Firewatch has a MUCH scarier moment where (spoilers) someone violently knocks you out by repeatedly bashing your head in with a shovel and it's really loud and sudden and you can't quite make out what they look like. It's basically a horrific jump-scare.

For me, it has to be when you’re in the Deep Roads in Dragon Age Origins. *SPOILERS* you have to go on a quest in search of the dwarves paragon. You’ve been battling through hordes of Darkspawn and you reach a maze of tunnels that looks like they’re covered in offal and slime. As you’re going through these tunnels you begin to hear a despondent voice echoing as it recites a very disturbing poem: “First day, they come and catch everyone. Second day, they beat us and eat some for meat. Third day, the men are all gnawed on again. Fourth day, we wait and fear for our fate. Fifth day, they return and it’s another girl’s turn. Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams. Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew. Eighth day, we hated as she is violated. Ninth day, she grins and devours her kin. Now she does feast, as she’s become the beast.” It’s not until you come to the end of the tunnels that you get a clearer picture of what this poem is referring. I’ve played through this game so many times and this part is still very disturbing and chilling for me.

Something that absolutely terrified me when I was younger was when I was playing the game Digimon Digital Card Battle. When you complete Infinity Tower, the final boss of that arena (VenomMyotismon) gets possessed by a programmer simply known as A. The first indication that something is wrong is when the boss starts repeating previous dialogue and lots of text boxes come up. The music also stops, replaced by a lot of sounds that sound like something is crashing. And then you're greeted by a black screen that occasionally flashes A's face in hologram form, which freaked me out so much I turned the game off and didn't do that section again until years later.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Me and a buddy had spent an hour or hours just poking about, solving mysteries, chilling, when from out of nowhere the game threw a jump scare in our faces. It terrified me to the extent that I screamed and threw my arms in the air, losing my grip on the controller and effectively throwing it in my friend's face with a thud. Adding insult to injury I then refused to play anymore and forced my battered friend to do the rest of the scary bits.

For me it’s a moment from Abzu, a beautiful game about the ocean and the importance of conservation. Or at least it is if you’re not deathly terrified of the ocean like me. Specifically there’s one part that I can only assume is supposed to beautiful and calming, but for me is utterly terrifying. Up until this point you’d mostly be in coves or temples, when suddenly you exit out and you’re in the vast bottomless ocean and a pod of whales pass by. You follow the whales for what feels like ten minutes but is probably more like two, just swimming across this expanse with nothing to protect you next to a pod of these enormous monstrosities. I’m not exaggerating when I say I nearly fell into a very real panic.

The interesting thing about GLaDOS/HAL 9000 parallels is that HAL was conceived at a time when AI was more of a fictional construct than a practical possibility. HAL is introduced as human-like because the audience is familiar and comfortable with humans, but they aren’t familiar with or comfortable with living computers. It's when HAL starts acting robotic and calculated that the audience realizes "oh no, he's a computer" and he becomes threatening. By the time GLaDOS was conceived, we had become used to automated systems. Synthetic voices offering us information is something we encounter daily. GLaDOS is introduced as a pre-programmed voice because that's what the audience is familiar and comfortable with. It's when she starts acting human and emotional that the audience realizes "oh no, she's alive" and she becomes threatening.

The freaking butler Winston in Lara Croft's mansion in the old Tomb Raider game. Technically it isn't even the main part of the game but damn he gave me the cREEPS to the point that I always tried to clear a room or area before he could come find me there skskdjskdndkdj (Yes i know and have used the freezer trick countless times)
