To help her adult son with money, the woman sold her house and moved in with him. One day when she returned from shopping, she saw the suitcase at the front door and froze in shock

Helen walked down the street, her feet barely moving. Recently, the elderly woman had received some money, so went to the nearest supermarket to buy potatoes, pasta, milk, flour, and sugar.
Although the bag had not been a burden for Helen before, it was heavy now. In her youth, working in the cowshed, she used to pull hay with a pitchfork and carry huge boxes, and buckets filled with milk or water.
But now she was over 60 years old, and age had taken its toll. Her back often ached, and her arms had weakened. So she struggled to drag the bags from the supermarket, taking slow breaks to catch her breath.
A few passersby tried to help her, including two teenage boys with school bags, a middle-aged woman, and a tall young guy. Helen politely declined their assistance with a smile. She wasn't in a rush, and these kind people seemed busy with their own affairs. So why bother them?
Helen walked slowly, not only because of the heavy bag, but also because she didn't want to go home. The place she was returning to could no longer be called her home; it was just a refuge.
She used to have a spacious, bright, and cozy house with a large kitchen. There was a vegetable garden and a carved gazebo, which her father had built. Her favorite friends and neighbors were nearby.
Helen lived well there, despite the hard work. Most of her life was spent working in the farm's cowshed, taking care of the animals. She tried her best to provide everything her son needed. She would leave before dawn and return after sunset. Her back, arms, and legs had been aching back then, but she remembered those times with nostalgia. She felt much happier than she did now.
Suddenly, November's cold rain started to fall. It came unexpected, drizzling down as if someone had opened a faucet of ice water upstairs. Helen hurried on. The rain continued to intensify, accompanied by strong winds. And it was clear to Helen that she needed to find shelter and wait it out.
The elderly woman hurried to the porch of the nearest store, seeking shelter from the rain.
Some people had already gathered there, waiting for the rain to stop. Cheerful children saw the sudden downpour as another adventure, while frowning adults were frustrated by the delay it caused.
Helen's attention was suddenly drawn to a young man standing with his back against the wall. He had bright turquoise eyes, well-defined cheekbones, and wheat-colored bangs that did not fall onto his forehead. He was a handsome young man, likely attracting the attention of many girls.
He reminded Helen so much of Mike, a guy she had known for just two days in her life, almost four decades ago. Yet, she vividly remembered every feature of his face, his scent, and the words he used to say to her.
Mike, if he were still alive, would have long forgotten their casual acquaintance. He had many other admirers, and he wasn't aware of the role he played in Helen's life.
She was born into a family of a tractor driver and a milkmaid. At just two years old, she became the eldest child, with another daughter named Angela following. Despite their modest lifestyle, the family lived decently, without starvation or tattered clothes. Helen's parents worked hard, so she and Angela learned early on to take care of the household.
Helen reflected on modern children, who, in her opinion, were overprotected by their parents. She and her sister were already washing floors and cooking meals at the age of 6 or 7. They took care of the yard and livestock, completed their homework and laundry without reminders. Despite their responsibilities, the girls still had plenty of spare time. After finishing their tasks and homework, they would happily join their friends outside. All their peers lived similarly, balancing their time between home, school, and playing with friends. Helen and Angela were always supportive of each other, maintaining a strong bond.

What an interesting story I am glad that a quiet old age next to loving, although not related by blood, but close in spirit, is given to Helen as a gift for her self-sacrifice, diligence, sincerity, kindness to people! I want to believe that it was sent from God . Thank you very much for the great audio! Good luck to the channel and its subscribers!

Great story, I’m glad Helen finally stood up to her lazy good for nothing son. She was more than a mother to him and he didn’t appreciate her. He was toxic and she needed to let him go, good for her.

Wonderful story, but very frustrating for me...Helen, go with Peter, etc. Loving an addict is as bad as being the addict.

I have three younger brothers and I can’t imagine any one of them mistreating our mother, in fact they have been taking care of her for the past 10 years since our father died and think nothing of it

To the end I was hoping that Helen would come to her senses and realize that the worst you could do to a child is spoil him with too much concern. Teach a child to be hard working, honest. Help him. of course, but only to make him independent. Nothing more. Specially, never sell your house and buy something new on your child's name. Keep your own ownership. But as usual, our perfect narrator brings everything to order. I like the ending, as always. Thank you again.

It's easy for people to say, "Get rid of the addict, choose yourself" but it's not so easy to do. The son sounds like my brother's twin. Sixty-three years old, my brother still depends on my ninety-year-old Dad, even though he is lying in at home in hospice care as I write this. They both live with me. I could not turn my back on my brother out of my deep love and respect for my Dad, but I have paid the price. With addiction comes manipulation, and it is very hard for a parent to turn their back on their "child" and I would never turn my back on my Dad. Add to the fact that my brother has other issues, including mental health, he is the definition of a toxic person. Please pray for me that I have the strength to remove him from my home when the time comes. There is a limit to being my brother's keeper.

I'm glad Helen finally rejected her son Jeremy. I believe that Jeremy's father was a good for nothing person and he inherited his father's nasty ways. Helen realized that you don’t have to have the same DNA to be family ❤❤❤😊😊😊

A very nice story but it begs for a part two. There are so many interesting ways it could play out and your readers would like to find what happens. EDIT...and judging by all the comments I've read, a great many of your readers agree that there should definitely be a continuation of this story. So, c'mon True Story and other fables, if you've never done a continuation of one of your wonderful stories, this is the one to start with 🙏

It seems that Helen should have stayed with Peter and stop blaming herself for her sons weakness and believing that it was her fault that he had turned out that way. I do feel that you don't turn your back on your family but I don't think she did him any favors by catering to him. Another betrayal! Valerie didn't deserve that. What a happy ending for both women. Thank you.

I can’t with this one cause I would never do all that for a spoiled, inconsiderate boy in a man’s body. But then, first of all, I would not have, and did not, raise my sons like that. SMH.

feel incomplete! there should be punishment side story for man like "Aaron" who just throw some property easily leave innocent woman other hand "mike" is fair he just searching for "fling" he did not give any false hope , or promise. so funny thing is i have more sympathy and want retribution for "Valerie suffering " not for "Helen " Aaron promised created world for Valerie and suddenly he dumped Valerie and eva now question is Aaron provided appartement and some money for his dumped ex love & daughter is this act consider Aaron good will or kindness ! answer is "NO" even he deceived and prevented marriage registration Valerie have right to claim "alimony "Compensation."(due to long period of relation as mother of his daughter ) daughter has right of "child support" . what he its pretty sad that "" Aaron" escape easily (Valerie should taught a good lesson to Aaron) that is the sad part he remained unpunished.
