that they cant make anymore memories together. then the part where the pace picks up and becomes incredibly intimidating, anger and fear, the feelings they get when a loved one is snatched away from them. and then.....it drifts back into the bitter sweet sound.

I’ve sung this piece before- you’re very close in the interpretation. The story follows the speaker as he is walking through a town he used to live in with his now lost loved one. Eventually he finds himself in front of his old house he used to live in with his love. In the climax of the piece, he sees his doppelgänger in the window, seemingly taunting him. In anguish the speaker asks the doppelgänger why he taunts him with these memories as he remembers back to the times he had with his love which are now long gone. It is a very interesting piece of lied

This is such a beautiful piece. About halfway through though I started crying because it reminded me of my little sister. I love her and she’s incredibly sweet, but she has anger issues. @@yoshiya919 The whole piece, especially the middle, is supposed to be rage filled. The poem it has accompanying it is a man rageful at the fact a doppelganger (A sign of bad luck, and death) is in the form of his deceased wife on the exact day he lost her. So it's not a far fetch to get reminded of anger when the whole song is Anger and Sorrowful

This will never ever be horrifying, its one big masterpiece, its beatifull, its peacefull to hear and also calming to a certain point. Also if you deeply try to get a meaning out of it you can go through a rollercoaster of emotions.

It actually makes sense to call this piece scary, unlike the fury of the Queen of Night's aria or the prosaic, academic B-horror Tocatta and Fugue in D minor. This is the more cosmic type of horror embodied in Scriabin's Sixth Sonata or Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.
