Review and small test drive of The most popular Track car around Nürburgring Nordschleife - BMW E36 325i. A true legend back from 1995, It was really modern car back in the days, but even 30 years later - still one of the most wanted BMW between Petrol heads. Ringtool score: 18/25
This E36 is for sale! Contact me for more info.

BMW E36 325i is an older type of the track car - still without stability controls or any other assistances apart slow, but still working ABS system. Because it is so Pure - driving emotions are always at the maximum limit as racing it will never get boring!
Engine
This model in the Review is actually a 323i version with M52B25 engine, but converted to have same power as original 325i by switching to old type of intake manifold. Big benefit of this modification - lighter engine block because of Aluminium alloy rather then cast iron.
Suspension and brakes:
BC coilovers - rear spring comes together with rear shock absorber, but top mounts must be reinforced. Rear subframe cracking mounts are strengthened by welding roll cage together with them. Brakes system is original from 323i, which means both front and rear discs are ventilated with HAWK DTC-60 brake pads.
Interior:
FIA rollcage, Sparco bucket seats, 6 point Schroth harness, Group A short shifter, carbon fiber door panels, OMP extinguisher and other safety features.

The E36 is an incredible machine when comsidering the price. Now they are on the rise but a few years ago 328i could be bought for less than 2 grand. The chassis is like a race car spec which is amazing for a 'family' car

Owned a 1992 E36 325i coupe here in Australia for 4 years. Had an LSD. All I did was upgrade all the bushes, new brakes and pads and Bridgestone S001 tyres and it was a joy to drive. Not that fast in a straight line but through the corners it could put the power down beautifully. And that engine note!

I had a few e36, including 328i tracktoll and M3, they are great cars when modified, only drawback is that they don't have a very exciting playful chassis, because of long wheelbase/engine placement. They drive like on rails with a predictable understeer over the limit. Best aftermarket support of any bmw and the biggest community with insane amount of DIY's and knowledge. They are getting old, expensive and rare.. I still recommend them above any other bmw for track driving.

Got my 328i 20 years ago for only 4K, full m50 intake and chip and it was on 220bhp lightened to 1200kg, all STREET LEGAL... it flied. E36 were designed as racing machines, even the 318iS E36 came with a reinforced engine that can do 180bhp from stock with a few mods... had both, very light cars with very good traction and very good engines... and a very good aerodinamics. Compared to the crap today car standars even a 318 E36 can be a racecar... thats why the price increased a lot... the 4K 328i i got in 2000 now its about sold at 14K !!! Only compact E36 still being a bit cheap because people dont know they even exists lol... get an E36 now when is still affordable.

I wouldn´t give my E36 away for anything, even bought an additional 325i convertible last year because i got my coupe where i want it pretty much, so obviously needed another project. 😅 You literally can do everything on it yourself, my coupe hasn´t seen a shop/garage since 2016, it´s so simple to maintain or update parts. Old beemers are just better! 😁👍

really nice video! also good job on the technical details. Most people that feature these cars on their channel dont know them. I would just like to add my own 2 cents. e36s only came with m52 non-tu( single vanos)(e36/7 and / 8 came with m52 tu) early e39s and e46s still feature the m52 tu( dual vanos) Both m52 and m52 tu feature a manual throttle cable. so the e36 isnt the last car to come with a manual throttle cable
@Ringfreaks

You are correct about early e39 and early e46 - but in the same time, these cars were built at the same year as E36 Tourings, Cabrios. So it still counts as the last one :)) Thanks for good words about the video!

Excellent video I have a 1996 328i. And a 2006 e90 manual transmission. I'm absolutely torn between the two. I build my cars to daily drive and the E90 obviously has a little bit better amenities. But I have not had the chance to track either one😢

Just keep e36 as it is - it will still give you smiles. And build e90 as a track car 👍

e36 interior is its downfall. e90 can weigh 1000 pounds more depending on options. Having flogged bolth cars, the e36 is worlds ahead on a track imo as long as its got decent power. i would guess a e36 can keep up with a e90 that has 100 extra w.h.p. The e36 with a iron block can do hundreds of thousands of hard miles with basic repairs. I have yet to see a e90 that does not require lots of service, even with basic use. Diffferent era cars. 90s cars were the last to be "built to last" , 2000 cars became more expendable. Open deck aluminum blocks are not my favorite for track cars. plus the e36 parts cost penuts compared to the e90. ( my roomate has 2 e90's )

@@drewdavis239 super valuable information. Thank you. Running costs is a very valid point. The E90 has 2 disas and they are $300 a piece.... But the damn interior and windows on the e36 are so gawd dang frustrating 🤣 I've owned 2 now and FML with those windows and door panels.

You're Norbefilm's brother aren't you? I used to follow his channel probably more than 10 years ago. I also have an E36 330i (M54B30) but I don't have time to drive it much, since it's a full rollcage build. Now I wished I didn't install the rollcage in it and keep it street legal. I bought an E90 330i, but I feel like I need to strip some weight down from it to enjoy it more. How would you compare E90 with E36?
@Ringfreaks
@Ringfreaks 3 ай бұрын
I am 😅 E90 330i is another class and much much faster car than e36 - both engine and suspension is much better. E36 is a great fun, but its already an old csr with old technologies

Did you convert to ms42 or ms43 ? (to run dual vanos) i have a spare m54b30 built for boost, i was going to put it in a e39, but i built a turbo s52 for that car in the end. I converted ms42 to ms43 on the s52 car. So its not my first rodeo, just curious how much trouble it was to rewire the dme if you stayed with bmw?

This was custom built just for this car, but you can also check AST-rollcages, very good precut and prebend cages - so only welding is left to be done.

Is the 2.8 engine better than the 2.5?
@Ringfreaks
@Ringfreaks 3 ай бұрын
Because of more cc its more powerful, but apart engine block, crankshaft and pistons - all other parts are identical between 2.5 and 2.8. So both are equally same. Just not for all racing series it is allowed to drive with 2.8 because classes are usually up to 2500cc
@imnota
@imnota 3 ай бұрын
No replacement for displacement. In stock form it makes same horsepower, but more torque, however at the cost of a less rev happy engine that feels less angry, but still definitely faster. With a tune and M50 manifold from the 2.5 you make 220hp, getting the angriness of the 2.5 while making a lot more power than it
@drewdavis239
@drewdavis239 2 ай бұрын
2.8 is better imo as long as its a iron block. (euro 2.8 is usually aluminum block) The valve train is the limiting factor so they rev the same. lots of solid lifter m52b28 cars spinning it over 8000rpm. 2.8 has 84mm pistons and 84mm stroke. the 2.5 has 84mm pistons and 75mm stroke. fwiw the rods and pistons are the same between a m50 and a m52. I read a m50tu has 140mm rods where all the other m5x engines use 135mm rods.( only one i have not rebuilt so idk?) the 2.8 feels the smoothest of them all, other than a us spec "s50" thats just a m50 with 86mm pistons and 86mm crank.( square) The m50 is "under square" with less stroke than piston width.(2.5) The 2.8 is "square" where they are equal bore and stroke. m54b30 cars are over square where the piston goes up and down further creating more piston speed and side wall loading. (a.k.a. high miles=oval bores) m54b30 is 84mm pistons 89.6 stroke.
@drewdavis239
@drewdavis239 2 ай бұрын
we never got the real euro s50 in north America. the s54 did come here, and has the highest piston speeds of them all (91mm stroke) an amazing race engine, just more complicated than a m50 based car, requires a lot more up keep. aluminum block engines cant take the same abuse as iron, probably why the s54 was iron as well.
