Less then 0.03% - that's only a THIRD OF ONE PER CENT - of firearms used in Australia - to commit - gun crimes - is tied to a legally registered - licensed firearms. So 99.7% of firearms used in Australia - for crime are illegal or stolen. Put out an ongoing reward - for people to hand in illegal firearms - or dob in - people with illegal firearms. And the government has an amnesty that is always ongoing - and pays for the weapons brought in - and also pays large rewards for illegal weapons that are hidden. So picking on the registered firearms owners - does not solve gun crime. The people who go to the trouble to register - firearms - are not the problem. It's the people with illegal firearms - are the ones using them for the purposes of crime. Again labor is picking on the wrong crowd. As usual.

That's the biggest load of Political Bullshit I have heard in years. The National Firearms Agreement is any thing but, each State and Territory has it's own different Firearms Laws that are basically incompatible with each other. Each State and Territory has different computer and paper based systems to keep track of their own registered firearms. No where are any of the Grey Firearms accounted for, nor will they ever be, as long as the few who refuse to comply still do their own thing. It will amount to Billions of Tax payer dollars to firstly decided on what is to be entered into the database, then it will take years to convert and input each State and Territories less than perfect records. For instance, I have a Sportco Model 44 which is a single shot rifle, but in the Police Firearms Registry Database it is listed as a 5 shot magazine rifle.

All firearms are already registered at a State and Territory level in Australia . All they have to do is give each other access to the data banks . Would cost nothing .

Firearms are already registered. There are already rules in place to facilitate interstate transfer. How is this going to make a difference? Why spend $160 million on yet another administrative tool that does the same as what we already have?

Saffer here: We have a central firearms registry in Pretoria. It has done fokkol to combat violent crime and the added jungle of red tape has just made it more difficult for people wanting to apply for licensing of a firearm (as well as diverting limited police resources to herding proverbial cats). In other words, the innocent are subjected to government-mandated anarcho-tyranny: being at the mercy of criminals preying on society.

Just to set a few people straight. If you have a firearms license, all firearms you own are already registered too to your name / license / address ect.

That way they know where to go when they decide to come for your guns.

Registration then confiscation. Count on it .

Your registry isn't going to help, much. If someone is predisposed to violence, they will get guns despite the registry. The problem is not the guns themselves but the people. And if there weren't guns, then they would use knives, machetes, clubs, rocks, screwdrivers, fists, vehicles.... I need not go on. Almost anything can be used as a weapon.

Disarming the masses

Every state has a registry (and every registry has been hacked providing crims with a shopping list.) Why would it take over a hundred million to link these registries??.
