Many states and companies have developed laser weapons since about 1960. There is a laser race due to the advantages of lasers over traditional weapons. Laser beams travel at light speed, so it is impossible to evade a laser bullet, especially during air combat. Laser guns have no tangible recoil, and their ammunition is limited only by their energy source's power. A single shot from a laser gun costs 99 cents, so even a half-billion-dollar installation is not much.

as we get away from missles i am wondering if we are also going to get away from bullets? i keep thinking of phasers set to stun. such a handgun would eliminate the current gun problem with conventional lead bullets.

Remember WWII and the Russian T-34 tank? It was greatly inferior to the German tanks, but there were so many of them that they could defeat the Germans. Remember that!

The T-34 was not greatly inferior to the German tanks, especially near the beginning of the Soviet/German conflict. It was a great tank for its time. But the point is well taken.

One can shoot down a Drone with a Shotgun or throw a Rock at It. We've always thought a Laser needed 1 M-Watt to Burn Through Metal in 3 Seconds at 10 miles. (say on the Horizon). BUT what happens to a laser in a Rain-Storm or in Fog or just the Salt Spray from a Ship getting all over the Optics? Not trying to be negative BUT there is a Lot that "Isn't Talked About".

Laser beam can be reflected by some objects? If it is so, there will be chance of self destruction. Also say for example: If a fighter jet target a moving object, but miss target and will destroy much more civilians than a bomb cause it will just take milliseconds to destroy large area. One bullet will kill one but beam can just kill hundreds unwarranted/error kiling. i am not sure but just questions come to my mind seeing too much of its Power.

@@Snowwie88 Yes, of course it is. water vapor will refract and scatter light. When you're talking about firing through 100 miles of fog, it's going to change the energy density of the laser considerably by the time it gets to a target.

That and the power source. Quark fusion is a theoretical power source at this point. Fusion reactors have been 20 years away since the 1950's It was only recently that it was even possible to get more energy out of a fusion reactor than was needed to contain and run the reaction. Quark fusion hasn't even be achieved in the real world yet. Even if someone, somehow built a functional quark reactor tomorrow, it would be 20 to 50 years away until it became a practical energy source.

I hate you throw up bucket of cold water on this. However, it must be done! The laser is severely restricted to as how far it's effectiveness is. I think it's just about a mile! And that's not nearly enough! Until they greatly increase the laser's distance, it's mission will be limited as well.
