When I was a kid I remember seeing mourning dove nests. They make the worst nest in the world. It’s a flat platform of sticks and invariably the eggs will roll out. So doves are not the architects of the bird world.

Except this bird didn't eat the chick. She cleaned up around it, cleaned its body and took it out of the nest for hygiene's sake. I've heard of some animals doing what you saw the hamster doing, so it certainly does happen (as you know). Typically, I'm pretty sure devouring a dead infant is only done by carnivores or omnivores, but not by herbivores like this dove. I could be wrong.

First we kill the disabled, then the weak, then we start inventing reasons to kill off offspring based on class and ethnicity and geographical place of origin until total breeding control is established divided into class to breed perfect servant classes and ruling classes. Unlike animals, we can actually help save and even improve the life of 'non-viable offspring' and excepting the worst cases help them survive and lead perfectly normal lives, so we don't need to 'act on it'. And the majority of people who have access to these resources aren't the people who need to stop having kids. Most first world countries don't have extensive overpopulation problems.

At 4:37 you can tell the chick is sick and dying, Dove knows there is something wrong and will abandon its young to their fate, happens all the time in nature, in other bird species the strongest chick pushes out its sibling so it has a better chance to live, in nature there is no emotional feelings, only the instinct to survive.

This variety of bird usually known as 'spotted dove' is a very mild and harmless bird. Generally in Kerala, a southern state in India, it is called as Aripravu since it feeds mainly on Ari/Rice & paddy. Some villagers consider it as a symbolic representative of hindu goddess (hemambika). Now-a-days, hybrid varieties of this bird is reared by many in their houses. This bird never eats its kids. After hatching, it rolls out the egg shells or takes away in its beak and puts somewhere else. In the video, we can see how innocent the bird is as it does not know that the baby is about to fall down. Again, after confirming death of its kid, it carries the dead body in its beak for throwing somewhere away from the nest. Any how, the quality of the video and your patience deserve merit.

The tragedy started before the crows. You can see that one baby is dead and not breathing, and the other is in the process of dying (mouth open and gasping for air) when the cooing starts. The cooing isn't normal cooing either. This is a mother who knows that her attempt at raising a family has failed and is grieving over her loss. Though ravens will sometimes steal babies from a nest, they usually wait until the parents are away getting food and sneak in surreptitiously. Ravens far more often are on nature's cleanup patrol. They probably know that there is one dead chick in the nest, and that another one is dying, and are just waiting to grab up a free meal. The mother is stalwart and not willing to abandon her sick baby, and the crows move on. The baby is not responding as it normally would, and since it won't raise it's head to feed, the mother assumes it is dead. She is trying to rebuild the next so that she can use it again in another attempt at raising a family. Note that in the picture where the dying chick is being pushed out, the dead chick is already gone. Aside from it's behaviour, you can tell that this is a very sick chick because it continues to hold it's mouth open, it is unable to raise its head, and it is taking on a rather blanched look, which is indicative of liver and kidney failure. I don't know what happened to the chicks to cause this, but under the circumstances there are two three possibilities; The chicks may have been hatched with some sort of defect which caused them to not be able to uptake the nutrition from their parents' pigeon milk (I note that in the parts where the parent is trying to feed the babies, you don't see any of it trailing as it usually does), the babies may have caught some sort of a bug which the parents had developed a resistance to, or the chicks may have succumbed to a poison of one sort or another which was not present in large enough quantities to kill the parents, but was enough to kill the much smaller and more delicate babies. If this banana tree was in a banana plantation, the later possibility becomes much more suspect. The mother dove does not have hands, so what is she supposed to do about it when the chick falls the second time? She also knows, unlike the person who made this video, that the chick is dying, and that it's continued presence in the nest will only prolong its suffering. It's a harsh reality, but that's life in the wild. Dying of exposure, or being picked off by a predator after falling from the nest shortens the time suffering, and in the end is better than dragging it out. This mother bird is not a bad mother. She is doing the best she can with what is available to her. The maker of this movie does not tell us how the chick got back in the nest. One has to wonder at the end when the mother begins to eat her dead chick if there was some sort of nutritional issue going on. I think back to the indications at the beginning that there was no Pigeon milk being produced. The other thing is it never shows the mother actually eating the baby. It only shows her trying to get a hold of it to remove it from the nest. Again, note that the other chick disappeared long before this time and since it was already dead in the cooing part of the video it was probably carried away from the nest in the same manner. It is an instinctual response which is there to keep from attracting predators to the nest, just as egg shell cleanup is. They will do this whether the nest is reused or not. Due to the interference of the video maker in putting the dying baby back in the nest, the nest would have most likely been abandoned. Ignorance leads to judgments and assumptions which are often incorrect. That is the case in this video.
@JayP-kd5rc
@JayP-kd5rc 4 жыл бұрын
The baby didn't look well before it fell out. Should have been more lively. Maybe the mom didn't feed them enough, or maybe they were sick and weren't going to make it. If the babies are sick and weak and cannot beg for the feeding and come up for it, then the parent bird cannot feed them. It's a joint effort. I think they may have been sick. That's sad, but it does happen.

