A widow lives on a farm with her two daughters. One is diligent, the other is lazy. Fate leads the diligent daughter to Mrs. Holle. Here, she begins her work in Mother Huldas house, and for her efforts, Mother Hulda rewards the young woman by showering her with gold and luck. She becomes Golden Marie. Her lazy sister, out of envy and malice, wants to do the same, but she can't bring herself to work. For this, she is also supposed to receive a reward from Mrs. Holle. She becomes Pitch Marie.
