You never said word about the most important difference which is the Albert Durer is lightfast and the inktense is not this is so very important to artist that sell their work. I also think the Albert Durer on your test looks more professional and realistic. Hope this helps you in your art work especially if you are going to sell any artwork

It's nice to see them both used in a single piece, though you are comparing apples against oranges. That the Inktense lift a bit is because not all pigment got activated well enough. You have to use lighter layers if you don't want that. As for the colours matching the barrels, Faber Castell is the only company out there that has almost perfect matches in all their products. I don't have the Albrecht Durer yet, but I do have the wooden box of Inktense, an I really like to use them in colouring books for backgrounds. I do create a heavy layer and thus would have the same problem with the lifting, but I don't add extra layers, instead, I take colour from the pencils themselves on a brush to fix some areas, and I usually also use the Pitt Artist Brush Pens on top, which are also ink, and work perfect together.

I have to agree with Dieter here. This is more of an "apples to oranges" comparison. Derwent makes an actual watercolor pencil and this would have been a better comparison to the Albrecht Durers. I have a set of Inktense and found them much more labor intensive to use as compared to actual watercolor pencils. However, this is a valuable exercise on how ink-based color compares to watercolor.

I think they both have their place. Inktense is for when you want a more vibrant result. Albrecht Durer lends more subtlety and pin-point precision. Those who think one is more lightfast than the other should take an updated look at the lightfast ratings. I would use either for anything, but if I were selling with either media, I'd only sell prints. Even the prints, make sure and print in lightfast ink!

I love your comparisons, so useful to see them both side by side. I love the depth of colour with the inktense but still like the FC. Just to note, if you leave the inktense to dry fully overnight, lifting out will not work as well as it really does dry permanently. Inktense also come as blocks and you get a much smoother texture with them. Also the white block is so opaque, it is a really useful tool.

I loved your portrait, but they're not both watercolour pencils! One is ink, its more vibrant and you can layer forever if you stick to thin layers. The other is watercolour and gives a more subtle effect and lifts much easier. I mainly use my albercht durer for fine details on a larger watercolour painting. The inktense are better for mixed media because the colour can be harsh at times.

I was curious too about lightfastness and know at one point they were testing it, so I got on the Derwent site just now and FINALLY found the info after searching for 15 minutes. Here is what they say in their PDF download you can find under "expert tips" (or something similarly named): "Derwent uses the Blue Wool Scale (ISO 105) to evaluate lightfastness. 90% of colours within the Inktense Pencils and Inktense Blocks ranges are lightfast." Curiously, they do not tell us which 10% are NOT lightfast!!!! ;(

Inktense are ink pencils and I'm fairly sure they are made with color dye vs pigment, as with watercolor pencils. Inktense are great but they are a different beast altogether, and I don't think they are archival which means your painting would be best protected from UV light. Displaying them could cause fading. :/ Although, it is kind of neat that Inktense are used for art with fabrics. :) I love how soft the watercolor pencils are. To me this means they're more versitle for watercolor paintings since I can make them as intense as the ink pencils, I would think, with layering and by using them as colored pencils. This might be a bit more work compared with Inktense but I think it's actually more versitle since it sounds like the range is wider, but that just might be in technique, idk. Plus, the watercolor pencils are archival and can be displayed so that's a plus.
@paintingandchocolate

Derwent shoud realy consider improving the light resistence of the inktense line, since it's an unique media, to make it more professional. Or making a new, more resistent, ink line (like they did with the lightfast line of oil pencils), since it's become a very popular alternative media. This way, they would have one line for each group of artists. But that's just an idea

@@paintingandchocolate Faber Castell are the best watercolour pencils you can get. Bar None. 👍✔ I prefer the caran d'Ache crayons, as the colour is quick to go down and is extra creamy. You can't get the same precision with a crayon, but the ease of application and more opacity, is better in my opinion. A good way to distinguish the difference between the foreground and background, is to do the background in watercolour crayon, and the foreground (or area of interest) with Inktense. Using a large mop brush, to blend the crayon. It was great listening to your experience and personal preferences. As best process is all about experimentation with different materials. 🙂

This was such an interesting video! Thanks for making it! I have both sets and love them both but for different things. I use Faber Castell albrecht durer and Caran D’Ache museum Aquarelle interchangeably together. They’re comparable and both excellent for art on paper/canvas. I like to use the Inktense on fabric. So far it has lasted quite a while with minimal fading once the color has set. They do need layers if you use them with water on paper. I definitely find the Albrecht Durers , the Caran D’Ache Museum Aquarelle and even Supracolor 2 soft to be higher quality for art. Just easier to use and feel and look better to my own eye and for how I use them. But Derwent Watercolor pencils are excellent. They also have some great water soluble Graphite and Graphatint pencils that are so much fun too. Derwent pencils are more niche but they are the absolute BEST once you find the niche that they fill. When I do adult coloring books I find myself using Inktense a lot, because they look cool with and work well with like the Arteza or Kuretake brush pens. Think that the lifting of the Inktense pencils may also have to do with the sizing of the paper, Derwent has special Inktense paper, maybe it is permanent on that. Heard that it can be helpful to wet the paper first, to remove some of the sizing, for the ink to be more staining. Apparently it also helps if you dissolve the pigment first in a palette, to increase the permanence, as that helps to dissolve the particles.

Derwent also does regular watercolour pencils, so that’s not quite equal, apples and bananas. I think the inktense can be a bit granular and the Albert Dürre not so much, in fact very little. Maybe next time a test between true watercolours…..with caran d ache too. Actually, caran d ache has the supracolour and their regular watercolours.

Inktense would be better if it would work as claimed. I know I won't use it with my watercolor unless I'm ok with calling it mixed media because its water soluble ink made from dyes rather than pigments. Many in my set have lousy Lightfast ratings So I gave them to my daughter. Shes into ink art. Real watercolor pencils are acceptable to use with watercolor. I do like my Faber Castell & Caran D Ache watercolor pencils best for occasional touch ups on my watercolor paintings and the Lightfast rating are great. I think Id like playing with the Inktense pans for journaling over the pencils.

@@paintingandchocolate just giving anyone in Australia a ball park price as its alot higher than what is said in your content. Think their $4.30 ish a pencil depending on what art supplier you go to . I have seen them for more that $4.30 , currency conversions cant really be done when your not sure what currency your conveting from . I do like my inktences pencils though. They have a beautiful creamy texture and the pigment just blow me away compaired to the older style of Derwent water colour pencils and they felt kind of chalky.

I like both of these pencils ok but they are not watercolors. Water soluble yes (until they dry). But I they do not lift or reactivate a key component of watercolors. Neither are Caran D'ache Museum Aquarelles. All three great pencils but none are watercolors.

Nice comparison and I like the artwork as well. 💜 Still would like to ask you to learn the correct pronunciation of Albrecht Dürer. Can't help but it goes on my nerves how wrong you pronounced the name all along the video with great confidence. It's not a critique it's just bugs me so much.

Thanks for letting me know. I understand it can feel disturbing, and at the same time I also try to relax about getting everything perfect otherwise but it would be so stressful , and still I'll go check the pronunciation out and hopefully I will remember next time I hope I do! lol)

I'm gonna state something really unpopular here but I'm not a fan of Derwent products. They can be ridiculously expensive and far inferior imo to other leading brands. I know they're hugely popular on youtube but I personally don't enjoy them.
