I'm a bit surprised by the 6 points - not had that combination of FPN for £100 and 6 penalty points together. I guess that also it's not a good idea to wear a company sweater with your company name on when driving like this.

True, although I do enjoy when Mike sorts them out. We get to see the infraction and the justice when Mike gets them to go back, to add to their shame and the subsequent punishment. These people are almost like rodents and traps - they sense it's dangerous, they know it's dangerous, and yet some, if not most, of them are too tempted, after weighting up the odds, to resist. And get caught.

I have several suggestions for this corner that the authorities could implement (given that cameras are not wanted due to this being a "heritage site") & greatly reduce the issue of wrong way drivers: 1. Solid double white lines all the way down the centre and going back some way further than the longest queue that would ever form. This would still leave it open for emergency vehicles. Any driver pulling out of line to overtake the waiting queue would immediately be committing an offence, long before they even reached the traffic island. 2. As part of #1 above, have the cross hatchings around the traffic island changed so that they are bounded by continuous white lines rather than the existing dotted ones. 3. Have two very clear No Entry signs at the traffic island for the right hand side of the road: One sign on the island itself (mounted on the existing light pole) and another on the right hand side pavement. This would compliment the existing Keep Left bollard. To avoid confusion and make it clear that the No Entry signs apply only to the right hand side of the road, have arrows underneath No Entry - the one on the left pointing downwards to the right and the one on the right pointing downwards to the left. This would make it even clearer that the No Entry applies only to the bit of roadway between the two signs and arrows. 4. Repeater signs along that whole approach to the effect of "Illegal to cross solid lines, Min penalty £x & x points". 5. Similar warning signs on the same poles as the No Entry signs mentioned in Point #3 that read "Min penalty for ignoring No Entry £x & x points". 6. Underneath the signs warning of the minimum penalties and on the same pole, have signs with those symbols of "Safety cameras ahead". My understanding is that local authorities can and do put up such signs even when no safety cameras are actually present. In fact, I know of several places where that is indeed the case. Besides, we DO have safety cameras - Mikey's! 7. A permanent lifelike "Cardboard Cop", secured either to the traffic island (there's enough room beside the Keep Left bollard) or on the pavement (again, secured & in a way that doesn't block access for pedestrians). Yes I am totally serious. This has been used to great effect in other areas and can look very lifelike, making drivers be more on their guard, even if they know it's not actually a real police officer. 8. A rethink of this whole business of "Heritage site, hence no cameras". Peoples lives and safety is at stake here. What's more important? This corner has been a very long ongoing issue and as fabulous a job that Mikey is doing, he's not always going to be there. What happens if he changes jobs, moves to another area, goes away on holiday etc? Even as it is, he's not there 24x7 and I suspect what we are seeing is the tip of the iceberg. The police aren't always going to be there either. I am convinced that if all of the above measures were in place, far fewer drivers would attempt this wrong way manouvre. Any driver ignoring all the above additional measures could potentially face additional penalties that are currently being handed out, since they would also be contravening the solid double white lines and No Entry signs. And they could not argue at all that they weren't given fair warning. It would also give Mikey (and others) an even stronger position when stopping such drivers, pointing out all the extra signs and double white lines.

I was thinking, the road further back is incredibly wide, it has about 2.5 lanes of width and 2 lanes dedicated to parking as well. The parking could be moved to a central strip along the road, and a full width (~2.5m) bidirectional cycle lane (partially separated from the road with kerbing, but in places allowing emergency services access to use it) placed along to replace one of the parking areas at the side of the road. Use parked cars to create the barrier between opposing lanes of traffic.

Well you have to realise that European cities are thousands of years old. The roads weren't designed for cars. Take a city Like New York for example. Everything is a grid, that's because new York is such a young city. Still has horrendous traffic I believe. But cities like london, Dublin, Paris etc were not built with cars in mind. That's why european roads are small. They were designed for horses and peds

@@svenskallaru9466 the road layout here was constructed in the early nineteenth century for horse drawn carriages in mind. This is Regents Park and was laid out by the order of the Prince Regent who later became King George IV. This park and the roads are not public property. They belong to the Crown Estate and are ultimately answerable to Her Majesty The Queen. Other important parts of London which belong to the Crown are Regent Street and Bond Street. The Strand and the Savoy Hotel are even more in control of the Sovereign as they are part of the Duchy of Lancaster, of which the Queen is Duke. @donvanvliet9477

My experience is that they would get exactly the same but with an exception. In a lot of the cases you see the driver challenging Mikey and being provacative by still trying to drive round the corner. This clearly aggravates the offence and if it was in court this would likely increase the penalty. This case is an example of such behaviour. If Mikey had not stopped them they would probably only get the minimum penalty, subject to other circumstances being the same.

Given how widespread and ongoing this "wrong way drivers" issue has been at this corner, I'm wondering if it's time at the very least for the authorities to blank out the "Look Left" / "Look Right" that's painted either side of the road there. It encourages pedestrians to only check for traffic coming the correct way and although not normally an issue in other places, it's very dangerous at that corner, given not only the number of drivers coming the wrong way but cyclists too. I have to say, as a pedestrian (and car driver) I always look both ways regardless of the correct flow of traffic or whether it's even a one way street. Either way, great job if standing your ground Mikey and shame in the cyclist who suggested you let the driver go. Don't they care for their own safety?

I think those messages are dangerous at every single crossing. Traffic could always be coming from both directions, whether legally (say, a police car in a chase or some roadworks/contraflow) or not. I don't see what purpose they serve at all. Just "LOOK" or "LOOK BOTH WAYS" would be fine if people need that reminder.
@ibs5080
@ibs5080 3 жыл бұрын
@cookiemonster I remember this being suggested by another subscriber recently and the response was along the lines that this would necessitate removing the central island to facilitate the extra turn lane. And the issue with that is that it would ironically make it more dangerous for crossing pedestrians. One solution to that is to incorporate a phase in such traffic lights that would be for crossing pedestrians (and perhaps cyclists) only but not sure how well that would work.

The lady told him it was illegal too. But then the one biker stops and asks you what your doing and let him go. Let him go where? There were cars waiting to go in that direction. There was no way you could let the idiot go. He was also aggressive, so the fine should have been $1,000. The 6 points and $100 probably wasn’t enough to teach him a lesson.

I reckon I understand the frustration of the motorist stuck in a line that doesn't concern his route, while they see the road they want to turn into, it's there, they can almost touch it, so it is very tempting to do what they do! I mean, maybe after a couple of days being stuck at the same place, seeing that there is rarely someting on the other side, I might cautiously try that. But at the same time, if Gandalf showed up, I would just accept the defeat, because I would know that I did something stupid.

I don't see why, on the approach to the island, the chevroned area isn't bordered by solid white lines to indicate no entry except in emergency? It wouldn't stop those determined to queue-jump/break the law but it might be a stronger reminder of what they shouldn't be doing. I'm sure broken lines lead drivers to think they have some leeway.
