Just to give you a fairly complete timeline: Green River and Soundgarden formed at roughly the same time in the mid-80s. Green River split and its members formed Mudhoney (a more grunge sound) and Mother Love Bone (a more glam sound with Stone and Jeff of Pearl Jam). Mother Love Bone frontman Andy Wood shared an apartment with Chris Cornell at this time and they really clicked with their songwriting, until Andy died of a heroin overdose. Stone and Jeff then formed Pearl Jam, intentionally moving towards a different sound in their new singer, and Cornell wanted to work with them to pay tribute to their lost friend and bandmate. Pearl Jam's Ten and Temple of the Dog were recorded at roughly the same time.

The Soundgarden song “Outshined” was Cornell feeling like every time he wrote something, Andy Wood was already working on something better. Like back to the drawing board. He was feeling outshined

Solid review.. you're more right than wrong with this. Andrew Wood (lead singer) dies only a few days before the release of what would be their major album. They were very well respected in Seattle. Andrew was good friends with Chris Cornell - roommates I believe. Yes, this song was written sometime between 1988 and 1990. Andrew Wood died of a speedball overdose (heroin and cocaine). Definitely close to a hair metal band than a "grunge" band. They're associated with PJ because Jef Ament and Stone Gossard were key members of Mother Love Bone, and after Andrew Wood died, they wanted to continue making music. Stone started playing with someone named McCready who convinced Stone to reconnect with Ament. They gave their good friend, Jack Irons (at the time of Chilii peppers) a demo of their recordings in hope he'd join their band. He was having health issues (i think arthritis) so he passed the tape to a friend in San Diego - Eddie, who wrote a 3 song rock opera while surfing one afternoon after he heard the demo. Dave Krusen was an audition for drums, and the rest is history. Temple of the Dog is a tribute band to Andrew Wood. Chris Cornell just kept writing songs to cope with the death, and asked the rest of Temple of the dog members to join him for a tour. While recording, Cornell was having troubles figuring out the vocal parts to Hunger Strike (temple of the dogs biggest hit) and thats when Eddie (still relatively new to the "Seattle scene") sung a few low notes. After that, Cornell loved it, invited him on the song, also on a couple more songs, and the rest is history. Mother Love Bone is good, there's definitely better songs (in my opinion) than stargazer (still a good song). Star dog champion, Crown of Thorns, Bone China, This is Shangrila, Holy roller and so on. Good reviews 🤙

Andy Wood and Stone Gossard are/were friends of mine. Mother Love Bone came out of the band called Malfunkshun. It had Andy Wood singing. Stone on guitar and Jeff Ament on bass. Both later in Pearl Jam. Stone wrote most of the music with Andy singing. When Andy died Stone and Jeff formed a new band and needed a singer. Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons new Eddie Vedder in California. He came up to audition with Stone and Jeff and before Pearl Jam was even a thing Chris Cornell had him sing in Temple Of The Dog. Because he was in the studio next door to Stone and Jeff. Chris and Andy were great friends/roomates and Chris was in studio making a tribute album for Andy. I met both Andy and Chris at the Evergreen State College. After the Temple Of The Dog project was over, Eddie passed his audition with Stone and Jeff and Mookie Blaylock was formed. That's the name of a famous basketball player. Mookie didn't want the band to use his name so they changed their name to Pearl Jam. But their 1st album was named 10 after Mookie's jersey number. So yeah, Pearl Jam has two of Mother Love Bone's members in it. As a musician up hear in the Seattle area, I can say for a fact that we're all pretty bandyamorous. I personally have played in up to 4 bands at once and we all know each other. Especially in the mid to late 80s into the mid 90s. This song is a cool one but it's not that representative of most of MLB stuff. They usually rocked a bit more. It was like Grunge but Andy was a total Glam Rocker guy. It was an interesting mix and I loved them.

