My mother (who is 76 years old) apologized a few days ago about her mistakes. But I didn't know what mistakes she was talking about. I don't care, I had a great childhood. We're only humans. What's done is done. :)

I have a LONG list of things I don't want to be a mistake when raising my own kids. My relationship with my mom was very...dysfunctional and she passed away when I was 19. As I hope to start my family in a year or two, there are things I really want to do. Most of all, I want to spend FUN one-on-one time with my kids, like go and get ice cream, get dinner together, cooking together. I didn't get that with my mom to the point that it BLEW MY MIND when other people talk about doing fun dates with their moms and are so close compared to what I had. I want a good connection with my kids and I don't want anything to get in the way of that.

Girl I feel you!!! I’m starting to plan a family now and my mother is a narcissist. I barely talk to her and only do because me and my baby brother are very close. But I had an older woman friend who so loving and affectionate with me. I was lucky. I don’t see her anymore but I won’t forget going to a spa in the city with her and it was like mom daughter day and the ladies there assumed we were mom and daughter 😅 loved it! I can’t wait to be a mother and I’ll be so happy to have a daughter! My mother competed with me it seemed and said horrible things I hope to never say or do with my children!! I mean I don’t need to hope I won’t do it!

Hi! I love your idea, but I also suggest that if you have more than one child you should spend time with only one of them, not all of them together. Like give them different spaces to be with you ^^ Im not sure if you already thought abt that or if one-to-one means exactly that hahaha im not an english speaker

I was that weird veggie kid. When I was 5 my favorite foods were Lima beans, cantaloupe and carrots but I hated animal products. So weird how pickiness can exclude so many foods.

The misdirected anger, ugh. I'm not even a mom yet and i struggle with that so much (and even just directed shouldn't-be-angry-anger) and I'm terrified of ever misdirecting it at my kids in the future because that was something my dad always had an issue with and i really don't want my kids to be scared of me like that.

Re. the forgetting thing, I can definitely relate. One thing I say to my kids is, ‘We can do x, y, z later but you will need to remind me because sometimes I get so busy that I forget things and I don’t want to forget because I would love to do x, y, z with you - I think it would be really fun.’ And if I do forget or don’t have time, they are mentally prepared and they aren’t feeling rejected 😌

I struggle with forgetting things. I've been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and one of the symptoms of that is called "fibro fog" which is basically just a terrible short term memory. I'm learning to write everything down, especially with such busy days filled with 5 kids and appointments! Mine is an illness, BUT it's normal to forget things when your busy, so please don't beat yourselves up mommas if you're forgetful sometimes!! Planners are the greatest invention for me!

I would want my child to not be scared to come talk to me. Not be scared of telling me anything. Kids need to feel like they can tell you stuff or else they will hide and grow up to be strangers. That's what im going to try to do, but i realize no one is perfect.

My biggest mistake: Thinking my child was going to be just like my brother and me when we were kids. I even bought him all the same toys we liked to play that I grew up with. But he is nothing like me, and really like no other child I have ever been around. It took some time for me to really understand him (he is now 5) and letting go of my previous expectations has been so good for both of us! For some strange reason thought I knew what my child was going to be like. WRONG! haha

This video was amazing. I can relate to so much of this not even as a mother but as a person. I too rarely feel anger but when I do I often feel a lot of guilt about taking anger out on others. I also think it is so important to know what your kids love most about having you as a mother so that you can do your best to make them happy, like you knowing how much ivy loved quality time.

Thank you so much for posting this, and being so raw. It’s hard to admit mistakes anyway, but especially as a parent, it almost seems to invite judgment. I’ve looked at you as a solid role model for many years, as you’re the embodiment of what I’d always hoped to be and achieve as a mother. Now that I am a mom of a 2- almost 3 month old, I’ve really realized what a super mom you are. Maybe you don’t feel that way, but that’s certainly the way I look at you. It’s through your vulnerabilities and rawness, that I can take notes, and implement your words and advice into my own journey as a parent. I’ll still make mistakes, and I’ll still have questions and moments of doubt, or whatever, but I also have faith that I will be the perfect mom for my kid(s), even if I don’t feel like it sometimes. Anyway, I just want to thank you again! I’ll be looking forward to your next one!!

