A Chick Called Albert

A Chick Called Albert

4 жыл бұрын

I had to do something to scare away the crows in my garden. The Next day I got a surprise...Was this Mother Nature telling me something?
Dear Animal Friends... What demanding times. Let's take care of one another.
I am working hard on some wonderful new stories to bring you moments of joy during these challenging days
Please be safe out there
ps: The unfinished version of this video was uploaded by accident a few weeks ago. Here is the finished one. I hope you like it :)
I have been taking care of a sweet Jackdaw (a small crow species).
He was brought to me when he was still very young.
The vet living next to my sister had heard about me and thought that maybe I was willing to give this little fellow a chance... although the vet thought that he wouldn't make it.
-----
Little birds that need help are in need of the following:
Note: Although you might like taking care of a baby bird, often they stand a better chance of survival if taken to an animal rescue centre near you. By the way, thank's for caring :)
(never give any animal that needs your help cow milk!)
Warmth:
Make sure it is just the right temperature by looking at the bird: is it trying to get closer to the heat source (too cold) or away from it (too hot). Watch out... too hot is also dangerous. A bottle filled with warm water might work, or a lamp.
Safety:
Make sure that the bird is safe from pets or other animals and children.
Food and water:
Most baby birds will not drink water (parent birds can't get it to them either) even a little bit could drown them.
They get their moisture from wet food.
Like the bird in this video, high quality dog food soaked in water works really well.
Good luck

I have a deep respect for crows, and part of it stems from a tragic experience I faced during high school. My younger sister brought home a fledgling and our mom would not let us keep it in the house in fear of it bringing diseases, so I had to leave it outside that night. This was in winter time (Southern California, USA), so while it was not rainy or snowy, it would be in the 40's - low 50's F temp range. I tried to make it comfortable as best I could before leaving it in a bush outside where it would at least be safe from predators (not that we had many in that neighborhood, but still), but I was attached when it nestled into me as I held it. I cried myself to sleep that night, and when I found it the next morning, the little guy was dead as I expected, having not survived the cold. I spent the next few days at school in a wavering depression, the likes of which I would never wish upon anyone. To this day whenever I think of that experience with that young crow, I break down in tears. To see someone else successfully raise a fledgling lightens the load and I hope that if given the chance, I will succeed in doing the same, but nothing can reprieve me of the guilt I carry for not having helped that one in the past.

"a week later I hoped he would recognise me" one of the most poignant moments of my entire life was when I met a dog after eight years. this dog lived in my neighborhood when I was six, and then we moved to a different continent. and now there I was, eight years later, walking through the gate to a frozen dog, standing there absolutely stunned for a whole minute, not even blinking, and then - then he started whining and crying and pressed himself to me and didn't leave my side for two the whole two days I was there, not even to eat even though he was usually a bit of a glutton. It broke my heart and was beautiful at the same time and I will never forget it

The parents do calls to let the chicks know it's feeding time. Which prompts them to open wide and consume whatever is shoved down their beak. Crows are pretty intelligent, so you can basically teach them a word or sound to meen the same thing. Which seems to be what he did.

We adopted a wild crow, named her Poe. She was found in the woods crying after falling from her nest, and her leg was broken and twisted backwards. She was such a sweetheart. She'd fly over to us and preen/groom our hair, talk vocally to us, and even snuggle with our cats. Little angel. Unfortunately after three years of keeping her, she fell from a high up perch and broke some of her ribs. She was never a good flyer due to her backwards leg messing up her tail feathers. She died shortly after, and my dad was devastated. They are such intelligent and social birds, that I honestly viewed her as a little sister.

I have two pairs of wild native Black Ducks that hatch their babies in my backyard every year. We have a swimming pool which they take great advantage of. Every year my hubby and I collect the ducklings out of the pool and hubby walks them and their mothers down to the lake. We do it because of the cars and the crows. Our daughter gets to cuddle each duckling before they go and she loves it! However… I still feed our two local crows (even though they once poached a duckling), George and Jodie. They have as much right to live as all other birds. I also feed our Magpies, Magpie Larks, Butcher Birds and Wagtails!

Don't forget we're all one. Only our body makes the difference. A being without awareness can not excist. A crow does know how to mate just like you. A crow knows how to eat and to poo. See? This creature is just as aware as you. But they are birds and don't need to be enslaved like humans. I bet if humans took all crows and made them home-breed crow... these birds would maybe act like a complete human (except the body is different). All animals and even the smalles have awareness. Greta Seshat This old man used to go to the pond behind our high school (it was across the street from a senior living place) and feed crows. He had one who everyone swore was his friend for over 15 years. I’m not sure of their lifespan but apparently that was a big deal. This crow would sit on the bench with him and eat while he had his own lunch. They had lunch together every Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. When this old man passed away, the crow would still come and wait for him on the bench. The nurses at the senior living place took another man out there who had just lost his wife and now lived alone in the center, and he started having lunch with the crow. For a while when he’d come sit down the crow would fly off the bench but it eventually got used to him. They were both lonely and had both lost someone. So they slowly came together and became friends. It’d legit sit on his shoulder as he walked around the pond, like it did for the first man. He always called him a “naggy little bugger” because it’d peck his shoulder when it wanted him to give him seeds from his coat pocket. It was adorable and incredible how this one crow got to know and memorize both of them. Not only that, but it came to the EXACT spot on certain days. I’ve no idea how this bird distinguished between Monday and Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday. But it did. If anyone else went up to it it’d fly away like normal crows do. It was so sweet seeing this old man walking around talking to this crow on his shoulder.

This is true. I had a cat friend. He wasn't mine, he lived in the streets. I liked to play with him, he always went to visit me at my garden asking for food and I allways fed him. I called him Bleau, he was beautyful, white with blue eyes. One day he bringed a friend, it was like him. It saw me from the distance, meanwhile Bleau was with me. I thought it was a girl and then I understood, Bleau came to say "Goodbye, old friend, i'm making a familly". The last time I saw him was at night. I wasn't having a good time before Bleau wasn't my friend, I felt sad and alone, and I think Mother Nature bringed me the cat as a friend saying "He'll be your friend, you're not alone". Now I hope he's doing ok. I sometimes see him and her wife crossing the streets or in my neighbour's garden. I had very good times with him.

I too fell in love with crows. When I was living in Los Angeles, occasionally a baby crow would fall out of the nest. Me and my neighbors started feeding the babies until the mother and father could find them. They would come to feed their baby every day. While one hunted for food, the other kept watch on the shrub where we hid the baby. Crows are so beautiful and smart. For over ten years now I've fed neighborhood crows peanuts, tortillas or whatever is left over. They mostly love peanuts in the shell. They know where I live and if I don't go out to feed them at just the right time, they camp outside my bedroom to wake me up. They can be very noisy! But they are so loyal and loving. They literarlly follow me when I walk my dog. They go from tree to tree following us on our walks. They like to give little presents too. Buttons, pennies, charms, anything g shiny. Anyway, lovely story. ❤
