Hi, I am not as familiar with boy groups to make an opinionated video like this. But I can list the top groups of each period. H.O.T. and Sechskies ruled the late 1990s. god ruled the early-mid 2000s. TVXQ was also popular during the mid-late 2000s. BIGBANG ruled the late 2000s-mid 2010s with EXO also being popular in the mid 2010s. BTS has been the most popular since the late 2010s.

I am not super familiar with boy groups enough to make an opinionated video like this sorry! But according to Korean popularity, BIGBANG was insanely popular. They were undoubtedly #1 in 2007-2012 and 2015. EXO was extremely popular and I would consider them #1 in 2013-2014, and 2016. BTS took the throne in 2017 and still has it.

That is a good idea but really difficult to do! Unlike girl groups who are more easily ranked, soloists are harder. The biggest problem is that not all soloists are kpop, and comparing them can be difficult. In my opinion, the most popular female soloists in the late 1990s were Uhm Junghwa and Kim Hyunjung. In the early 2000s, Lee Junghyun, Park Jiyoon, and Jang Nara were also popular. In the early-mid 2000s, Lee Hyori and BoA were very popular. Lee Hyori continued into the early 2010s. IU has become the most popular female soloist since the early 2010s. Ailee and Lee Hi were popular throughout the 2010s. Taeyeon is also very popular. These are all kpop soloists. Other singers like Baek Jiyoung, Lee Sooyoung, Jang Yoonjung, and Younha are all very popular but they are not really kpop (although Baek Jiyoung’s most famous song is kpop). This is why a soloist video is very difficult to do so I won’t be making one. I’m sorry!

I decided not to include IZ*ONE in 2021 for this video because they disbanded that year, same reason why GFRIEND was not included. I reduced the spots from 12 to 10 so the two disbanded groups got removed. SISTAR also disbanded in 2017 but I still included them because it was a mid-year disbandment and Lonely was a decent hit. As for the song, there’s no specific reason. I just pick songs that I think represent the group the best during that year. Either song works although M&M was more popular in Korea than ICSM.

You make very good points for AOA. All of that is true. AOA did better than Girl’s Day in 2015 in every category. Although they did have Hyeri with Reply 1988. I think I put GsD higher because they were more popular during the first half of 2015 and entered that year as one of the trendiest girl groups. Ring My Bell slightly underperformed and then there was that attitude scandal. As for Apink, I do think they are definitely higher than AOA. 2015 is considered Apink’s peak in popularity and they were considered an SNSD rival at that time. SISTAR’s weak physical sales can be excused as they are the only girl group to be a top group with a weak fandom. They are super strong in every other category (digitals, public recognition, individual member popularity).

It was a big hit but 2022 was dominated by the 4th gen girl groups. Red Velvet’s peak in Korea was 2017-2020 when they were considered a top 3 girl group. It’s a similar situation with Wonder Girls in 2016. Why So Lonely was a big hit, especially as a senior girl group. But 2016 was dominated by 3rd gen girl groups.

Gfriend is included six times (2015-2020). As for Viviz, Maniac is their first real hit song in Korea and that came out this year. Viviz isn’t as popular as Gfriend but it looks like Maniac is making them more popular.

They are known internationally, but not that popular domestically.

Digitals is just one metric, and there are other metrics to consider such as physical sales, public recognition, and clout. Twice has the clout and public recognition of being a number one girl group for four years (2016-2019). That alone is much greater than anything ITZY or STAYC have. Yes they were doing really poorly digitally in 2023. But the group Twice is still more popular than those groups. LSF and aespa have similar digital performance. Yes Perfect Night did better than Drama. But Drama was #2 for several weeks so the difference wasn’t massive. aespa has more physical sales, and more importantly, more public recognition. LSF is very popular, but they have the lowest public recognition of the main 5 girl groups which is why they are the least popular (by a small margin). Of course, they are still super popular! The top 5 girl groups of the 4th gen are all doing amazing and the gap is super small. There is a much bigger gap between LE SSERAFIM (#6) and TWICE (#7) than LSF and aespa (#5). But for aespa, i honestly still think LSF is more popular considering that their physical sales mainly comes from China. And that is another reason why i don't think physical sales are a good metric since global sales are also counted in circle/hanteo, but the whole top is really good, you consider a lot of things, respect for finding information about old groups that must be hard

@@joohwangieorangefishie To be fair, KSPO is pretty hard to sell out as a girl group, especially one that is no longer trendy in Korea like Twice. Only eight girl groups (Fin.K.L, S.E.S, KARA, SNSD, 2NE1, RV, TWICE, BP) have performed a solo concert there. Yeah you make good points with aespa. I think aespa has a small leg up from their 2021 popularity, fandom size, and Karina/Winter. I think another factor is that aespa did much better digitally in 2023 than 2022 so it shows they’re still popular. If aespa continued digitally from their 2022 performance, I would have put them below LSFM. Thank you! Yeah but I’m a huge girl group fan so it was pretty fun to make the video. We’ve been in a golden age of girl groups since 2022. It hasn’t been this good since 2009-2012. The fact that a group as popular as LE SSERAFIM can be only ranked #5 or #6 shows how good the current girl group industry is.

Yeah the 2nd gen groups (and AOA/EXID) were still on top during 2015. The 3rd gen groups were all rising and most of them had hits (Mamamoo, Red Velvet, Gfriend, Twice, even Lovelyz with Ah-Choo) but their popularity was still below the senior groups. It wasn’t until 2016 that the 3rd gen groups dominated led by Twice and Gfriend.

SISTAR is very highly ranked though? They were a rising group in 2011 and their main rival was Secret. They became super popular and trendy in 2012 and was only behind the top 5 of 2nd gen. By 2013, they became a top group at #3. It wasn’t until 2016 that their popularity declined because of the rise of 3rd gen. Even then, they had a good rank in the middle. I am confused by your question. SISTAR is ranked very high in this video and they were super popular. It doesn’t make any sense to rank them even higher.

@soneparadise2007 SISTAR in 2011 already had one of the biggest hit that year + a extremely successful sub unit aka SISTAR19. In 2012 they were already Top 3, if not #1 for that year since SNSD didn't even made a cb + the decline of Tara. No idea why you put KARA above them. SISTAR literally started a entire new trend in that year, ended with 2 songs on the top 3 yearly chart.

SNSD and 2NE1 are self-explanatory. Even without a comeback in Korea, SNSD was always the most popular in that country. T-ARA had a big fall but they were legitimately the 2nd most girl group for the first half of the year. KARA and WG’s popularity was declining by this point. You make a good argument, SISTAR could also be #4 for 2012. I put KARA and WG higher because they were coasting as top girl groups for years and were seen as these big, senior girl groups with clout. I like SISTAR a lot and have many of their albums. I did not purposefully put them lower than what they deserve. I strongly believe in my opinion that they were a rising group until 2013 which is why they weren’t top 3 until then. A strong digital seller yes. But not top 3 in popularity overall.

@@soneparadise2007 They were a rising gg in 2010-2011 only. You giving them a rising gg tittle up to 2012-2013 is insane. They were definitely top 2/3 in 2012 already, just check the Gallup Poll for these years, even in 2011 they were appearing already.

SISTAR is definitely really popular, but the highest I would rank them in 2012 is #4. They were definitely below SNSD, T-ARA, and 2NE1. Yes I know they were ranked high on Gallup in 2012. They appeared in 2011’s Gallup Poll with their song So Cool, not the group.

In 2023, they are now the most popular girl group in Korea. They dominated last year with so many hit songs and the group is super popular! Internationally BP is still #1, but NJ (and IVE) were more popular in 2023 in Korea.