Mother Love Bone is a grunge band. Andrew Wood was one of the Godfathers of grunge There's another band he play before Mother Love Bone in the band called malfunction good ass band!! It's just sad because a lot of people don't really pay attention to Andrew Wood. He was one of the best singers ever!! You know in Seattle grunge a lot of people always talk about Layne Staley,Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Kurt Cobain. But Andrew Wood was one of the best singers gone too soon but never forgotten!! And thank you for reacting to Mother Love Bone!!🤘🤘

I like Andrew woods voice a lot more than eddies . It’s all based on preference , but there’s an certain feeling flowing from his voice that can’t be replicated. Many people compare mlb to 80s hair metal bands. I don’t listen to any of those 80s bands mentioned in the video, not because I hate them by any means. There’s just a certain type of sincerity that comes from mlb and the album apple that’s unmatched. I totally understand what you are saying though, this specific song has some “The Ballad of Jayne” vibes. Apple by MLB is worth listening too. You get that sincerity that you hear from 70’s glam rock like , David Bowie, Queen, and T. rex and you also hear the transition into “grunge”. Chloe Dancer/Crown of thorns by MLB is one of the best ballads written. Please check it out if you get a chance even if it’s just for yourself .

And to think most of the music for Ten was supposed to be the next MLB album. Even Flow, Alive, Black, Once, among others would sound totally different. If you want to listen to 2 songs with the same music. Listen to Footsteps by Pearl Jam and Times of Trouble by Temple of the Dog. Written by Stone Gossard

He was strongly influenced by that era. They were not Pearl Jam. It was recorded, I think around 1989. You called it correctly. The lyrics, Andrew's presence were greatly different than Eddie Vedder's. I'm sure some of the appeal that they were going for was monster ballad. I wouldn't really put this song in the same category as Poison. Andy was in a league of his own. Also remember that he was only 24 at the time of death. He could have been 19-23 when he wrote it.

Others have given a good overview of the connections. They were a late 80s band, and their music had that feel, but you can also hear them mixing it up a little to kind of move away from that sound. I’ve listened to most of their songs, and I’m honestly not a fan. I don’t know if they would have completely shifted to a more grunge sound, or would have faded away like most of the 80s hair bands, with Andrew Woods death we will never know. But from the ashes of that tragedy two beautiful things were born, Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam, and I feel Mother Love Bone for fans of those is the origin story.

I didnt think anyone reacted to this band. I was already 30 when this came out, worked with a bunch of guys in their early 20s. They turned me onto this. Reminded me of my early 70s experiences. Seattle music was pretty fresh for a little while. Glam rock mixed with early grunge. A little different but it's got those hair metal vibes in it.

Andrew Wood started with his brother in Malfunkshun. He left to begin Mother Love Bone. He died of a herion overdose just before their first album, Apple, was released. He was Chris Cornell's room mate. When Andy died, Chris formed Temple of the Dog to write a tribute album to him. Alice in Chains, 'Would' is also about Andy. Two Mother Love Bone members went on to join Pearl Jam. This is the slowest MLB song.

This band kicked off the grunge movement that's why there linked to pearl jam, sound garden, aic, basically the whole Seattle movement candle boxs far behind was written for the singer. Temple of the dog was formed as a tribute for the singer! The singer passed away! Very talented band! Great review btw!

I'm glad you ended up getting lost in the song but let me fill you in a few facts. Andrew Wood the lead singer past away a week before their debut album Apple came out. He was best friends with Chris Cornell they were roommates. Mother Love Bone brought interest of major labels to Seattle and Sound Garden Nirvana and many others blew up. Temple of the Dogs was formed with Sound Garden and the remaining members of MLB and Eddie Vedder in tribute to Andy Say Hello to Heaven was a song Chris wrote for him and references Stargazer and Xanna which the original Stargazer was about ie; his Andy's love and 2 of the members of MLB joined with Eddie Vedder to form Pearl Jam and on a side note Alice in Chains Jerry Contrell wrote the song Would on AIC album Dirt dedicated to Andy and Layne was destroyed when Andy died. He was a major force in the beginning of Grunge which none of them even like to be referred to that FYI. Andrew was a force of nature. You should look up some info on him. Actually there is an autobiographical called Malfunkshun you might be interested in. And yes I took offense to the beginning of you video but still watched it all anyway. Also check out Cloe Dancer.

