Darren Aronofsky has said this: Jennifer - Mother Nature Javier - God Ed Harris - Adam Michelle - Eve The Gleesons - Cain and Abel The House - Garden of Eden
@DonnaBrooks6 ай бұрын
There's more than that, but you should have put SPOILERS at the top and left blank spaces so people didn't start reading them without warning! Click READ MORE for more on the symbolism used in the film..... 1. I think you are mistaken about the HOUSE being the Garden of Eden. The house is EARTH ITSELF. His office, where the crystal, which was the ONLY thing HIM told them not to touch, was the actual Garden of Eden. That's why, after they broke the crystal (the forbidden fruit), he sealed up that office so they could never get in there again. This was the expulsion of Adam & Eve from the Garden. But they STILL had access to all the rest of the House (Earth). 2. When the sink breaks & water starts spraying everywhere & Mother screams at them to get out, all the people leave the house for a while, just like the Great Flood in Genesis wiping out almost all of humanity. Almost. The survivors continue to multiply & they return in even greater numbers than before. 3. The baby is Jesus. 4. HIM's first book was the Old Testament. His second book was the New Testament. 5. God is much "older" than Nature because God is eternal, whereas Nature had a beginning. That's why there's such an obvious age difference in the lead characters.

If you like to think, figure out symbolism and see film making techniques: cinematography, sound editing, etc. then you would appreciate the movie. Much of the film is communicated through imagery, facial expressions and body language so you have to pay attention. If you like to relax and have fun watching a movie, this isn't the movie for that.

@xy Interesting, I didn't pick up on the environmental angle. To me it was a very slow-burn home invasion thriller, where the protagonist gets gaslighted by her partner that the home invaders are, like, totally cool! Honestly the whole religious aspect of the film completely flew over my head on the first viewing, which is a little embarassing because they aren't exactly subtle 😅

Spoilers - It's retelling of bible. HIm is God the creator or the poet. Mother is Mother Nature. The house is eden/earth. Ed Harris & Michelle pFeiffer are adam & eve. Their sons are Cain and Abel. All the people coming to the house are us - and how we are wrecking the environment. And god keeps favoring man over the earth and forgiving them of their sins while the earth is destroyed wrecked by selfish people. Of course, it's aronofsky so it plays out like an acid flashback. Heavy on symbolism, and a bit heavy handed.

Korey's interpretation seems to be the correct one. Watch the credits, and look closely at Javier Bardem's character's name, there is something unique about it compared to everyone else's names. Instead of being so cryptic, I wish Korey would just put up a disclaimer near the end of the review, stating "Spoiler", and then proceed from there to talk about what well known story this movie is referencing, and how it is referencing it. Right now I share Martin's frustration, in that it seems as if Korey is deliberately being enigmatic with his description in order to hang it over our heads that he has some special insight that we don't.

I think the best part of this movie is that it can be open to interpretation. My mother saw it as a dark satire of what fame does does to people. I saw it as an allegory for Christianity (Bardem representing God and his poem being the Bible). Martin saw it as a poem from the point of view of the spouse of a creative person. Korey saw it as a retelling of a story. It means something different to everyone.

I'm really surprised Martin didn't know what Korey was talking about when he said it's a retelling of a story from the Bible. I feel like the metaphors in this movie were SOOO obvious from the get-go. Javier Bardem represents God and Jennifer Lawrence represents Mother Earth or Mother Nature in this, then Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer represent Adam & Eve, and their sons are obviously Cain & Abel. It beats you over the head with it repeatedly throughout the movie. And btw, I really did not enjoy this movie, it was like "Metaphors 101". Maybe I'd be impressed with this concept if it was a short story/short film by a high school student, but since it came from a 48-year-old filmmaker who's made WAY better movies before, I was super unimpressed with it.
@TheBackOfTheClassroom7 жыл бұрын
Tim R To be fair Korey said " a retelling of a story". The reality is it's several stories and metaphors and characters. I saw the movie yesterday and watched the review today and noticed this. Korey is right, but his wording is misleading. And I agree, it clobbers you over the head in allegories.
@PurpleFilm9227 жыл бұрын
Tim R I actually believe J.Law is probably god herself. Javier Bardem character could be interpreted as both Adam n eve or just humanity in general. We love him/her and want his love but in the end it is still never enough. I mean that's just one way I could look at it.
@lumosnox227 жыл бұрын
Tim R I'm not religious, i don't believe in religion, I've never read the bible, and i don't care about bible stories. So if you're not familiar with them, like myself, then yes, the bible references might go over your head or might not be very clear to you. Those metaphors might not be clear to everyone.
@toa_tahu95827 жыл бұрын
I mean that kind of makes it worse. People who read the Bible may feel the allegories are too on the nose, to the point where it gets annoying/ feels unoriginal. but people who don't know or care for the Bible that much will just not get anything because the film is too reliant on the source material.
@KimmimaruSai7 жыл бұрын

