By the 1970s, taboos were beginning to fall from society, but many taboos were still firmly in place.
In 1977 Mother’s Finest released their now much-sought after album “Mother’s Finest” that included the song “Niggizz Can’t Sing Rock And Roll”. This title shocked and scandalized the church community:
An influential and powerful preacher read the band the riot act and so they decided to remove the song from their live act.
The song, however, exactly expressed what the group felt: The band founders wanted to create a mixture of black funk and white rock ‘n’ roll, so as to win over black and white audiences.
Sitting in Christian Wagner’s car (Christian Wagner was Rockpalast’s director from the very start) we heard their song “Fire” (1976) on the radio for the first time and we decided that this band has to perform at Rockpalast.
In the night between 15 and 16 February 1978 we received the written okay in a discotheque in Atlanta, Georgia.
The boxing match of the previous evening also involved the hopes of blacks and whites: Muhammad Ali had lost his world champion title to Leon Spinks. The spirit of the times can be best described by my experience in a bar in Atlanta where I was watching the transmission: The white “redneck audience” was glad that the loudmouthed boxer they still enjoyed calling by his slave name Cassius Clay, was beaten.
Not really the best conditions for the success of a band made up of black and white musicians.
When Mother’s Finest opened the second Rockpalast Night on 4 March 1978 at the Grugahalle in Essen, they were completely unknown in Europe.
That evening, however, they achieved cult status - a status they have kept until today.
Mother’s Finest overwhelmed the unsuspecting audience with songs typical for their style: “Give You All The Love” (1977), “Baby Love” (1977) and “Mickey’s Monkey” (1978), the last a cover of the Holland/Dozier/Holland song which Smokey Robinson & The Miracles made popular in 1969.
It is played at every concert of Mother’s Finest and shows the band’s deep roots in that kind of black music, which was mainly released by Tamala-Motown at that time.
Years full of changes followed. In 1984 the band split up.
Joyce Kennedy went on to a successful solo career. 25 years after their legendary conquest of Europe, Mother’s Finest once again performed at Rockpalast - and almost with the same line up.
On 20th July 2003 they played a concert at Satzvey Castle which included classics as well as exiting new numbers.
Both of these concerts are presented here in full!

Samstag, 5. Mai 1979 im Rosengarten, Mannheim. Vorverkauf 17,- DM, Abendkasse 19.- DM.

In Brazil in the 70s, there were some TV programs that showed the scene at the time. In one episode, among other bands, they showed Mothers Finest live playing "Give you all the love.." I was mesmerized. It was 1976 and the album with this song had been released...I ran to the store to buy mine. It's really absurd how they never got the success they deserved.

Many Funkrockers have learned from Mother's Finest... Lenny Kravitz, Prince, Tina Turner, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Guitar Watson... I heard MF the first time in the house of my friend, 1978, and he played "Dis go this way..." I was so impressed, and the rythm took me automatically over ^^ Wow, it was Dance Rock, fantastic! I've never forgot this Powerband since then, they led me to Funkrock... and it's my fav music since then ;) Specially the keyboarder and the guitarist are impressing me. MF still come every year to Germany ! :P There's a strong connection between this powerful american music and germany since this legendary Rockpalast concert.

The first time I heard about this band was when I came across one of their albums that was, sadly, in the last place it should have been-the 99-cent bargain bin at a Tower’s department store. It was about 1978, the same year I got my first decent electric guitar, a shameless Memphis Les Paul knockoff that even wore the model number LP-59! The album I got was the one with the notorious song “*****z Can’t Sang Rock-n-Roll.” That album turned me into an immediate fan. I never got to see them live, however, until I came across this KZfaq. Their live performances must have been epic, if this show is representative. The whole band was amazing, blending rock, blues, funk, jazz and gospel in a massive gumbo like no other band I’ve ever heard. The duo lead vocalists were on fire, especially Baby Jean, and the whole band was so solid and locked-in like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I think Baby Jean was even better than Aretha (RIP) Franklin. The guitarist was a real standout, but this was a total, maximum group effort. I don’t know a thing about this band except that I’m loving, loving, loving every note. Thanks so much for posting this epic live performance by a band I never got to see in person!

Watching the Rockpalast festivals at the Grugahalle was a yearly ritual. We had the TV hooked up to the PA in the rehearsal room. There were chins dropping all around. Dig that funk, accuracy of riffs and runs and Jesus what a voice on that woman! They blew us away and from then on we aspired to be like them. Never forgotten that long and loud night. 'MF' came to Charlie Goodnight's in Raleigh, NC USA regularly when I went to college there in the late '70s and we never missed their show. My friends and I got so close to the stage that their sweat was flying off and hitting us. They were very much into relating to everyone in the room, feeding off the crowd's energy, and would look you straight in the eyes and smile back at you. Mother's Finest was a powerhouse funk rock machine and could unite the room into a dancing frenzy, mellow it out, then take you right back up again and do that for three hours. Wow! Great memories, absolutely great band.

Not true really, they pushed them hard nationwide, but for the most part no one was interested outside of the South. They were hard to place as far as a format outside of rock stations. Black stations for the most part didn't play them, and they had little impact on Top 40 radio stations. An amazing live act for sure, but not every great band makes it on vinyl. That being said I still have all my LP's thru "Iron Age" which I consider to the best LP they ever did. It was also a huge flop for Atlantic.

Was in Atlanta at the Cotton Club on a weeknight and they had a local band play a song of theirs. Never heard of them and that song stop me in my tracks and had to watch them perform it. That was mid 92’/93’/94. Some where’s in that gray cloud of time…HUGE fan on them ever since

I remember the album Mother's Finest-Another Mother Further. My brother brought it home after his first Army tour in Germany in 1977. It was a rocker of an album!!

Effin great! I remember this incredible band from my youth in Sweden. Saw them in 1990 in Stockholm, the same year my youngest son was born. I'll treasure it for as long as I live.
