When I read the synopsis for The Raven Boys, I thought it was going to be a light paranormal romance. But, as it turns out, the only book in that series with a significant amount of romantic emphasis is The Raven King. Even though it wasn't what I expected, it's now my favorite series and I love it so much.

The synopsis for *Throne of Glass* really threw me off. It's not necessarily that it isn't true, but the synopsis focused on the competition and how it is the only way to gain her freedom. The the book completely glosses over that aspect. Also, to be honest the protagonist did not behave like she ha just been in a death camp, and didn't even seem physically effected by the camp. She just was called 'painfully thin' and was slightly less fit that she was before, but still more fit than the average person. Sorry if that was a bit ranty it's just that I was expecting a high stakes fight for your life type of book, not day to day antics at the castle with puppies, candy, and flirting. I do feel like the rest of the series fit the tone of the synopsis a bit more though.

I agree to a point too. Although I think she had help in the camp and since she was in an incredible form before going there and tried to keep it whilst there, it sort of makes sense. But the romance overshadowed action and it WAS disappointing. However she did write this when she was 16 and people say it gets better so I'll continue to find out! 😂🙈🙏🏻

The book that comes to my mind immediately when I think of misleading synopsises is The Raven Boys. I hesitated picking it up for the longest time because it sounded like your typical boring paranormal romance to me and that is not at all a genre I am a fan of. But then I read it and it was so much more than the synopsis made it out to be and I fell in love with the series right away. :') Also heck yes I would love more pirate books! I'm actually working on a book that involves pirates and while it's still in the very early stages of planning I hope I can write it one day. I need more pirates :T

The Raven Boys. It is far greater than it's synopsis. I wouldn't have picked it up if it didn't have glowing recommendations from literally everyone. I'm not here for paranormal romance. Magical realism mystery thriller? Sign me the heck up.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer had a pretty misleading synopsis. It's not that what they stated wasn't true, but that book was much more than just another romance, and in my opinion, way better than Twilight.

For me it's "I'll Give You the Sun." I'm not a contemporary person, but I expected romance and fluff with family drama in the background. What I got was the most accurate depiction of heartbreak and sibling dynamics.

The raven Boys put me off because I saw girl sixteen kisses true love she'll die so I was like nope until I was convinced to pick it up and realised it was so m u ch more then that and loved it. Like a lot of people who went into it based on the blurb, The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet was really not what I was expecting plot wise. I also just read The Thing Itself by Adam Roberts, which markets itself as being like "The Thing" at the south pole, with two characters and maybe aliens. In reality, it's weird time-spanning, philosophy-heavy speculative fiction with many different perspectives. Not what I was expecting, but much more interesting, if disturbing in parts.

In kind of a combination of Obsidian and Black Hearts, I felt the same way about Passenger. I was waiting for the time travel FOREVER, but it didn't come into play until the last 75%ish. I also thought it would have swashbuckling Pirates. Nope. Definitely more a historical romance with a dash of time traveling. Super bummed about that one still ☹️️.

I'm so glad, I read Obsidian (First Lux book) in german, because the synopsis does not reveal that fact! It just talk about her moving and being a book blogger and having this neighbor who is rude and strange. IT sounded interesting. And I hadn't heard anyone talking about it before, so I didn't know it while reading. I'm so glad. And then I was at the bookstore with a friend of mine and wanted to show her this book and someone working there came up and told her it's about aliens and I was just: Nooooo, don't do that! That's a massive spoiler! (Also the covers are way more beautiful)

TBH, I will never get past how much "The Madman's Daughter" pissed me off in this regard. The back cover promised me a dark adventure story where a girl goes to track down her morally grey/possibly insane mad scientist father and I thought we'd be seeing this really complex and twisted relationship between them... and what I got was a friggin' love triangle. And it was PAINFULLY obvious who she'd pick, which made it even more annoying because I liked the other guy better. What especially sucked was that I actually really did dig the character of her father once we met him, but he was barely in it. The entire time I'd be getting these lovey-dovey scenes I'd be like, "GO. BACK. TO. THE. MAD. SCIENTIST."

Two books come to mind here: Northanger Abbey puts the focus in the synopsis on stuff that doesn't happen until towards the end of the book, as if that is the main plot. I spent large parts of the book waiting for 'the plot' to happen. Truismes by Marie Darrieussecq is possibly the weirdest book I've ever read (I'm not sure if it was good weird or bad weird, but I enjoyed the ride, despite there being too many gross or sexual parts for my taste). I had to read it for a French class and went into it completely blind, reading the original French with a completely white cover, no synopsis, and not knowing what the title meant. The book starts with a woman whose body is changing: at first it seems obvious what is going on, but then it gets weirder. I've seen pictures of the English version and I am so annoyed. Not only do some version of the summary spoil this part of the story, but the TITLE and the TITLE PAGE spoil it too! Just... don't read this book in English?

It tells you the thing about the "game" that you don't actually learn concretely in the book until the characters figure it out way towards the end. (not sure if the synopsis is different for different editions...) There are a lot of hints earlier, but it was a little weird for me already knowing what was up... It also heavily plays up the romance, which doesn't emerge until fairly late in the book, and I think I would have enjoyed the reading experience more if I hadn't been so explicitly waiting for it. But it IS a really beautifully written synopsis, so there's that.

The synopsis of The Raven Boys is very misleading because it makes it seem like the story is all about Blue's curse when it's really not. And I think that synopsis drives a lot of people away because it sounds like a cheesy, cliched YA novel. And it's about so much more than that. The synopsis doesn't do the story justice at all. This is kind of the opposite with the direction you went in this video, but is still a very notable example, I think.

This Norwegian murder mystery/crime/thriller book called The Gospel of Lucifer by Tom Egeland, the synopsis made me believe it would be a The da Vinci Code-style book about satanist cults and an adventure around Europe trying to find the Gospel og Lucifer, but it turned out to be a book about ancient aliens (and the whole Jesus was an alien-thing) written by a guy who CLEARLY had strong mommy and/or girlfriend-issues because the main guy got 'friendzoned' a lot and was so angry that no woman wanted to fuck him and also his mum abandoned him, so poor him the bad bad women didn't want him. jesus i hated that book.

If you want to talk about misleading (well misleading in that it doesn't happen until the end) you should watch a kdrama. Those will give you teaser clip for the next episode and usually the most dramatic part of the teaser doesn't happen until the very end of the episode. And these are usually hour or more long episodes which does not include commercials. Though it is usually worth it if it is a good kdrama.

For me, Me Before You IS romantic. It´s just much more subtle than an average Hollywood romance, and the romantic element is just one part of it, not the whole story. It´s very obviously written by a Brit, and I wouldn´t have it any other way.

I've read other British romances and prefer those to Me Before You. Me Before You is less of a romance and more what publishing categorizes as "chick lit" or "women's fiction", which I hate those terms but that genre is more in line with Me Before You.

Biggest one for me, and no, I didn't dislike it, was The Rest of Us Just Live Here. I was expecting something more like the Mystery Men and that's not at all what this was. Maybe it was a little bit in part because of youtube...people were playing it up as being hilarious and sure, it's funny here and there but it's more sad and realistic than ha ha laugh out loud funny. I really wanted a high of school for superheroes, with your classics Superman, Spiderman, etc as the popular kids or something...I can definitely see a brooding teenage Batman; and then your misfit other kids with weird, quirky superpowers. I can brew the perfect cup of tea every time, throwing spoons, the Bowler, weird things like that. Maybe, just maybe, someday I'll do nanowrimo, and this will be my topic!
