Moth Beans Curry | Matki Curry | Simple Curry For Chapati/Rice/Dosa
Moth Beans Curry, also known as "Matki Usal," is a flavorful and nutritious Indian dish made with moth beans (Matki) and a blend of aromatic spices. Here's a quick overview of how to prepare it:
Ingredients:
Moth beans/Matki/moth dal/ - 1 cup
Oil - 1 tablespoon
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Jeera/cumin seeds - 1tsp
Dry red chilli - 1, broken
Onion - 1/2 medium, finely chopped
Green chilli - 1, slit
Curry leaves - 10-12
Ginger - 1/2inch, chopped
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder - 1/2 tsp
Jaggery - 1tsp
Garam masala - pinch
Water - 1/2 to 1 cup or as required
Coriander leaves - few chopped
Procedure:
Preparation: Soak the moth beans in enough water for about 6 hours or overnight. Drain the soaked beans before using.
Cooking the Moth Beans: In a pressure cooker, add the soaked and drained moth beans along with 2 cups of water. Add pinch of salt. Pressure cook for about 2-3 whistles, or until they are cooked and soft. You can also cook them in a regular pot, but it will take longer. Once done, set them aside.
Tempering: In a large pan or skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds & cumin seeds and let them splutter.
Adding Onions, chilli and ginger: Add the finely chopped onions, green chilli, ginger and curry leaves and sauté for a minute.
Adding Spices: Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Stir well and cook for a few minutes until the spices are well roasted and the raw smell disappears.
Cooking Moth Beans with the Spice Mix: Add the cooked moth beans to the pan and mix well with the spice mixture.
Adding Water: Add some water (about 1/2 to 1 cup) to achieve your desired consistency for the curry. Bring it to a boil and then simmer for 5-7 minutes.
Garam Masala: Sprinkle garam masala over the curry and mix it in.
Garnish: Finally, garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
Your Moth Beans Curry is ready to serve. You can enjoy it with steamed rice, roti, or any bread of your choice. Enjoy your meal!