Got to see them twice: a skate rink and our hometown festival, Bumbershoot. Andrew was a treasure. Song was about love and kicking a habit. Real life it failed. Juliet was his girls teddy bear name I believe. Wish they had a chance at more. Good days and great but sad memorable music. Wish I had a Delorean to go back in time to see it all again. Yeah, this is one of MLB’s ballads. For more of their power-driven songs, with more of a hint (instrumentally, not vocally) as to what Pearl Jam would turn out to start off like, you should check out some of these: Captain Hi-Top, Come Bite The Apple, Stardog Champion, Mindshaker Meltdown, and Mr. Danny Boy. Yes, Andrew Wood, aka Landrew the Love Child, passed away right before the band’s one and only full-length album was released. He was the lead singer and occasional keyboard player. The entire Temple Of The Dog album started out as a tribute to him by Chris Cornell and members of MLB. Eddie Vedder met them during those sessions, sang backup on some songs, and even a duet with Chris. MLB alumni Stone Gossard & Jeff Ament liked his approach so much, they hired Ed as the frontman of their new band. The result, Pearl Jam!

However, Stargazer doesn't show case that, as you did mention in this review. It’s definitely a power ballad but with a Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith vibe. There’s something different about this one for sure. Anyway I get gut wrenching feeling when I hear this song knowing what happened to their singer and at the young age of 24. I’m 26 and feel like my life is just getting started so for him to die that young is extremely sad. Rest In Peace to Andrew Wood.

Pearl Jam diehard here, and I just can't handle this glam-rock sound. My prediction, had Andy lived, and Mother Love Bone had stayed together, they would have had one album with minor success, and then they would have broken up. They just didn't have the recipe for what was coming down the music pipeline.

No offense, but there is a huge difference between this song, “Stargazer” and Bon Jovi. Stargazer, musically, is much closer to Pearl Jam’s “Black”, than it is to any 80’s hair metal power ballad. However, Mother Love Bone (had the singer Andy Wood not died before the album was released), could have been the figurative “missing link” between Hair Metal and Grunge. Stone Gossard(guitarist and the main songwriter for Mother Love Bone & Pearl Jam) had a very unique sound to his songwriting and chords he used. To me, Stone Gossard & Jeff Ahment (the guys from Mother Love Bone who went on to form Pearl Jam, & previously of Green River) were more influential and copied in the 90’s, than anything Nirvana did. Several songs on Pearl Jam’s 1st album Ten, were songs Mother Love Bone had been working on between the finishing of recording their debut album “Apple” and it’s release, which Andy Wood died on the eve of. Pearl Jam “Ten” to me, still sounds like a Mother Love Bone album, with a different singer & no piano. Mother Love Bone’s influences were rooted in the 70’s, not the 80’s. No offense to you, but it seems you have a very limited context to songs that aren’t “Rock”? The “Power Ballad” is something pretty specific. Stargazer isn’t that. The Mother Love Bone song “Crown of Thorns” would probably tick more “Power Ballad” boxes, but it’s also the song Eddie Vedder & Pearl Jam chose to cover, for what that is worth? Is David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” a “power ballad”? How about Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”? How about Aerosmith’s “Dream On”? How about Elton John’s “Sorry seems to be the Hardest Word”? How about Alice Cooper’s “The Ballad of Dwight Fry”? These are the influences that Mother Love Bone was drawing on and is very apparent in their music. Those are also all AMAZING songs that the artists created for what would appear to be purely artistic reasons, as opposed to being something they were “forced” to create & play for the strict monetary purpose of pleasing a very specific demographic of their fan bases. Just saying.