movie of the year for me, Bardem ("God") welcomes humanity to his house ("Earth") and ignores his wife ("Mother Nature") and they take his word and generosity for granted and shit all over everything he gives them, he still continues to love them because the Christian God is a God that desires to be loved, mother nature gives birth to jesus and they consume the baby (blood and body of christ) and the so she begins the apocalypse (destroying the house) and God restarts the earth and starts over

As far as I can tell from the reviews and trailer, that is it, along with environmental themes. However, I am with Korey, this movie was promoted badly and put into a theater where people go to watch talking yellow thumbs (minions) and a shapeshifting clown (IT). Darren Aronofsky and Paramount Pictures need to be more forthcoming. I heard that the press screenings had "cheat sheets" which contained some explanations about the film. Those screenings were free, mine would not be.

Also the whole in the floor represents the opening of hell. At the beginning, the hole bleeds down into the cellar and creates a larger opening. Then at the end of the film it starts to burn around the edges. Jennifer also represents Lucifer as the first angel, not Satan. mother! turns 5 today Still a very divisive film by Darren Aronofsky making him very polarized, he still has a unique style using heavy grain filter and handheld camera movement Many will find it fascinating others will be turned off by it It's still one of his most daring efforts, I appreciated the trailer didn't give away too much Then it was surprising to learn it's actually from the Bible Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem give such genuine raw performances as Mother Nature and God It gets so crazy by the end too by showing every facet of humanity good and bad on the brink of collapse Definitely provokes in a lot of places with countless religious allegories involving creating a paradise, not starting over, and keeping our own loved ones to each other It's a shame the reviews (particularly Cinemascore giving it an F) hurt Lawrence's relationship with Aronofsky leading to tepid box office numbers; she even ended up winning a Razzie award Still it tested her ability the most physically and psychologically as an actress
@aureliaansah14627 жыл бұрын
Korey seems to be right. The biggest complaint I've seen from critics about this movie, is that the biblical allegory & social commentary on Humankind's treatment of the Earth, is as subtle as a brick. Apparently, Martin missing the following is an exception rather than the rule (amongst film critics). SPOILERS:- Javier Bardem is God (The Old Testament) - portrayed as the jealous Creator we're aware of in the Book. Jennifer Lawrence is Mother Nature - helplessly watching her house become more & more decrepit & misused. The house is Earth - wearing away, weakening & decaying due to neglect & mistreatment. And the strangers represent Humanity - disregarding & maltreating the house that they are guests in. The New Testament is introduced later on in the film with the birth of the baby. Subsequently, what happens to that baby is supposed to symbolise the zealotry of Humanity & the sheer noxious religious fanaticism that can pervade throughout societies. Finally, the elixir drink Jennifer is seen taking could be seen to signify self-medication, which is a coping mechanism that allows her to continue on without taking agency or any form of action; but instead to just bear witness & react in horror.

I grew up with Mother. Father too. Anyway..at 11:09 - 11:58.. I agree. Misleading marketing can be harmful. It Comes at Night disappointed quite a bit of people, even though it was good. It is kind of like a KZfaq video with a clickbait thumbnail or title. People come in only to find the video does not feature what is advertised, and they get pissed. Maybe it would have helped the movie if they did add some kind of monster or creature..maybe put in a werewolf or something. The werewolf could have been what "it" was. That way..they could market it as a horror movie even better and also put something in that rewards people who wanted to see some kind of monster. Or how about just have Pennywise show up..so when people ask what comes at night, people can say "IT comes at night". HAHAHA

The problem with this movie is it had too many metaphors. It had The creation of man/Adam and Eve, The Great Flood, male artist egotism taking muse from young submissive women, anxiety, the dangers of idol worship, human killing the Earth, dysfunctional relationships, and The Giving Tree. If you didn't get the metaphors then this movie comes off as pretentious and confusing. If you were a keen eyed viewer, then you're either gonna appalled the movie for using all of them to their full potential in a coherent way, or feel overwhelmed and bored.

