My wife and I use to go to that shopping center quite frequently. The original goodwill was to the left of the frame factory. There was also a Weis market to the right of the now abandoned Rite Aid.

State college resident here... Fuji Jade garden did not go out of business. They moved across town to expand to a bigger restaurant.

Restaurant was once a quasi grocery store and sundries store called Scot’s Low Cost

Just up to a few years ago, the Ames store about a mile down on S Atherton St was converted to a new Giant store. The Autoport hotel that you referred to still sits empty to this day..the new owners proposed a 122 room extended stay hotel and approved by the council right before the virus hit in 2020, and has been sitting idle ever since.

This shopping center reminds me of one of my hometown shopping center. It is now demolished just 2 months ago, but in the 60s and early 70s, it had an old JM Fields, Woolworth, a drug store and a Stop & Shop grocery in one building, a two-story office building to the west of it, and the third building was a dry cleaner, a trading stamp place, beauty salin, bank (my bank since i was 6), a barber shop and a ice cream restaurant. The shopping center was 90% vacant since 2001. The town is building condos and retail on it now.

I grew up just a few blocks from this shopping center and lived in SC through the mid 80’s. Still get back there occasionally. The Jade Garden was originally (late 60’s - 70’s) a grocery store, (I think an A&P but I’m fuzzy on the details). Pietro’s Hair Salon moved to a “new” shopping center on South Atherton. C.C. Peppers was next to Pietro’s. They were a GREAT sub shop! The Goodwill store was a Wolf’s furniture company before they moved out by Lowe’s and was an Ames type store before that. I don’t remember what the name was. There was a Frame Factory and Hi Way Pizza was at the end of the building. The Rite Aid was originally a Thrift Drug store and in that section there was a card store, a Christian bookstore, a candy shop (where we bought gobs of Swedish fish on our way to junior high & high school) and a shoemaker. There was another store that Weis took over when they expanded but I can’t remember what it was. It’s sad to see how far this place has gone down hill. It was at one time a thriving shopping center that was quite busy. Even up until the early 90’s it was a pretty hopping place. Hope this helps.

I lived there years ago.. there was a goodwill, a laundry cleaners, a Weis supermarket.. they used to have a little fair (carnival) set up behind the building.. fuji jade was a great sushi place one of the best.. of course this was many years ago

The former Goodwill was built by Town and Country, and was a variety store. The store where Rite Aid closed recently was originally a Grants. There was Glick Shoe Store, a restaurant with Peanuts decor inside, and a children’s clothing store that I can remember. My parents and I used to shop there in the late ‘60s. Weis has been there forever. When I lived in College Township in the ‘80s, that is where we shopped for groceries.

Goodwill recently relocated. Rite-aid went out of business across the country just a few months ago.

It was called the Autoport. It had historical significance. It was the oldest motel in Pennsylvania. It had been family owned, but was left abandoned for many years after the family sold it. I have heard that it had been sold, but nothing has been done to it. Such a shame. When the family owned it, it was a beautiful motel, with an excellent restaurant.

You can call this strip mall.... as " board center"

Right before the bobcat was a Thai restaurant, I had my reception dinner in there with my wife and family. Had amazing food but they combined with a Chinese place and it went to shit. It was open in. The building where goodwill was at in had a karaoke place we sang at that night.

That bobcat was probably used to clean up the snow

Interesting, I lived over there a few months ago and that Rite Aid was still open! Sad :/

That restaurant was part of an immigration raid in 2014 so I imagine closed after that. I ate there once before that when my sister was in college.

Fuji jade had either raves or after hours club for a while.

This building looks like it was subdivided after a grocery store or some other big box retailer went out of business or moved.

The State College borough is constantly pushing away businesses from the area. On the other side the city of Altoona that is nearby has a much greater commercial activity and doesn't depend on a gigantic college like Penn State. Wonder why is that happening? Taxes? Local politics?
