Usually videos about tabletop RPGs, especially from smaller channels, are a guy sitting in front of a camera and just talking off the cuff for twenty or so minutes. Not this one. Succinctly written, beautifully edited and shot, easily one of the most compelling ttrpg videos I've seen

i remember MANY comments saying that we live in an age where some random dude could out-perform a whole company in terms of media quality. this was another example of that, just on a different layer crazy just how little passion is appreciated compared to fame or cash

I've only had the chance to play Mothership once during a convention, but it somehow managed to so thoroughly capture my imagination that I purchased and kickstarted multiple third-party supplements and adventures that I may never get the chance to play. It manages to squeeze maximum tone and style in as few pages as possible.

Unfortunately during my first and only session of Mothership, we didn't get to use that rule. All of us still died though, probably. Two in a hyperspace ram maneuver in a desperate attempt to seal something sinister, one to buy the other two time. The space hulk is still flying through the endless void, charted for the sun. With luck, it'll just be another three names on an incident report.

That was an exceptional video. My one qualm about the rule is you being comatose. If there aren't any other rules in the book about how being comatose works, does that just mean that you sit at the table and do nothing until the party gets around to either killing you or bringing you back? That doesn't sound very fun, so I hope that there's another way to do it.
@alfredvalley
@alfredvalley 2 ай бұрын
This is a valid qualm! Mothership sets itself up as a game that values rulings over rules, encourages the rule of cool. If this situation came up mid-game I don’t think I’d expect there to be a rule dealing with comatose. Instead the context would determine what happens next. There will be bad consequences of having to lug around the unresponsive PC. Either the party intervene or they dump the body; they’ll be forced to make a decision. Does the scientist cook up a harebrained plan to jerryrig a makeshift defibrillator? You bet I’m letting that happen. Do the party stash the body in a hold and go on their way? I’d get the player to roll up a new character but make a mental note that there’s a tasty loose end to resolve further down the line.

Oh man, this is so appealing to me but its the kind of thing that's hard to get a group for and get them all on board (and damn if this isn't something that would hit hardest in person!) While not quite the same I had a great experience in horror RPG tension playing the Alien RPG, having the alien instantly kill me as the android, the person who was the most physically capable of the group provided an amazing sense of danger as I watched the rest of the game play out and the other players try to work towards their own ends. There's something to be said about having a good death!

I'm not sure I"m a fan, but I see why it's appealing to some. Plus this is a TTRPG, you don't have to use every rule. The issue is that it treats characters as much more disposable, like we're playing a Roguelike and not a TTRPG. Or I suppose, it's like we're playing the original D&D. I don't play games that last 10 sessions, I play games that last for years. Losing years of my time, relationships, all I've built up because of one dice roll is straight up not fun. Of course you can try to avoid risking that death save in the first place, but I then wonder how difficult that is considering that other detail. Survive, solve, or save, mutually exclusively? I don't take that as a rule, I look at that and take it as either a challenge or a lie Everyone has their different playstyle, I guess. I want to look into Mothership because a friend wants to tweak it to run a Signalis game some day, but this aspect of it makes me wary. This seems like the kind of thing that appeals to people who play 10 Candles, that kind of thing.

I have a comment and a criticism. The aesthetic of this video is *awesome*. Well lit, well framed. I love all the lo-fi/analog props and material. (Liked one shot in particular so much I took a screen shot and put it in my cool art and pictures folder.) The take on Mothership is insightful and interesting. My criticism: the narration. The voice is timid. Listening to it made me feel like a teacher who needs to tell the kid to speak up. Miked so close we get all the saliva-mouth-sounds. And some of the writing - "just move on," "hits different" - is especially cringy delivered by the timid voice, like someone trying to sound current, or tough, but is neither. Really does a disservice to everything else about the video, which is very well made. I'd recommend hiring someone, asking a more-confidently-spoken friend, or getting some voice coaching. But either way, I hope this creator keeps making videos.
