lol this is about ratatouille ana = alfredo/linguini Panting at the start at the song is alfredo, cooking as his body and limbs are being dragged- like a puppet under remy's control "I'll be god, I'll fake god" basically remy cooking while "faking" being alfredo "Hold my head under the bath and breathe away , Slit my wrists and watch that blood evaporate" based on cooking, whilst dealing the stress of being caught "Being this Godly can't be good for Ana's safety, Ana hear me" obviously in remy's pov, being godly as in the coincidence of being able to control alfredo through his hair, whilst also being able to be hidden under the hat. "Ante up and play that God a poker game" basically how remy is gambling and risking it all just to cook "Walk away with all our little God's spare change" remy wondering his benefit from being able to cook "Oh, Ana, I'll be with you still . You are the angel that I couldn't kill" remy's thoughts in the back of his head, of what if he didn't even need to use a human to cook, what if he could just be a rat in his sneaky little rat body cooking and being content with life "Hop up on a cloud and watch the world decay , Ana on my shoulders and we'll laugh away" also remy's thoughts of being able to not use alfredo's body, also adding in how alfredo would benefit too "Ana hear me, Ana baby, I'm not crazy" this is actually in alfredo's pov, him trying to explain to collete tatou (his goth gf) how he can't cook without remy and again, the killing part after is the thoughts in the back of remy's head of throwing alfredo away and just cooking on his own (btw. credits to another thread on a video discussing this! it was reallly sick and i wanted to adapt it into the lyrics)

This song really does strike me as a song about anorexia, the breathing in the beginning reminds me of all the exercise, playing god/ not eating to feel in control. “I couldn’t kill”, it’s an addiction, not eating, loosing weight, you can’t stop. And it feels like a good thing

I haven’t been in the community in years, but in the anorexia community I remember we used to find each other by saying “pro Ana”. We would talk about anorexia as if it was an actual person. Saying she was our friend. She is seen as a caring friend. So I thought this song was about Ana, the person that is the embodiment of anorexia that is cherished as a friend.

Personal view on this song I see a person who fakes happiness and their personality everyday, but sometimes has a breakdown, the breakdowns become more and more often and it seems like they always break down in front of Ana. But who is Ana? Ana is themselves, is the part of them who accepts their feelings, the part who keeps them in control. Man, I could write a book inspired by this song.

Knowing that members from Mother Mother have struggled with body image and/or eating disorders means this song really comes from a very personal place. Gives me chills. For those who don’t know, “Ana” or “pro-Ana” was an early 2000s site that would leave incredibly harmful tips on how to starve yourself and especially made a lot of young people victims of anorexia. I haven’t been able to find much new information about the sites but correct me if I’m wrong, pro-ana sites might still be a thing out there. When Mother Mother was just “Mother” a song called “fat kids” (you can still find it on KZfaq) was made which you can kind of connect to this song, like the song before this song. Anyway these lyrics feel and sound incredibly ill. The obsession with “ana” and the careless way to “play god”, as in, starve yourself to almost near death and yet still be daring enough to keep pushing again the slim line that is between life and death.

I think the best thing about this song is that it was written without a meaning, so it’s left to us to interpret it and we can all interpret as different and it won’t be “wrong” per say. People can relate even if it isn’t specifically written how they interpret it. It’s amazing, I love this song

Im aware that this song is just a bunch of words scrambled together, but here’s a story I created based off the song: A serial killer, let’s call him Max, falls in love with one of his latest victims named Ana, and revives her, almost feeling like he’s playing God. Max feels horrible for killing the new love of his life, and tries to kill himself by slitting his wrists. As he bleeds, Ana finds him and helps him heal. Max, already being mentally unstable, sees Ana as an angel and promises to always be with her still. Ana, who is somehow not aware Max had tried to kill her in the past, smiles and tells him she returns his feelings. And so a few days later, Max leaves her in his house as he goes out and looks at the world around him, daydreaming about how one day he and Ana are going to sit on a cloud and watch the world decay. While Max is gone, Ana goes and looks around Max’s house because she’s bored and stumbles upon the basement. Ana opens up the door, and not only does she see the dead bodies of many people, she see Max dragging in another body and trying to dispose of the evidence on the same table he revived Ana on. Ana freaks out and Max tries to calm her down as he keeps saying, “Ana baby, I’m not crazy!” Max keeps proclaiming his love for Ana, telling her that she’s the angel he couldn’t kill. I’m not sure how to end this story, so the ending is up to you guys, I guess!

I don’t know why but I always imagined this song as Ana being a little girl who died and is constantly haunting her parent who is going insane wondering if she’s actually alive or if it’s in their head. However she died, it was directly the parents fault, so the guilt also is pulling at their conscious. I hear the line “Ana save me” but also “Ana’s safety” and think that they’re constantly thinking about saving Ana, but also is begging for her to leave them alone. The transition to I’ll be god, to I’ll fake god is insinuating that they used to think they were in control of their life until she slowly overtook it and is playing God over them. The other lines talk about their memories with Ana, as well as realizing how much they were possessive over Ana. At the end they slowly die due to blood loss from attempting to physically cut Ana off from them.

