Most Powerful TDI in America. Episode 2? Kind Of...

This is now a combination of the high horsepower TDI series and a continuation of my TDI swapped Jeep TJ project. How much horsepower is the most powerful 4 cylinder TDI in North America? Good question. I've asked in a bunch of TDI performance Facebook groups for someone in North America to show a dyno sheet of their 4cyl TDI making at least 300 hp. As of the making of this video I have had zero folks post one. Everyone seems to know somebody that makes 300 hp but so far no one has any proof lol. If you have a rig making these numbers in North America then email me!
I know there are 400-500 hp TDIs in other parts of the world but I have yet to see anything close to that demonstrated here in the US.
If I can get to 300-350 I think this might be the only proven TDI build in North America to make this kind of power but we will see. If I can get enough fuel we will see how much more power I can get but as of right now I think 300 crank is very realistic.
Honestly, at the end of the day making the most power is never something I have been interested in. But I want to make a fun series with some big goals and hopefully gain the interest of other folks in this community to build Frankenstein projects as well.

I agree. Ive had my daughters in some of my videos, and some times you get "that guy" who just has to come and shit all over you for having your kid int he video. There are some heartless people out there that just cant stand the sight of a kid in a video like this. Good job involving your son Nate. I hope he grows up to be a proper gearhead.

As a dad of two 13 year olds, an 11 and a 10 year old I love seeing you bring your boy out. A few of my flock have taken an interest here and there and its worth it to slow down and show them the way.

1. I went to college to get the education this kid is getting during preschool. 2. Keep him in it. Its inspiring. My boy, at 4 months, pulled the gear wrench a few times while i clocked a turbo. He loves the ratchet sound. Great channel, its a breath of fresh air compared to the big diesel channels.

My 14 years old daughter is following the track of her older brothers. This summer, she began to go under the Jeep and learn about maintenance and mechanical stuff! She like that a lot!

Nate, great to see a Dad investing in his son. As someone who got to spend a lot of time with his Dad and Grandfather working on mechanical stuff, I promise that time and experience is priceless. My daily is a Jetta TDI, so I am excited to see where this build goes, keep up the good work.

As a father myself. I find the inclusion of your son AWESOME! I try to include mine in as much as I can. He's a fast learner and super fun to be around. These are the times that matter most to them and memories they will have forever.

I get both my son and daughter in the garage with me and I always put the tools in their hands I definitely don’t find it destructive I find it awesome show them it’s on to get their hands dirty

Love seeing your son with you, my old man always had me in the shop and I helped him rebuild his Chev when I was 4. Probably the reason why I am as involved with automotive stuff today. I tdi swapped my 4runner just to prove to him that I picked some stuff up when I was younger

Love seeing the little ones involved. I heard a few years ago, " take your kids hunting and you won't have to hunt for your kids ", I think this can apply to almost anything that you are doing. Great job Dad

As a Father myself, I agree with Matt Conroy. Kids aren’t a distraction. We need to pass on our information to the next generation of enthusiasts. I say enthusiasts, because no matter what your hobby or profession we need to get the younger generation into it and know about it, for it to carry on in the future. Thank you Nate for all your great content. Keep showing and teaching that little man everything you know. Also if your daughter is interested in it do the same with her. My girls want to go and do everything that I do. They are a little young yet for the hunting stuff, but they have been off-roading since before they were born. Six months after they were born they started riding with my wife and I on the trails and the dunes.

as someone who loves jeeps( I used to have an 81 CJ-7) and who was huge in the early TDI game(I have an '06 Golf TDI) and have personally worked with Matt Whitbread on a fab build for TDIs. I can tell you he is an absolute magician with the TDI engine. I have driven in one of his early twin turbo tdi builds in an old 96 passat wagon, that thing scared the bejeezus out of me it was soo strong. you have the best parts with the best fabricator out there. you have done your research and i applaud your for your great research. love this build as the TDI engine it a powerhouse.

It's a great thing to show your kids about engines and other automotive things. I started learning at the age of 4. Lots memories from having your son in the video my stepfather showed me mechanics ..I value your channel. It's our job as parents to pass on the every day skills and both of my son's are getting every thing I know. Your awesome Nate.

I agree with all the support for having your son in the shop with you. I would only add, never let being effecient stop you from working with your kids. It might take five times longer but it will be 1000 times more rewarding. The time spent now will come back around when they are older. Plus you will never look back and think man I wish I had done more builds but my son slowed me down. You only have 18 years until they are on their own spend every minute with them.

