You should see how tall, long and curvy my mother of millions got. They're turning pinkish purple. They're more than 4 feet long. I have them hanging on my apricot tree and it's growing like crazy. Watching it bloom and seeing the flowers grow is beautiful. They are growing these beautiful pink flowers at the very top and little flowers on each little tip of the leaves. Can't wait till it blossoms.

This was the best video in my opinion you have made. Your description of the genus was great and you were not speaking so fast that I was able to know you had not already moved on from that subject. Please don't take this as a negative. I'm a horticulturist and I love your business but I'm partially deaf and pronunciation is important to me when heard slower. I also read lips. And trying to smile to much while speaking I have no way of following. This video was much better. 😁 please accept my opinion.

Your so happy and enjoy sharing and I hope any opinion from anyone is constructive. I have a hard time hearing anything. I'm partially deaf. So I read lips but your always smiling. Glad that you slowed down on descriptions. And I really liked the information on how big a plant can get and so forth. Most succulents don't do well in freezing weather. My plants do very well and get quite large. It has been my observations that plants that are very wet in winter have more problems with freezing. I have always has a type of etchavaria. Spelling off. That if I let dry completely and place place in a sheltered location that gets lots of sun in winter but no precipitation. They live. I like longer videos of information about climates in different parts of us.

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana are my favorites, those blooms last for weeks on end. But they do love brightness. I think they grow best with regular pruning to them nice and compact. The more energy that can be put into growing the lower leaves the "beefier" the succulent. I have seen so many that look vine-like and quite unappealing, but to each their own.

I’m amazed at the variety within that family of plants! To propagate by leaf, your website advises the end should NOT touch (or be imbedded in) the soil until it has roots and a plantlet, correct? So many different methods out there, I just want one trusted source so I follow you guys.
@Mountaincrestgardens

Laying the leaf flat on the soil is the more common practice, but this 2016 study found it was more successful to plant each leaf upright, with the cut end in the soil: www.researchgate.net/publication/322598708_Growth_of_Crassulaceae_Succulents_as_Influenced_by_Leaf_Cutting_Type_and_Planting_Position There are a lot of methods out there because a lot of methods work well, so I recommend experimenting! Thank you. I learned that I should keep my Kalanchoe closer to the lights. I have my succulents in the house. They are in a plant tent to protect them and my cat who likes to chew on my plants. My question is...How long should I leave the lights on? I read that the lights should be 12 on 12 off. Is that year round or should the "days" be shorter in the winter? I would love to see a video on lighting for indoor succulents. I just got a Kalanchoe pink butterfly from you. It is very pink and pretty. Now I know how to care for it.
@Mountaincrestgardens
@Mountaincrestgardens 2 жыл бұрын
12 hours per day is a great place to start and certainly a lot of people keep that duration all year long to great success. Personally, I do keep the lights on longer in summer (up to 15 hours per day) to mimic the changing seasons, but I have not run controlled tests to see if this makes a difference. There are a lot of details and variables, so a succulent grow light video would be useful. I'll se what I can do :) Annie

This very helpful. I have a quick question. My mother of million has gotten very tall. Can I trim it and replant it without worrying that the bottom plant will die?
@Mountaincrestgardens
@Mountaincrestgardens Жыл бұрын
You'll want to cut off the top, compact section, let the cut dry for a couple days, then replant that part to re-root. The remaining, bottom portion should also survive on its own, but they can look a little funky. More sunlight can also be helpful to make a Kalanchoe grow compactly, instead of stretching for light, if that is what's happening. But healthy, mature Kalanchoe can be naturally tall too :)

I just was given a leaf of a Mother of Thousands plant. The directions are in Japanese. I think the gist of it was to tape the leaf (I taped it to my tile backsplash in my kitchen), with a paper towel behind it and I have been spraying it every day. Babies are forming but the middle of the leaf is turning brown and yellow. I am not sure what to do next - do I plant the leaf with the babies still attached sticking out of the soil, or pull the babies off? Thanks for your terrific video. I hope I get a response before the middle completely dies. Thanks!!!
@Mountaincrestgardens
@Mountaincrestgardens Жыл бұрын
Interesting, we've never heard of this propagation method before! But yes, you can move the leaves and babies and lay them on a pot of soil near a sunny window. Keep the soil a bit damp until the new plants establish roots. The old leaf will die and you'll eventually be able to remove its remains without dislodging your new plantlets. (pro tip: pick a pot with a drainage hole and a gritty soil)

That depends on the type of plant. I've had cactus seeds take years to grow into a 1" wide stem. But a small Kalanchoe plant can usually grow noticeably each month. Are these seeds you're germinating? Are they getting lots of sunshine and regular moisture?

@Mountaincrestgardens
@Mountaincrestgardens 2 жыл бұрын
I can't say for sure without seeing the plant, but it's possible! Turning green to burgundy is a natural stress response for succulents. What would be worrying is if the freeze was so cold or lasted long enough to cause permanent frost damage. This would show up as squishy, juicy, translucent bits, similar to rot. If you have these, cut them off and try to propagate any remaining healthy tissue. Good luck! Annie

I have a Paddle Plant, I've had it for a little over a year now ... I had no idea what it was when I bought it, I just thought it was cool. It's reeeeeeally stretched out tho and it's not growing anymore paddles 😬 in fact I've lost a couple due to my dog knocking it over outside. I'm not sure how to fix this, should I just cut the top off and replant like I've heard some people say? It has a lot of the white powder, which I guess is somewhat typical?
@Mountaincrestgardens
@Mountaincrestgardens 2 жыл бұрын
Stretched out means it's not getting enough sunlight. First, I would gradually move it to a sunnier location over the course of a week. Once it's healthy, then you can cut the top of the stem and re-root it for a second chance at a healthy, compact form. And yes, a covering of white powder is normal for Paddle Plant. You should get some better red tones when it's in more sun too! Annie

It depends, but 3"-4" deep is a good place to start if you're transplanting from our 2" pots. Deeper pots can hold more water and take too long to dry out for a succulent's liking.

@Mountaincrestgardens
@Mountaincrestgardens 2 жыл бұрын
Yay for your first flower! Succulents almost always prefer a gritty, well-draining soil over potting soil. I'd recommend amending it with extra mineral grit, e.g. pumice, perlite, or coarse sand. Many garden centers sell a bagged cactus & succulent soil. Usually, I recommend mixing even "cactus & succulent soil" with an equal volume of mineral grit, but Kalanchoe are some of the more flexible, forgiving succulents, so you'd probably be fine as long as you don't water too frequently. Sorry, it's very tough to accurately diagnose a plant without seeing it or knowing its environmental conditions. Certainly for bugs in the soil, you'll want to re-pot into new, gritty soil and spray the plant with isopropyl alcohol. And if it is overwatered, it needs to have any squishy, discolored tissue removed then be left in a sunny spot to dry out, to prevent the spread of rot. Be sure you're using a container with a drainage hole and that you only water when the soil is completely dry AND the leaves feel more flexible. Annie
