MOTHER2/EarthBound - Samples used in the soundtrack

Note:
This video is about SAMPLES used in the game, not about mere "musical similarities". Sampling is the art of taking a portion of a specific, already existing work and often manipulating its sound signal to use it in a new musical production. Just because one track happens to sound a bit like Tequila doesn't mean it "sampled" it.

It's incredible what they did with this game's soundtrack, it sounds really realistic, i dont know how can they fit all these samples inside that tiny 3mb cartridge. I've heard that inside earthbound's cartridge there was a special sound processor or something, almost like that one used for star fox, but for sound.

Pedro Boh Hirokazu Tanaka programmed the game's sound engine from scratch. It was not uncommon for video game composers back then to be expected to program the music in addition to actually composing it - Yuzo Koshiro similarly built Streets of Rage's sound engine himself. Tanaka still was kind of an exception though, seeing how he personally INSISTED on creating the engine to ensure he had full creative control over the game's sound. That guy sure knows what he's doing - he's been coding sound engines in assembly language since Nintendo's early arcade days after all.

yeah apparently it was not a Legal issue that made EarthBound late for the VC, the original prototype Carts for Mother 2 went missing and Shigesato Itoi spent 5 years rebuilding the game from scratch, as for Earthbound, it was a rom but they were not allowed to release it until japan does. atleast, that was what i heard

***** Wait, wait hold up so Earthbound is a NEW SUPER NINTENDO GAME?! Like, for real?! I bought that on Virtual Console but had no clue. It still sounds retro, though correct? Because if it sounds modern I will be pretty pissed. But that makes me even more happy I got it. I promised my friend I would not play it until he got back from his trip since he wanted to see it really bad (two months left) so that is why I ask you here and now if it is a modern-style. I did notice the trailer was unusually deluxe on the eShop compared to other SNES titles as well, but I had no clue it was rebuilt so it truly is a brand new SNES game then if it was rebuild in the twenty-first century.

Medachod not really and like i said i only heard, Shigesato Itoi posted somewhere that he had been working on an EarthBound related thing for 5 years which was confirmed to be making Mother 2 playable on the VC. the reason why the Trailer was so deluxe is because People bugged for it for years

I love this comment so much but I hope you and other people that feel this way understand that this largely what hip hop sampling is about. Because when I'm reading comments on hip hop songs there's mention of stealing (which is a blatant lie because they have to pay or face legal issues that forces them to pay if they're using it commercially) when it's an art form. Havoc turning a piano tune from Herbie Hancock's Jessica into the ominous guitar sounding riff in Shook Ones Pt 2. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJOBhpd0udrQpJs.html RZA taking the soulful crooning from Delores Hall's Where Do We Go From Here and turning it into the eerie male sounding "ahhh" throughout Raekwon's Ice Water. Like any art form, not exclusive to hip hop, some put more creativity and/or detail than others. (E.g. the simplistic Powerpuff Girls vs the more detailed Sailor Moon) Even with the simple ones like Puff Daddy and Poke sampling Juicy Fruit for BIG's Juicy though. You have to think of that record to sample (digging in the crates), then cut it in a way the song works. It's SO easy to say how easy it is to do AFTER it has been done. But try doing it from scratch where you have to pick a record, cut it yourself, and it's enjoyable NOT just with yourself but with others too (it's also why DJ'ing is an art form and not just playing a playlist). If you have that skill, you can be making a ton of money from it (like a certain someone who hails from Chicago). I see a lot of people trying to recreate beats on KZfaq and most of them SUCK, not because they don't have the tools, but they don't have the same commitment or vision. They'll only recreate the most well known part of the song and loop it. But ignore the changes within the song such as the bridge and what not; the nuances. They'll also get the pitch and tempo wrong. If they spent more time with it they can prolly get it right. But it's hard, isn't it? It's easy when it sounds familiar, until you try to do it yourself.

@@KusMoGX the blatant theft that bothers me is Daft Punk sampling Breakwater and presenting it essentially untouched as their own song. that shit is wack. the sampling in hip hop that you are talking about are all very interesting touches and choices that have created new art. i personally think that should be freely allowed without having to pay royalties...it's like making a collage.
@KusMoGX
@KusMoGX Жыл бұрын
@@SaltPyramids Business in general is so dirty. Everything is monetized and assigned ownership. It's how we have NFTs. As much as we hate it for the misrepresentation of the original creators, if it's being used commercially they would have had to go through the avenues for someone to get compensated for it. So they can present it as their own work even if it's untouched if that's what the terms were when the sample was acquired. Like Puff Daddy and his Hitmen producers with the 80s samples like Juicy Fruit in Juicy. And that's where it gets even more dirty. Because the original creators may not own their own work. They've signed a legally binding contract to give up the rights to it to another party in order to get something on their end. It's like people buying images on Getty Images. That's why they cost so much. Because they can use the images however they want like it's their own. Same with fonts.

This is actually a good example of sampling done well. Some hear about sampling and automatically assume it’s either stealing or lazy, but a good sample flip can take a piece of audio and turn it into something completely different. Sometimes, the sampling is so good that you can’t even tell it’s a sample without some digging!
@tsawy6
@tsawy6 Жыл бұрын
Iunno, I don't think that sampling is good or bad entirely on the basis of recognisability. Sometimes you can't tell anything is there, sometimes you can tell there's /something/ but you don't know what, and sometimes it's something you can identify, even quite clearly. All three cases can be cool, interesting, and artistic.

Obviously the SNES's soundchip is based around instrument audio samples, but Earthbound has to be one of the first games to utilize recognizable song samples like you'd hear in hip hop. Someone playing the game in the 90s could've very well recognized some of these samples from their original songs. If anyone knows of an earlier game that uses this style of sampling let me know, but I can't think of one.

God bless you, sir, for not listing instances of interpolation (the star spangled banner part of Boris' Cocktail) or musicial similarities as "samples". That is such a huge pet peeve of mine, you don't even know. This is also, in general, a really well put together/edited documentation of the confirmed samples, which is fantastic, because information on the samples can be a little spotty and lazily documented. And given this is one of the few game soundtracks to feature sampling of copyrighted material, rather then largely using sample CDs, I'd say it's pretty important having shit documented properly.

I knew the composers of _EarthBound_ were fans of The Beatles, but I didn't know they USED samples from their songs in the score! I knew there must have been a reason why _Cross Over Time and Space_ and _Sound Stone_ were so familiar! That is so cool!!

This is such a cool video. I recently finished Earthbound for the first time, and while a lot of the music struck me as weirdly familiar, it wasn't until Cross Over Space and Time that I was like "okay, that is DEFINITELY the intro to All You Need is Love." That's pretty simple: A sample is, well, sampled from an existing work, so it's basically a copypasta of its soundwave; which also means these sound snippets are stored on the game cartridge as MIDI instruments. Sampling is the art of using and manipulating sounds that already exist, if you will. Playing the American Anthem on a keyboard is not sampling, because it's not directly taking a sound to re-use. The only thing that's being re-used is a melody line, in a process called "arranging".