Speaking of passing on information to your family. Taught all of my daughter's how to check your vehicle's. To this day they are still learning. Asking me about a noise they hear and want my ear. Now my 5 year old grandson is my tail. When I'm getting my boots on. Where are you doing today grandpa? Are you staying home or going to work? If I tell him I'm staying home. He is all excited and then comes. What are you doing today and can I help? If I have a simple project. I will lay out tools we need and I let him tackle it. I have a magnet tray we he removes a part to keep track. His older brother is also helping. Even when I slide under my truck. He will slide under and asks. What you fixing grandpa? What's this do grandpa? Lots and lots of questions. I don't mind. It makes my whole day to have them by my side. I will never get the chance again. ❤

My son used to watch me work on my rigs and even his first car. I finally realized that I wasn't doing him any favors by fixing his stuff. I backed off, but am always available for questions and showing him some tips and tricks. He swapped his rear end in his samurai last year, and now he does his own work. I was surprised how knowledgeable he was after I took a step back. Having kids watch and just generally be involved in repairs not only helps us bond, but their brains soak up information like a sponge. Start them young and watch in amazement at what you have created.

My dad just bought a (de)magnetizer from Amazon, used it for some RC car drivers. He was always busy "making the money" but I remember when we first started working on engines together (go-kart my friend pulled out of the creek). He showed me how to lap valves etc. So good on you for giving you kid a head start! Be a cool dad and get him a minibike when he inevitably wants one lol. Best way to let a kid to learn engines is when their minibike isn't working (or is not fast enough) 😉 when all they want to do is ride. I couldn't fix a bicycle chain (had no desire to) before I got the minibike that I learned how to turn a wrench on.

I like your discussion about teaching the next generation the skills that you have. I don't wanna be that guy... I hate being that guy... But I have to be that guy. Please for the love of God, get some safety glasses for your son. I absolutely love that you're sharing your knowledge to your son, and please, never, ever think that you including him in any of the videos or projects would be a distraction or an issue in any way. But please, glasses! I was around your sons age when I got shrapnel in my eye that to this day impedes my sight and kept me from joining the Airforce to become a pilot. Had I been wearing them I would have been fine. Continue the awesome content and by all means, teach your kid everything you can, I love it!

I don't know about any body else but I think it's great that your willing to teach your son things like this. My dad never could work on cars but I was lucky in that I had 2 uncles that let me learn from them. Good job dad....

As a guy who grew up being my dad's shadow when it come to basically everything automotive related or farm related. Your son will cherish the time you spend with him in the shop, as I'm sure you do to. I know some people might think of him as a distraction, but there intidled to their own opinions. Enjoy your time with your son, who knows, maybe we'll see him building killer rigs right along side you in the next few years

Being a father of a 21yr old and a 24yr old... I can say that you should spend every second you can with your kids. I learned to enjoy every stage of their lives as they grew up and now we are just as close as when they were young.

One thing I caught myself doing at work since being remote for years (even before Covid) was to say “sorry I was…”. After thinking about it for a split second the 3rd or 4th time I said it, I realized I wasn’t sorry one bit. Time with our kids is some of the most valuable time we would never get back, glad your son is interested in learning what you know!

This is the way I learned as a kid. I was right there with my dad and my step dad. They both taught me a ton and I can say now that I’m a adult there isn’t anything I put my mind to that can’t be fixed. Hands is the way to go better than any piece of paper imo.

I absolutely agree about the kids. I was like 9 or 10 a car needed a new water pump, he gave me the part showed me where it was what all I had to remove to get it off, said you know where the tools are, get it done. He had always had me & my lil brother helping on whatever project he was doing before that. I wouldn’t know 75% of the skills I have today if not for him doing that!!!

On a side note I screwed up with my 3 boys. I was always worried about them getting hurt (got the truck setting on jack stands doing whatever) that I didn’t teach them as much as my Dad did me. So they are in their 20’s now and I’m teaching them this stuff now

I honest love seeing you as a dad. My father was a very abusive person when I was a child he taught me about tools but didn’t bother teaching my about cars. I learned it all on my own now me and him have a great relationship and although I don’t want children I appreciate good dads raising men and not boys.

Propane... And Propane accessories... JK, but for real, Propane injection for added fuel if your injectors are not enough. Also, it's awesome to see your son getting in on the project and learning stuff. Just think how much better you would be if you started that young...

Great video as always. I agree with the idea on the hydro lock on the oil bending the rod. Here is a DYI flow bench and the science behind it. I know how you like to tinker.

You are 100% correct. Teach your son or daughter. Your videos are better with your son in them. I love to see that. I let my kids help me with whatever I was doing and I did that with my grandkids also.

All I can add to this, BEW can handle above 29psi. I have a ALh running 28th I peak. I know, dangerous game. Lol I’m am excited for this build. Keep at it and thank you for putting all your eggs in one basket. Big risk for huge reward.

Thanks for including your son! I wish my 15 year old son showed more interest in getting hands on with car maintenance and repairs. My 13 year old daughter on the other hand loves to tag along and help!

I've seen a lot of people with Tacoma's do similar things hydro-locking their engines with too much oil :x. Has to do generally with them steeper inclines etc. The generally accepted fix, is a catch can which I will be doing to my Tacoma anyway. It mostly buys you some time for certain obstacles as the oil will flood the catch can before being sucked into the PCV system. That is a major bummer about the engine, but super rad build and I can't wait to see how it turns out!

I have a factory 6 and I’m planning to go to an 8. Even though I will never build this I will be watching talk the episodes Nate. Great job man; especially with your son.