Better yet, are you absolutely CERTAIN doves do that? Actually, that was a rhetorical question and I’ll go ahead and give you the answer to the misinformation you’re spreading with your comment. No, doves do NOT consume their young and instead pick them up before dropping them out of the nest or they shove them out of the nest which is what the dove in that video did. She prodded the dead hatchling when she realized something was wrong in an attempt to check if her baby was still alive and when she confirmed it wasn’t she picked it up and carried it out of the nest before dropping it. Now then, I’m also going to let you know that no, not ALL animals eat their young. To just sit there and say “oh well it’s just an animal, of course it’s going to eat it’s young” is really ignorant of you. Humans for example, do not consume their young, doves do not consume their young, green iguana do not consume their young, orca and dolphins do not consume their young, honestly I could go on, but I’m sure that list is adequate enough to prove a point. Again, please don’t go around ignorantly spreading misinformation on things you have no actual knowledge in.

My dog once had a litter of 6 puppies. One seemed to have Down syndrome or was visually and physically defective in some way. She often never feed it or paid attention to it. One time we came into our back yard and she had buried her in a small grave in the backyard ALIVE! We intervened and would give the puppy “private” feedings with mom. And other wise spoiled her rotten. She grew and was a happy active puppy tho she was still limited. Vet said she was healthy but had some type of gene disorder, but should be fine. She played with her siblings and seemed happy. We kept her inside in a castle puppy bed. The other 6 dogs slept together in our garage so they can have access to the backyard. On day after she was only 7 months we came into the room to find her dead. She died in sleep seemingly healthy. My dog was very sad which was confusing because she tried to bury her. Her second littered. She crushed the runt when no one was around using her body weight. We just trusted her and Gave him an extravagant funeral. Her third litter all survived. Though some had extra toes. On the back legs.

Here is a thing, animal can also be stressful while parenting babies. This is a great video to show how the mother takes care of her 2 babies somehow I feel l like the mother knew that she has been watched by something, that may lead to the tragic end. However, I learn to keep distance from dove because dove was nesting right by my mirror window and had 2 eggs, I did not know dove would be that shy and easy-to-freaked. I opened my window to see how many eggs they got, I scared both of them away, saw they got 2 eggs. The sad end had shown later that they never return to nest ever again. I was really pissed to see the 2 left over eggs for days. It's DOVE!

No don't blame the poor crow it did nothing wrong the babies were sick already and also where was the father ?Doves and pigeons raise babies together if one of the parents is missing it's harder for the one parent to raise it on it's own and keep it nice and warm. The moment the baby gets cold he will die very fast withing hours.

Here's the fact, if the mother dove finds out her chick was 2 male chicks, she will choose 1 to live, and chosen one will feed and the unlucky one will die of hunger or push to fall. Maybe when you return the fall chick back in the nest, her mother confused which chick is the chosen one., and push to fall the wrong chick. Please 🙏 next time don't interrupt the process of nature. To avoid this kind of incident. By the way she's not eating her died chick, she's cleaning the nest for her future eggs. God bless you 🙏🙏🙏

I am hatching a mourning dove at the moment... its about to break in its shell the first one... the mother abandoned both eggs after a scare so After confirming that shes not coming back I went ahead and hatch the eggs... I also have another newly fledged dove in my care because she flew through our glass door and hurt itself so I nurse It until its ok. I tamed her in a matter of 5 minutes. I Have learned that mother doves when she discovers that her baby is sick or have abnormalities she will push her baby out of the nest so to save the other baby that is healthy. It is important for them to keep their lineage or if babies are sick she will throw both out of the nest or eat them and strive to get another male dove so she can once again lay eggs. In this instance. I Think she got threatened by the crow didnt leave the babies behind so she planned it already, she knows that she cant feed her babies becoz if she leaves crow will eat them so she immediately build the nest again so to prepare for hatching another pair probably. Since the kids havent been fed for a couple of days she knew they cant be saved after a couple of days it died finally she left to find another male dove.

The tragedy here is nest placement. Mother was not pushing him out on purpose. The baby she stopped feeding was likely too cold to offer a proper feeding response. The dead baby she ate was one that died a while ago. They have to discard dead babies one way or another as dead invite predators and harmful germs which can kill their other brood. By eating them, they get back some of the nutrients they expanded.
