I can see how these types of cryptid stories can form… I was driving one day, not even in the middle of nowhere (pretty close to a busy freeway). And in my peripheral vision I saw what looked like a large rabbit with big bird wings stand up on its hind legs and fly straight up into the air. It took me a second to register what I had just seen, and I was alone in the car audibly saying “wtf was that wtf did I just see” I rationalized it by deciding I must have seen the exact moment a large bird started airlifting a rabbit it caught. And then when it started flying, it was facing me for that split second, so even though it wasn’t flying straight up, it created the illusion that it was. And maybe since it was in my peripheral, my brain filled in some blanks and made it look like one cohesive creature. But the weird thing is that when I was in high school I had a friend who said that once when he was driving he caught a glimpse of a weird small animal that couldn’t exist. It like genuinely scared him. And I think it had something to do with a rabbit too. A connection I didn’t make until way later. But if a few people had this similar experience within a shorter time frame and all within the same area. There you go. It would just snowball into Birdrabbit Man.

Mothman is the only cryptid that I don't disbelieve completely. I was packing in groceries one night in southern West Virginia with my cousin and my sister. We were all young, maybe 11-12 yo and had never heard of mothman before. As we got to the door, we all looked across the creek and saw the huge creature with glowing red eyes, wings and all, and freaked out and ran inside. In hysterics, we describe to my dad what we had seen and he just waved us off and told us we had seen a big owl. In all fairness, we do see a lot of great horned owls and they do have massive orange eyes that glow red if you shine a light at them, but these eyes were several inches apart and the body was much bigger than a person, so we all knew that wasn't right. It wasn't until about a year later that I walked through the living room as my dad was watching a mothman documentary, and happened to see a drawing of him. I immediately recognized the creature as the one we saw, and even confirmed with my sister and cousin. It was a wild moment, and my bedroom window faced the area we had seen it at, so it was great nightmare fuel for me. I'm a very skeptical person, but the fact that 3 of us clearly saw it, all with the same details, and we'd never heard of Mothman before, I just don't know.

I like how the mothman’s appearance has drastically changed from a giant roundish bird creature to an actual man with moth like features and bird wings. I still think what happened during the first witness account is that they were probably just driving fast and saw the glint in an owl’s eyes in a tall tree as they drove by, and it gave the illusion of a creature. I love cryptid stories especially the more obscure ones. When I was a kid people always told of a creature/man, similar to Tahm Kench, a catfish man who would appear as an unrecognizable old man and offer you some sort of assistance but after helping you, something unfortunate would happen after. I guess to celerity, this isn’t a cryptid because it’s not an animal, just pointing out most places have some kind of urban legend. In most cases those stories are being lost.

I remember the old Mothman movie about the phone call and the bridge accident. I remember watching it as a kid via vhs or dvd and watching one of the scenes (a car accident) frame by frame and it scared the shit out of me. It happens in a flash in regular speed but if you watch it frame by frame you can see the Mothman charging and flying in to the car causing the accident. That was the realest shit to me as a kid because watching it frame by frame it felt like I was watching/discovering something I was not supposed to see XD

Mothman wasn't described by the original eyewitness reports as looking like a man. They stated he had no head, but 2 large, red eyes on his chest, gray feathers, wings, 2 legs, and stood just under the height of a man... thus, a sandhill crane with its head pointed forward.