Black Swan, even if you didn't "get" it was still enjoyable on a superficial level. As someone who "got it", it was still stupid and a clusterfuck of a movie.

I'm with Martin. I graduated university with a top of my class GPA and I've been in leadership positions at work for the last six years so I'm not an idiot. The types of movies are the definition of pretentious to me and that doesn't mean I'm labeling anyone who enjoys these types of movies. You do you and you what what you like, it's not the place of anyone to judge. However, I really will never understand why people love or even enjoy these types of movies. I don't want to have to do the legwork of figuring out what the movie is and what it means, the director is supposed to be doing that. I'm simply there to be entertained and escape from the real world where I do have to work my mind. I left The Witch feeling exactly the way Martin described. I could not figure out if I enjoyed it or not but then I realized that if I have to figure out if I enjoyed it then I didn't enjoy it.

Yeah, I'm with Martin on this one. Agreed with Korey on A Ghost Story but not this.

Once Cain got hit with the mark on his forehead, it clicked (Catholic school student, here) and then the movie was much easier to follow. I should’ve caught with the rib missing, tho.

I hate artsy movies where the director tries to be all intelligent, like they really trying to say something relevant through their film, and no one knows what the fuck they're trying to say (in the film) but them. But i respect Korey's review here, it sounds like hes just being honest.

"Mother" was a fine and artsy movie. But as far as horror-haven't been so disappointed in a long time. I'm very bored of art movies pretending to be horror movies. I love them once in a while, but I really want a unique, disturbing movie not based on a book or a remake, good luck huh? LOL! I was hoping for a horror movie-I got a big movie about religious allegories. Yeah. It's a good movie for sure and I appreciate how different it was. However, when I go to a horror movies-I'd like to be scared and I'd like a movie that makes sense. I think I'll re-watch "Black Swan" and "The Witch." Both awesome horror movies with art-house themes.

The moment that I understood that this movie was a retelling of the Bible from Mother earth Pov was when the Oldest kid kills the youngest. I went to Jewish school my whole life and we used to read the Torah and the rabbi used to explain to me some passages and stuff around the time I started studying for my bat mitzva , and that part hit me as Cain killing Abel. After that, you don't need to know much about the subject to draw the parallels.

Good movie, subtle, captivating, creepy and very intriguing. A bit twisted. I loved it.

I'm with Korey. It's 100% a retelling of that certain story. You can read more into it, but it's clear as day what this movie is.

Hahaha, the opinions on this film is all over the place! If I can squeeze it into my schedule, I'll see it in the theater (I doubt it, tho). Most likely I'll catch it when it comes to Netflix.

interesting you should mention a "Dark Dr Seuess" book, or a fable or fairytale for kids made into a dark abstract adult film. One of the inspirations for "mother!" was "The Giving Tree" a kid's book about a tree that loves a boy and gives up all of itself just to please that little boy all the way through his life. This was an inspiration for "mother" herself. So it is in a way, a literal kids book made into a dark allegory for adults. You're right bang on the money! You got this. It is also the bible and a nod to rosemary's baby as it's about the devilish deal for the price of fame (much like Guy, Rosemary's husband in Rosemary's Baby does in that film).

They said “movie”. Don’t know what TLJ was supposed to be but it sure isn’t a movie. It might have just been Rian Johnson trying to tell a joke

i personally am glad a film like this is in the mainstream. In fact, it is like the old days prior to the modern advent of VHS and home entertainment. Wild films like these with crazy ideas hosting major actors came to theatres and were marketed as such.

I agree with Korey. The film reminded me a lot of several Polanski thrillers that are more unsettling than conventional horror. And it’s a clever reimagination of a well known (especially in western society) tale. I liked this film, but felt that it could have been much better with a more talented lead actress. Lawrence couldn’t do the lifting required of the role. There wasn’t enough commitment or conviction. She was miscast, and in several scenes, she slightly resembled Cate Blanchett... who I thought would have been a much better actor for her character. It was the only problem I had with the film, especially for such a prominent role. And I think it hurts the film. I also think they film will connect with a more film literate audience who has seen enough films that don’t rely on conventional narrative and are comfortable with ambiguity or films that don’t tie all the loose ends.

Mother! is much more than one allegory, it's almost a blank slate for its audience to project their life onto. It gets super crazy, but it really is like a conversation between artist and audience.