Hi, come from Angela Braniffs channel. I can definitely relate. I have 5 kids. With my first, I took on board what everyone said all the time and it was absolutely depressing thinking I must just have it all wrong. And realising that I lacked confidence, when I had no reason to. When my second came along, it was SO life changing and parenting both became a breeze, because I chose to just do what I wanted to do as a parent, I let myself be the judge of me, and I went about parenting my children with my own expectations of myself as a mother. And it just made it such a breeze. The confidence was life changing. It wasn't a matter of oh, I know what I'm doing or whatever else, but being confident in my choices and decisions. Sure, if something didn't work, I'd try something else, however it did make me a more persistent mumma, a more calmer and happier mumma.. I finally embraced motherhood and enjoyed being a mumma. And its sad that it took me to have number 2 to get to that. But I guess that's how I ended up having 3 more kids, and it's just gotten better and better. 💗

It's so great how you treat your kids as actual human beings, even though they are still small. They learn a lot from you and you learn a lot from them! Though I dont have any kids myself, I see so many mothers who treat their kids as if they can't do anything or can't grow because they are children. I mean, my sister went ballistic at my dad for setting her child in the grass before he was a year old (because a textbook said so). Its refreshing seeing mothers like you!

I am not a mumma yet, but I will soon be on that journey of TTC. In my motherhood journey, I hope I don't make the mistake of when my child is upset, I don't want to make the mistake of not allowing them to express how they feel in that moment, I don't want the repeat of what I got "Don't cry, or I'll give you something to cry for" type parenting that I got growing up. I want to teach them what that emotion is and allow them to tell me why they feel this way and help them process it and move forward, I am very impatient and can get irritable easily and I don't want that to rub off on my child, I want my child to know what their emotions are, be able to recognise and express them in a safe, healthy environment and learn how to cope with them better then I have in the past. Great video! I am so inspired by your parenting :)

The biggest mistake I’ve made so far as a mom is not pay attention to my kids over hearing complaints about myself. I’ve struggled with depression over half of my life so I’m not my biggest fan. But when I’m reaching out to my husband on tough days I don’t realize my kids can probably hear me talk about how much I dislike myself. I’ve been working on explaining mental health and being more open about why I struggle instead of them putting it together as if there’s any other purpose to beat yourself down so much. 😔

As the daughter of a severely depressed mom, my only suggestion is to really impress upon your children that the way you feel is not their fault. I adore my mom and we have a beautiful relationship, but much of my childhood was spent feeling guilty for 'making her sad'. There is so much hope for you and you are so valuable and loved. 🧡

@@annarocha3254 oh I do. Absolutely. My kids know I’m “sick” and my husband and I explain age appropriately to them what that all means. I had a rough relationship with my own mom and one thing I made sure was to own my faults and be the one to say sorry and seek my kids forgiveness when I mess up. I know my kids love me and they know I love them so much. Depression is truly a dark battle that I will probably struggle with for the rest of my life but I do have better control over it now. And more tools in my belt to prepare to reach out and use when there are worse days. I love my family. We’re such a solid team. But I have so much mom guilt because depression has robbed so much of my time getting to enjoy that love. 😔

Love the skiing thing 😆 I aways though my kids will learn very early, but for the last 5 years I was pregnant or having a small baby so being the most experienced skier in our family and wanting to be a part of teaching them, it hasn't work out so far 😁

My daughter can get into a frame of mind where she finds problems in everything, and can pretend she can't do things. Usually when she's being told to do stuff she doesn't want to. I went mad at her this week because I thought she was pretending she couldn't open some doors in the house, which I was certain she usually has no problem with. She was making a scene over it. So I shouted at her, "Why are you now pretending you can't open the doors?!", and refused to help. Then later, my husband told me she can't actually open the doors (how I've missed this I don't know?!). Felt so bad. Sometimes, if they've been in naughty frame of mind, you can then mistake genuine actions as acting up.... Staying calm when she's acting up over small things that need doing is something I have to try really hard with.

Wow Ivy’s comment! 😍 I had the most loving and present parents but when I was a child, I used to keep a list of things I would or wouldn’t want to replicate with my children later. I see myself thinking back then ‘you MUST remember this not to do it’. Obviously, I’m an adult so I forgot most of it.. but the one thing that will never leave my mind is exactly what Ivy told you. My parents would tell me we were going to do things later to please me, there was no bad intention. They had very busy days and did their best. I don’t know if they would just forget to do it in the end or if they never had the intention to but I am sure now they simply thought I would forget. But I would not, there was not much in my life apart from them so if they promised me something I would wait for it until it happened. A small promise for an adult is so huge for a child. Of course I would never blame my wonderful parents for this and it is absolutely ok to forget things but as you say, I think it is even more important not to promise something we aren’t sure we can do on the first place. Thanks Ivy for having reminded it to adult me 🙏🏻☺️