My honest opinion on the interpretation of these lyrics. The band may have said the song has no meaning. It was designed to have no meaning, but like with all forms of media in out lives we find meaning within it, and sometimes that meaning helps us to realize what we feel and that we arent alone. Stop shaming others because the think the song talks about anorexia- that's how it speaks to them and that's valid.

Yeah, people can obviously interpret it however they want, and the people getting angry over it need to stop. But also, there are people still arguing that the song was purposefully made about anorexia, which is false too. I think people just need to understand that the song wasn’t made about anorexia BUT people can still interpret it how they please!! Like gosh darn it doesn’t hurt anyone that someone thinks it’s about an ED!
@user-we4kf5xm5u3 жыл бұрын
I have no issues at all with people with anorexia relating to this (I also suffered from Anorexia). However, I don’t like it when people try to make it about EDs telling others it’s about EDs. It’s like one of Mozart’s pieces, to be interpreted by the listener to relate to it. Also, to the people with EDs... @@user-we4kf5xm5u they're not saying its about ed's theyre just saying thats how they interpret it- art is up for interpretation, and mother mother has come out and said "We didn't have anything in mind instead of this entity of ana, but seeing the meaning some people have put to this song, I am glad to see that it really wrote itself in such a powerful way." ive never heard people say its about ed's ive only seen "This is my personal interpretation" and mother mother is glad that this song comes across in this manner. The only thing ive heard people say about this song having to be about ed's is saying that since the song "I go Hungry" is clearly about a battle with an eating disorder, they think that Oh Ana, though not meant to be a song about ed's, is a song about ed's because it was written by the same person and perhaps just a train of thought that tied in with their ed.

Everyone is saying that it isn’t about anorexia and I don’t see why it matters that it’s not. If you have anorexia and you relate to this song even if it’s not specifically about anorexia there’s nothing wrong with that. I know that I connect with a lot of songs for reasons that are not the original intent of the artists. Songs can be interpreted in many different ways and none of the interpretations are “wrong” just because it wasn’t intended. If people want to think it’s about anorexia or a person named Ana I don’t see why we can’t just let them think that and why people in the comments need to shame them and call them stupid for finding meaning in this song.

Trigger warning; mention of self harm and just overall a long comment- I love this song so much, but it makes me tear up every time I hear it (I’ve only heard of this song recently) and I feel so bad listening to it because my sister has anorexia and it just reminds me of the pain she has to go through. When I first saw the title, I thought of how “Ana” is seen as the shortened version of saying anorexia and when I heard it, this is immediately how I interpreted the song. I just try to be there for her. She’s actually voluntarily going into treatment as of recently, but I still get sad when I hear this song. Honestly, when you said, “references people with anorexia trying to be in control, and even after recovery, Ana is still there, she always will be, and she just can’t be killed”, I can relate to that in my own way without the context of anorexia because I struggle with an addiction to self harm. Every. Single. Day. And I know if I’m ever willing to recover and get past relapses, that it’s still going to be there and that I’ll always have those urges. I think it’s best if I avoid this song even though I love it lol.

i know this reply is a year late, however i do think i have an answer! the chord structure of this song is very unpredictable. it doesn't follow a regular model, it switches between major and minor keys, and i think it has a couple of meter changes as well (ive only listened a couple of times, but i believe it goes from 4/4 to 3/4 on "ana's safety." that's why it sounds so awkward switching back to the lighter acoustics. it goes from four beats a measure to two measures of three (either that or a measure of 6/4), which is naturally a jarring transition because our brains are accustomed to counting things in fours (even if you don't realize it, almost every song you listen to is in 4/4, so you expect everything to end on a nice multiple of four, and it sounds almost wrong for it not to). so your brain expects the "ana's safety" section to last EIGHT beats, not SIX. i hope that was informative and not just confusing haha

How I interpret the song (this is just how I hear it, whether or not it’s actually intended to be meant like that): Ana is the personification of a person’s mental disorder. People who self-harm often feel as though they have no control over their lives, and some people feel as though controlling their body is the one thing that gives them power. This most often takes the form of eating disorders. So the person is essentially trying to “play god” over their body, despite their health rapidly deteriorating. “You are the angel that I couldn’t kill” references that the person sees their disorder as some thing they don’t have control over (them not being able to kill it) but not seeing it as harmful, despite it being clearly so (calling it an angel). When the lyrics cut off at “being this godly can’t be good for-“ before immediately changing the tone to be more desperate, it shows how quickly their rational thoughts are suppressed by “Ana”.

How about we just let people have their own belief when it comes to what this song means? Even if they think it’s about Anorexia, depression, whatever. The song itself has no actual meaning since the artist said that they just put random words together, so why not just give it meaning? Many songs have multiple meanings made by fans that the artist didn’t intend. It doesn’t hurt anyone.

i think the song is about the singer recognizing that there is a true god who is fully good and they decided to fake god and arent fully good. Ana is the sin that they follow and can't get rid of.
